A una persona residente de Massachusetts que está legalmente presente en Estados Unidos por al menos 12 meses le pueden emitir una licencia que cumple con REAL ID por un plazo menor a 60 meses, que termina el mismo día que su estadía autorizada.6

Exámenes que haces

Examen de la vista

En lugar del examen de la vista del propio Registry, y salvo que una norma diga otra cosa, puedes entregar un certificado de examen de la vista firmado por un optometrista u oftalmólogo que muestre que cumples los estándares mínimos de visión. Se acepta una firma electrónica en el certificado.12

  • Usa tus lentes de contacto o tus anteojos para el examen de la vista cuando normalmente los usas para ver de lejos.13

  • Quien no aprueba el examen de la vista, no quiere hacerlo o no lo puede hacer, puede entregar un RMV Vision Screening Certificate (VSC) original completado por su oftalmólogo u optometrista; el RMV lo puede aceptar en lugar del examen. Examen de manejo

Si tu licencia de otro estado lleva vencida más de 1 año, tienes que aprobar el examen completo (teórico y de manejo) y un examen de la vista. Si está vigente o lleva vencida menos de 1 año, no se exige examen teórico ni de manejo.8

El conductor que te acompaña tiene que tener licencia del estado donde vive, tener 21 años o más, tener al menos un año de experiencia manejando e ir sentado en el asiento junto a ti.24

Qué llevar al examen de manejo

Quién te acompaña

El acompañante (sponsor) de la escuela de manejo que va contigo tiene que tener un certificado válido de instructor profesional de manejo y una licencia de conducir. No se aceptan copias.26

  • Tu acompañante en el examen de manejo tiene que tener 21 años o más, al menos un año de experiencia manejando y una licencia vigente emitida por un estado o un territorio de Estados Unidos. Una licencia extranjera no se acepta.4

  • El acompañante tiene que llevar consigo su licencia de conducir vigente para que el Road Test Examiner la revise; una imagen electrónica de la licencia no se acepta.27

  • Tienes que llevar un acompañante calificado al examen de manejo.28

El vehículo y su seguro

El vehículo se revisa antes del examen. Tiene que estar en buen estado de funcionamiento y pasar una revisión de seguridad, tener un registro vigente y una calcomanía de inspección al día, tener un asiento junto al conductor para el examinador y un asiento trasero para el acompañante, y dejar que el examinador haga una parada de emergencia con el freno de mano (nada de consola central sin freno de mano, ni nada que le impida alcanzarlo).29

  • Si el vehículo está registrado en otro estado, muéstrale al examinador un comprobante de seguro igual a los mínimos de Massachusetts: $25,000/$50,000 por lesiones corporales y $30,000 por daños a la propiedad. Una póliza o un certificado que liste los límites de cobertura cuenta como comprobante.30

Algunos vehículos más grandes, como las minivans, pueden ser rechazados, y si el examen se detiene solo porque el examinador no pudo alcanzar el freno, no se cobra ninguna tarifa.35
