What it costs

A first license

  • The state fee schedule lists a $4 fee for a Class D license, and other issuance charges are added on top of it.

  • It costs $42.50 to print and issue. A learner permit costs the same $42.50, so taking the permit and the license means paying it twice.

  • A four-year Class D license costs $42.50 in total — a $4 application fee plus a $38.50 license fee; a retest costs $4 and a replacement card costs $25.

  • The application fee is $4 for a Class D license, while commercial application fees run from $15 to $25; a noncompliant license carries an extra issuance fee on top.

If you just arrived in the US

Foreign documents with no expiry date

If your license shows no expiration date, the clerk enters an expiration of 30 days from the date of processing, and an English translation of your driving record dated within the last 60 days proves your license is current.

If your license from another state has expired

A non-commercial license expired 6 months or less past the date printed on the card transfers without retesting; expired longer than 6 months, you take the full exam — eyesight, road signs, traffic law knowledge, and a driving demonstration. An expired commercial license or permit cannot be transferred at all.

Documents you need

  • Documents that are still validA U.S. passport must be valid and unexpired. An Oklahoma driver license or identification card counts as a primary document only if it is valid and was originally issued after November 1, 2007.
    • An Oklahoma license or ID card works if it expired no more than three years ago and was originally issued after November 1, 2007; an out-of-state credential, passport, permanent resident card, or EAD must be unexpired. A foreign passport also needs a valid U.S. visa and a valid I-94.

Your Social Security Number

Giving your number, and who may see it

On your driving record, your Social Security number is treated as confidential personal information, along with your photograph, fingerprint, signature, addresses, and medical or disability information.

  • You cannot ask Service Oklahoma to use your Social Security number as your driver license number.

  • Every driver-license applicant must provide a Social Security number.

  • You must provide your Social Security number, but it will not appear on your license.

Tests you take

Eye test

You take the vision test at the counter during your visit to a Service Oklahoma or Licensed Operator location, in the same visit where you meet with an examiner. An adult applying for a Class D license passes the written, vision, and drive tests, so bring your glasses or contact lenses if you normally wear them.

  • Your vision will be checked, and you may be required to wear glasses or contact lenses to drive safely; no specific acuity figure is published.

Drive test

You show, by actually driving, that you can keep ordinary and reasonable control of a motor vehicle.

  • A driving test is one of the three Class D tests, alongside the vision screening and the written test.

  • An intermediate Class D license is issued on passing all parts of the driver license examinations given by Service Oklahoma, along with the required practice and an affidavit.

  • An intermediate Class D license requires practice, a course, and passing all parts of the driver license examinations given by Service Oklahoma.

  • The examiner can cancel the test when they judge the roads slick or hazardous, and there is no published appeal or rebooking priority — a long winter drive to the test site can end in a wasted trip.

  • The examiner tells you where to drive and watches that you can control the vehicle, do basic maneuvers like turning, backing, parking on a hill, and parallel parking, signal and keep your lane, obey signs and signals, apply right-of-way rules, and respond to other vehicles and pedestrians.

Tries you get on the written test

You can take the written exam as many times as needed, but only two attempts can be online — further attempts are in person — and by law you must wait at least one day between attempts. Every failed attempt adds a $4 fee, due when your license is issued.

Practice questions for the written test

The questions come from the Oklahoma Driver Manual and cover Oklahoma traffic laws, safe driving practices, and drug and alcohol laws and effects; local traffic laws for your city or town are not in the manual — those come from the local police department.

Practising with your permit

Who can sit with you while you practise

A licensed driver who is at least 21 years old must actually sit in the seat beside you.

  • You can drive between 5:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m., with a licensed driver at least 21 years old in the seat beside you.

  • With a learner permit, you need a licensed driver at least 21 years old in the seat beside you.

  • On a highway with a learner permit, a licensed driver who is at least 21 must be in the seat beside you.

  • For a motorcycle permit, your instructor must be a parent, legal guardian, or someone 21 or older who holds a valid Oklahoma license with a motorcycle endorsement and keeps you in sight.

  • With a restricted motorcycle license, you must be accompanied and instructed by someone 21 or older who is properly licensed to ride a motorcycle in Oklahoma and keeps you in sight.

  • Restriction code 9 on a license means a licensed driver 21 or older must be in the front seat while you learn to drive.

What to bring to the drive test

Who comes with you

No pets or extra people can be in the car with you and the examiner.

The car and its insurance

The examiner inspects your headlights, taillights, brake lights, turn signals, parking lights, plate lights, reflectors, rearview mirror, and a valid Oklahoma license plate, and all of them must be in good working order.

  • It must pass a vehicle inspection, have a valid tag, and carry current insurance on which you are not listed as an excluded driver — a borrowed relative's car fails the attempt if its policy excludes you. No pets or extra people can ride with you and the examiner.

  • It needs a valid tag, a security verification form you can show, and proper mechanical condition.

  • You must bring valid proof of auto liability insurance for the driving test.

  • Only you and the examiner may be in it — pets and extra people are not allowed.

  • The driving demonstration must be done in the type of vehicle that matches the license class you are applying for.

  • Service Oklahoma does not provide test vehicles, so you bring your own. A family member's or friend's car is allowed if it is in proper working order, has a valid tag and insurance, and you are not listed as an excluded driver on its policy.

Who gives the tests

Certified driver-education instructors and driving-school operators can be approved as designated examiners, so one of them may give the Class D driving-skills test to you as a learner-permit holder.

  • A certified driver-education instructor at a commercial driving school or a school district can become a Service Oklahoma designated examiner and give the Class D driving-skills test to learner-permit holders.

  • You take the drive test with Service Oklahoma or with an eligible designated examiner.

  • A professional driver examiner from Service Oklahoma gives and grades the tests, following state and national standards.
