如果你刚到美国
没有到期日的外国证件
马萨诸塞州不看你外国驾照卡面上的日期：它只为来自加拿大、墨西哥、美属领地、韩国、德国、法国和台湾地区的驾照办理换发，而是要求你提交发证机关出具的近期官方驾驶记录——加拿大、墨西哥或美属领地的记录出具不超过 30 天，韩国的不超过 60 天，德国的不超过 30 天，另外还要一份由德国领事馆盖章、同样出具不超过 30 天的翻译件。如果你的国家不在这份名单上，你完全无法换发：你要按新手司机申请，参加学习驾驶许可（learner's permit）考试和路考。
如果你在别州的驾照已经过期
如果过期不到 12 个月，你不用重考笔试和路考；过期超过 12 个月，就要完整地考笔试、路考，再加视力检查。如果你无法上交驾照原件，请带上可接受的带照片的身份证件，以及一份出具不超过 30 天、经认证的驾驶记录复印件；如果不是英文的，还要附翻译件。

要参加的考试
视力检查
申请驾照或学习驾驶许可（learner's permit）的每一位申请人都要接受视力检查，检查方式由登记官（Registrar）决定。
你任何一只眼睛（戴或不戴矫正镜片）的远视力至少要达到 20/40，双眼水平视野合计至少 120 度，能分辨红色、绿色和琥珀色，并且没有无法矫正的复视。由验光师或眼科医师出具的完整视力检查证明，可以代替电脑视力检查——适用于单眼视（mono-vision）的情况，或者车管局（RMV）的检查未通过、被拒绝进行、无法进行的情况。
检查你的视力，是为了确认你能安全驾驶。
路考
要拿到驾照，你必须参加并通过 D 类（Class D）路考；同时还必须持有 D 类学习驾驶许可。
在 D 类路考中，你要向考官展示自己的驾驶能力。
你要通过学习驾驶许可考试和路考，才能获得驾驶资格。

如果没通过，你可以再预约一次，到 RMV 服务中心（RMV Service Center）重考学习驾驶许可考试。

笔试练习题
考试会考到酒精或药物影响下驾驶，以及开车时收发电子信息的内容。
备考请学习 D 类驾驶员手册（Class D driver's manual），手册在 mass.gov/lists/drivers-manuals。
考试内容包括交通规则、药物或酒精影响下驾驶的后果、《未成年驾驶人法》（Junior Operator Law）、与视力障碍人士共用道路，以及与骑车人和行人共用道路。

谁可以陪你练车
坐在你旁边座位上的人，必须在其居住州持有驾照、年满 21 岁，并且有至少一年驾龄。

路考当天带什么
谁陪你去
陪考人（sponsor）必须年满 21 岁，有至少一年驾龄，并持有美国某个州或领地签发的有效驾照。外国驾照不被接受。
D 类路考必须有陪考人，M 类路考则不需要。
路考时必须有一位符合条件的陪考人陪同。摩托车路考不需要陪考人。
考试用车和保险
考官必须能顺畅够到可用的手刹——中控台上没有手刹的车不能用，装着应急备胎或使用维修牌照的车也不能用。如果是租来的车，要带上租车合同，以及租车公司用正式信头纸出具、写明你和陪考人姓名的授权书。
考试前会检查你的车辆；装有点火联锁装置的车，以及为能力测试装有适应性改装设备的车，同样要检查。
车必须状况良好，通过安全检查，注册登记有效，并贴有在有效期内的年检贴。车上要有驾驶座旁边的座位给考官，还要有驾驶座后方的后排座位给陪考人。
考官必须能用手刹紧急制动，够到手刹的路径不能有任何阻挡。不符合这一条的车——包括中控台上没有手刹的车——不能使用，这种情况下路考不收费。
D 类路考你要带一辆符合 RMV 要求的车，M 类路考则要带一辆摩托车。
如果车辆在外州注册登记，你必须向考官出示保单或保险证明，人身伤害保额至少为 $25,000/$50,000，财产损失保额至少为 $30,000。
考试必须使用一辆能代表你平时开、或者打算开的车型的车辆。
车必须让考官能用手刹紧急制动；做不到的车不能使用。

医疗事务（Medical Affairs）能力路考由 RMV 的路考考官主持，用来确认司机在医学上符合驾驶条件，或者能安全使用适应性改装设备。
笔试和路考可以由车辆登记局（Registry）的工作人员、登记官指定的代理人，或者登记官授权的第三方来主持。
