如果你刚到美国

没有有效期的国外证件

如果办事处无法读取并核实你驾照上的信息——姓名、出生日期、准驾类别、有效期、限制条款——你的申请不会被拒,而是改为参加笔试和路考,除非有经认证的翻译件提供这些信息。持外国驾照的话,笔试无论如何都要考。

如果你另一个州的驾照已过期

界线是一年:过期满一年或更久,你就按首次申请人对待,笔试和路考都要参加。

  • 过期满一年或更久,就要重新参加笔试。

  • 过期满一年起就要参加笔试;仍在有效期内的外州驾照可以免笔试。持仍然有效的外国驾照,笔试还是要考。

  • 新墨西哥州法律把这条界线定为一年没有有效驾照;已公布的州法规中没有设定其他界线。

  • 新墨西哥州不为其他州的驾照办更新——你要上交它,然后申请新墨西哥州的驾照。仍在有效期内的外州驾照可以免笔试和路考;过期满一年或更久的什么都免不了,而视力检查无论如何都要做。

如果你没有可转换的驾照

什么时候要提供号码,谁能看到它

申请 REAL ID 驾照时,如果你有社会安全号码(SSN),就需要提供,州政府会用联邦批准的方式核实它;申请普通驾照则完全不收集这个号码。如果你不符合申领号码的条件,可以用未过期的外国护照,加上有效的美国签证和获批的 I-94 入境记录代替。

要参加的考试

视力检查

至少一只眼睛的视力要达到 20/40 或更好。

  • 每位申请人都要做视力检查——标准是至少一只眼睛达到 20/40 或更好——除非是通过邮寄、电话或电子方式更新驾照。没通过并不代表申请就此结束:车辆管理局可以评估你的视力问题,发一张只限白天开车的驾照。

路考

驾驶演示和交通标志、交通法规考试一起,属于新墨西哥州法律要求首次申请人参加的同一次考试。它和笔试一样,驾照过期满一年就要重新考。

笔试有几次机会

达到 80% 或更高的分数才算通过。没通过的话,至少要等一周才能重考。

  • 笔试或路考共三次没通过,就要等六个月,从你申请的日期算起,而不是从第三次没通过算起。重新申请、重新交费,就能重新开始一轮考试机会。

  • 笔试没通过后想什么时候重考都可以,当天也行,但一周之内最多考两次。

  • 一次申请和它的费用,覆盖申请日期起六个月内最多三次考试机会。这三次机会是笔试和路考共用的一个额度。

考试用车和保险

考试用车由你自己提供。它必须和你申请驾驶的车辆类型相同,车内要有有效的行驶登记证明和保险证明,而且车况良好。

  • 车不一定要是你自己的:没有规定要求你是登记车主或保单上的被保险人,所以借来的车也可以。有效的行驶登记证明必须放在车里,你还要持有有效的保险证明。

  • 考官会先检查车辆,你要演示怎么调后视镜,怎么使用手刹、喇叭、雨刮、前灯、尾灯、双闪和转向灯。这些操作不会做,考试还没开始就结束了。

  • 路考也可以在与车辆管理局(MVD)签约的驾驶教育学校完成;之后你带上填好的 MVD 结业记录和你的合格成绩去办理。

  • 路考期间车里不允许有儿童和宠物,也强烈不建议带任何其他乘客。没有为翻译或看护人员写明任何例外。

  • 《机动车法》本身对考试用车没有任何规定:车是谁的、登记、保险、检查、谁同车,法律条文都没有写。
