What it costs
A first license
You pay $58 for a Class C or restricted Class C license, or $23 for the limited-term version.
You pay this when you apply.
Your Social Security Number
Giving your number, and who may see it
You must give the Social Security number assigned to you, or a written statement that you have not been assigned one, and DMV verifies the number with the Social Security Administration. This does not apply to covered non-REAL ID credentials when your number was already verified.
Tests you take
Eye test
The vision test is free; if you take it wearing glasses or contact lenses, your driving privilege will say corrective lenses are required, and if you do not pass, DMV gives you a form to take to a licensed vision specialist.
Drive test
You show in an actual driving demonstration that you can operate a vehicle without putting people or property in danger, unless a waiver has been granted.
Tries you get on the written test
If you fail at a DMV office you may test again the same day, depending on the office's testing resources; online, you get at most two attempts in any 24-hour period and four attempts per test type in total, with any further attempts made at a DMV office. If you are found cheating, you fail and cannot test again for 90 days.

The fee is $7.00 each time you take the knowledge test.
Using an interpreter
The knowledge test is offered in English and Spanish, and the online version can read the questions and answer choices aloud. On the drive test, only you and the examiner are allowed in the vehicle — translators, family, friends, and pets are not allowed.
For the knowledge test, an authorized translator may be in the testing area with you, and with permission you may use a paper foreign-language dictionary — but not an electronic one; the test runs on a touch-screen in several languages, with or without audio, and you may bring your own earbuds or headphones. No translator is allowed in the vehicle during the drive test, and the DMV office list is also published in Cantonese, Mandarin, Russian, Spanish, and Vietnamese.
Practising with your permit
Who can sit with you while you practise
Your supervised practice hours count only when the person with you is at least 21 and has held a valid driver license for at least three years.
The person supervising you must sit in the seat beside you; for a motorcycle permit, they instead watch you while riding a separate motorcycle.
You must carry your instruction permit while driving and be accompanied by a person who is at least 21 and holds a license or endorsement with the same driving privileges.
What to bring to the drive test
Who comes with you
Only you and the examiner are allowed in the vehicle during the drive test; translators, family, friends, and pets are not allowed.
The car and its insurance
You bring a passenger vehicle with current registration and valid proof of insurance; the examiner checks that it starts under its own power and has working turn signals, brake lights, horn, seatbelts, mirrors, tires that are not bald or damaged, a muffler without excessive leaks, and a passenger door that opens from inside and outside — a vehicle that fails the check means the test is rescheduled. A rental car works if you are named on the rental agreement, or if the rental agency gives you a letter extending insurance coverage to you.
You must use a vehicle that can be driven under the license class you are applying for, but not under a lower class.
