Utah driver's license
Get your first license in Utah after moving to the US.
The short answer
Utah requires a driving skills test before it licenses you for the first time.1 An original regular Class D license costs $52.00 for an adult.2 That fee covers up to three attempts at the written knowledge test within twelve months, and after three failures you pay again for three more attempts.3 The person who brings you to the driving skills test must show a valid driver license and be at least 21 years old, or be a parent, guardian or spouse who is at least 18.4 During the test itself, you and the examiner are the only people allowed in the vehicle.5

Your immigration status

If your license from another state has expired
A valid license from another state or country is accepted as proof of driving privilege, and a U.S. state license must be surrendered when you apply.8
If you have no license to transfer
The division may not license a person who is under 16; a person 18 or younger who has not completed an approved driver training course; a person 19 or older who has not completed approved training requirements; a person who is not a Utah resident, unless they qualify for a non-domiciled CDL; or a person 17 or younger who has not held a learner permit for six months.9

Your Social Security Number
Giving your number, and who may see it
The driver license or identification card application asks for the last four digits of your social security number, used as an alternate form of identification for voter registration.11
Tests you take
Eye test
If you fail the vision test, you must get a Certificate of Visual Examination form from your eye doctor.14

To pass, the division requires 20/40 vision and peripheral fields (side vision) of 90 degrees in at least one eye. If you do not meet this standard with or without glasses, you must get a Certificate of Visual Examination form from your eye doctor.16
Drive test
If you present an out-of-state or out-of-country license, you may be required to pass a driving skills test.17
If you present an out-of-state/country driver license, you may be required to pass a driving skills test.18

Tries you get on the written test
The application fee pays for up to three attempts at the written knowledge test within 12 months. If you fail three times, you must pay another fee for three more attempts.3
You can take up to two written knowledge tests per day if the division can facilitate the testing. The fee covers up to three attempts within 12 months; after three failed attempts you pay another fee for three more. If you fail and need to return to the office, you must schedule a written retest appointment.22

Who can sit with you while you practise
You drive only with a licensed parent, legal guardian, approved driving instructor, or the responsible adult who signed for financial responsibility sitting next to you. Passengers can be in the vehicle.5
What to bring to the drive test
Who comes with you
Only you and the examiner are allowed in the vehicle during the driving skills test.5
When you arrive for your scheduled driving skills test, show the valid driver license of the person who came with you to the office. That person must be at least 21 years old, or a parent, guardian, or spouse who is at least 18.4
The car and its insurance
If you take the test at the Driver License Division, you should have driven your own vehicle there and be ready to test.27
The test vehicle must have working brake lights and turn signals, a working horn, tires with no bald spots, adequate brake pressure, a driver's side window that rolls down, an unobstructed windshield, two rear view mirrors, doors that open, a permanently attached passenger seat, working safety belts, and a working emergency/parking brake.28
Safety features such as parking assist and cruise control cannot be used during the skills test.29
Driving skills tests are not given when conditions could make driving unsafe, including bad weather or an unsafe or unregistered vehicle.30
The rear plate must show current registration, but a front plate is not required after January 1, 2025.31
You provide the vehicle for the driving skills test, and it must be properly registered and comply with vehicle safety laws, including working safety belts.32
You supply the vehicle, and it must be registered, clean, free of unnecessary debris and odor, and safe to drive.33
