What it costs

A first license

$18 for a class C license if you are 21 to 64, plus a $3 examination fee and a photograph fee of up to $8.

Your Social Security Number

Giving your number, and who may see it

Every driver's license and ID card applicant must give their Social Security number. The number stays confidential and is disclosed only where state law allows.

Tests you take

Eye test

Instead of taking the eyesight test with the examiner, you can submit an eyesight report from a licensed physician or licensed optometrist.

  • At renewal, a driver's license examiner gives the eyesight examination free of charge.

Drive test

An instruction permit does not require passing the driving test; every other part of the examination must be passed.

Tries you get on the written test

If you fail the written test, you can take it again by paying a further $1.50 examination fee, with no waiting period between tries.

  • Four failures of the written or driving test within six months mean a six-month wait, counted from your last failed test. Taking the tests again then requires a reexamination application and a $3 fee.

Kansas publishes a driver's license handbook for vehicles, one for motorcycles, one for commercial licenses, and a Spanish edition of the vehicles handbook.

Who can sit with you while you practise

An adult who is at least 21, holds a valid commercial, class A, B or C driver's license, and has at least one year of driving experience. They must sit in the seat beside you.
