Tu estatus migratorio
Las personas que no son ciudadanas y cumplen los requisitos, verificadas a través de SAVE, reciben una licencia de conducir estándar de Pensilvania o una tarjeta de identidad con foto.7
Documentos extranjeros sin fecha de vencimiento
Pensilvania exime del examen teórico solo con una licencia de conducir vigente de este estado o de otro estado. Una licencia emitida por otro país no cumple los requisitos para la exención, sea cual sea la fecha de vencimiento que muestre.8
Con una licencia extranjera también tomas el examen de señales de tránsito, que cubre todas las señales estándar. Identificar mal dos o más señales reprueba el examen.9
Si tu licencia de otro estado venció
Se puede transferir si todavía está vigente o si lleva vencida seis meses o menos.2
Vencida seis meses o menos, se puede transferir sin examen teórico. Vencida más de seis meses, no se puede transferir; solicitas un permiso de instrucción de Pensilvania con el Formulario DL-180 y apruebas el examen teórico y el de destrezas.10

La ley obliga a PennDOT a recopilar tu número de Seguro Social (SSN, por sus siglas en inglés), tu estatura y el color de tus ojos, según el Pennsylvania Vehicle Code, para reducir el fraude con licencias de conducir. El número de Seguro Social no forma parte de tu historial público de conductor y no se imprime en tu permiso ni en tu licencia.13
Exámenes que tomas
Examen de la vista
Toda persona que solicita una licencia de conducir tiene que tomar un examen de la vista. El mismo examen corresponde a quien cambia de clase de licencia, agrega un endoso o quita una restricción, y a cualquier conductor cuya vista el Departamento cree que no cumple las normas visuales.14
Si tu vista no cumple las normas en el mostrador, el examinador te da un formulario Report of Eye Examination (DL-102), y un optometrista, un oftalmólogo o un médico de familia examina tu vista y lo completa.15
Para calificar sin restricción, tu visión combinada tiene que ser de 20/40 o mejor.16
Puedes hacerte el examen de la vista por adelantado con tu proveedor de atención médica o tu optometrista, o en el Driver License Center durante tu visita. Si usas lentes o lentes de contacto, llévalos.17
Examen de manejo
Toda persona que solicita una licencia de conducir no comercial tiene que tomar un examen de manejo, salvo que esté exenta de licencia según 75 Pa.C.S. § 1502. El examen se hace en un vehículo representativo de la clase de vehículo que quieres estar autorizado a manejar.18
Tienes que tomar y aprobar el examen de la vista, el examen teórico y el examen de manejo para obtener tu licencia de conducir.1

El conductor con licencia que te supervisa tiene que tener al menos 21 años, o al menos 18 si es tu cónyuge, tu padre o tu madre, tu tutor, o una persona que hace las veces de padre o madre. Tiene que tener licencia para la clase de vehículo que manejas, ocupar el asiento a tu lado y no estar bajo los efectos del alcohol o las drogas.27
