Si acabas de llegar a Estados Unidos

Tu estatus migratorio

Con un comprobante verificable de estatus legal temporal en Estados Unidos, te emiten una licencia o una tarjeta de identidad de plazo limitado.9

Documentos extranjeros sin fecha de vencimiento

Maryland acepta tu licencia de otro país tanto si está vigente como si está vencida, así que una fecha de vencimiento que falta o que pasó hace mucho no impide el cambio. Lo único que pierdes es la exención de los exámenes, que necesita una licencia que no lleve vencida más de un año.10

Si tu licencia de otro estado está vencida

Una licencia que lleva vencida un año o más no se puede cambiar directamente. Tienes que hacer y aprobar el examen teórico, el examen de la vista y el examen de manejo.11

La administración no puede usar, incluir ni codificar tu número de Seguro Social en tu licencia de conducir de ninguna forma.19

  • Si tu número de Seguro Social no se puede verificar con la Administración del Seguro Social pero cumples todos los demás requisitos, la administración emite una licencia no conforme de 45 días o una tarjeta de identidad de 45 días.20

  • Tienes que mostrar un comprobante de un número de Seguro Social válido, o un comprobante de que no cumples los requisitos para tener uno.21

Exámenes que haces

Examen de la vista

Puedes aprobar el examen de la vista, entregar un formulario de examen de la vista completado (DL-043 o DL-043A), o pedirle a un proveedor autorizado de certificación de la vista en línea que envíe los resultados al MVA de forma electrónica.22

  • El examen de la vista se puede hacer en el MVA o con tu propio médico de la vista.23

  • Haces un examen de la vista el día de tu cita.24

  • Tienes que tener visión binocular, una agudeza visual de al menos 20/40 en cada ojo y un campo visual continuo de al menos 140 grados.25

Examen de manejo

Te pueden eximir del examen si tienes una licencia de conducir vigente de otro estado de Estados Unidos, de un territorio de Estados Unidos, del Distrito de Columbia, de Puerto Rico o de Canadá.1

  • Si tu licencia lleva vencida un año o más, tienes que aprobar un examen teórico y un examen de manejo.2

  • Tienes que demostrar que puedes mantener un control razonable mientras manejas un vehículo de motor.27

Los intentos que tienes en el examen teórico

Después de no aprobar la primera vez, puedes presentar el examen de nuevo el siguiente día hábil, si hay una cita disponible.3

  • Después de no aprobar dos o más veces, tienes que esperar al menos siete días corridos para volver a presentarte. Esto vale para todos los exámenes teóricos, comerciales y no comerciales.4

Tu conductor supervisor tiene que tener al menos 21 años, tener licencia desde hace al menos tres años en Maryland o en otro estado para la clase de vehículo que manejas, e ir sentado junto a ti.6

Qué llevar al examen de manejo

Quién te acompaña

Un conductor supervisor tiene que acompañarte al sitio de examen. Durante el examen, en el vehículo solo pueden ir tú y el examinador, más un intérprete aprobado por el MVA si lo necesitas.7

  • Cuando te presentas al examen de manejo con un permiso de instrucción, te tiene que acompañar una persona calificada según la § 16-105 para acompañar a quien tiene un permiso, y esa persona tiene que llevar consigo su licencia de conducir. Cualquier persona autorizada para manejar esa clase de vehículo puede llevarte a la estación de examen y al punto de inicio del examen, siempre que lleve consigo una licencia de conducir vigente.30

El vehículo y su seguro

Haces el examen de manejo en un vehículo que llevas tú. Tiene que tener placas y registro al día, y tienes que llevar un comprobante de que está asegurado.8

  • Tienes que poner un vehículo de motor de un tipo adecuado para evaluar si sabes manejar todos los vehículos que se pueden manejar con la clase de licencia que solicitas.33

  • Tú pones el vehículo para el examen. Si es de alquiler, tu nombre tiene que aparecer como conductor autorizado en el contrato de alquiler.34

  • El examinador revisa el vehículo primero: llantas seguras, bien infladas y con suficiente dibujo; faros, luces de freno y direccionales que funcionen; frenos, bocina, espejos, manijas y seguros de las puertas que funcionen; un freno de mano al alcance del examinador; nada suelto dentro; y ninguna luz de advertencia grave en el tablero. Si el vehículo no pasa esta revisión, el examen no se hace.35
