Wyoming driver's license
Get your first license in Wyoming after moving to the US.
The short answer
Getting a first Wyoming driver's license means passing a written test, which is required when you have never been licensed in this or any other state.1 A Class C license or permit costs $45.2 You may take the same written test twice in one day.3 The questions come from the state driver license manual, and for a Class C license that manual is Rules of the Road.4, 5 You must furnish your own vehicle for the driving skills test.6

If you just arrived in the US
Your immigration status
If you do not have permanent 10-year resident status, Wyoming issues a temporary license or ID. It is valid only for the period authorized on the documents you present and the department verifies. The card is marked "LIMITED TERM" across the top, and a driver's license also carries an NR suffix in its class field.7
If your license from another state has expired
You must take and pass the written knowledge test and vision screening if it has been expired for two years or more, or if you have never been licensed in this or any other state.1
If you have no license to transfer
If you have not held a valid driver license in the class you are applying for during the past two years, you must take all knowledge and driving skills tests the Department requires.8
Documents you need

Your Social Security Number
Giving your number, and who may see it
All applicants for a driver license, instruction permit, or identification card must give their Social Security number, and the Department may provide personally identifiable information to the Commissioner of Social Security to match records under federal law.10
Tests you take
Eye test
For a non-commercial license, you must show visual acuity of at least 20/40 with both eyes, with or without corrective lenses. The screening must be dated within 12 months of your application.11
If you fail the screening, a written vision statement from an optometrist or ophthalmologist, dated within the last three months and showing the acuity standard for your license class, can still get you approved. Wyoming states no waiting period before trying again and no limit on the number of attempts.12
Drive test
The examination may also include an actual demonstration of your ability to exercise ordinary and reasonable control of the type of vehicle you will drive.13
Tries you get on the written test
If you fail, you can take the same written test only twice in one day. Wyoming publishes no lifetime limit on attempts, no waiting period between days, and no retake fee.3
Practice questions for the written test
The manual's edition is from August 2021, produced by the WYDOT Driver Services Program, so it predates the 2024 WYDOT rules.14
You can take practice tests at gowyld.driving-tests.org/wyoming, a third-party site reached through the Wyoming state library. It is the only preparation material the manual names besides the manual itself.15
The manual covers only the basic requirements, and WYDOT itself states it cannot be used as an expression of the law.16
The written test questions are taken from the Wyoming Driver License Manual, the 2021 "Rules of the Road" edition, so that manual is the book to study.4
Study the manual for your license class: Rules of the Road for Class C, the Heavy Vehicle Manual for commercial Classes A, B and C, and the Motorcycle manual for Class M. The written test covers the class you apply for plus seat-belt law and Wyoming-specific road law.5

Who can sit with you while you practise
You must be accompanied by a person at least 18 years old who holds a valid driver license for the type of vehicle you are driving, is fit and capable of taking control of it, and occupies a seat beside you.17

Who comes with you
A licensed driver who is at least 18 must sit in the front passenger seat while you drive, and that person's license must cover the type of vehicle you are driving — a car-only license holder cannot supervise motorcycle practice. The manual states no separate rule for the skills test itself.18
