You may change your Social Security surname before your green card if SSA can accept your current immigration documents, or afterward if not; a married-name change is something to document with USCIS, not a reason by itself to abandon your pending application.
“I entered the US on a K1 visa, got married, and applied for my green card. Should I change my last name on my Social Security card before or after I get my green card, and will changing it cause any issues with my pending USCIS application?”
Resumen
You do not have to change the Social Security card before your green card is approved. USCIS has a process for changing the name on a pending case; the practical risks are using an expired document at SSA and leaving USCIS with a different name from the one you want on the green card.
Whether to change your Social Security card now or after your green card depends chiefly on which current immigration document you can present to SSA.
You can request the married-name card now if you have a current K-1 that is not within SSA’s 14-day expiration window, or a current qualifying , along with your passport and marriage/name-change evidence. SSA recognizes K-1 on its I-94 work-authorization list, but requires current documentation for a replacement card. If your K-1 has expired or is too close to expiration and you do not yet have an , wait for a qualifying document before asking SSA to print the corrected card. If you requested a Social Security card on your , SSA says it will mail an original or replacement card after USCIS approves permanent residence. [Form SS-5](https://www.ssa.gov/forms/ss-5.pdf); [SSA’s I-485 card guidance](https://www.ssa.gov/ssnvisa/ebe.html).
Your pending receipt alone is not the current immigration document SSA requires to issue a replacement card. The SSA application expressly says it cannot accept a receipt showing that you applied for the document. [Form SS-5](https://www.ssa.gov/forms/ss-5.pdf).
In either timing, update your pending USCIS case separately if it shows a different name from the married name you want on your green card.

These steps put your chosen legal surname on the pending USCIS case and, when SSA can accept your documents, on your Social Security card.
Before the green card is issued
Settle on the legal surname you want USCIS to use
Compare the name on your pending with the married name you want. USCIS permits a legally supported married name or retention of your premarital name, subject to applicable state law. If the I-485 already uses your chosen name, a separate USCIS name-change request is unnecessary; otherwise, proceed with the pending-case update. While your I-485 is pending
Send the name change to USCIS if your I-485 differs
If your pending case is associated with a USCIS online account, upload the letter and supporting document as new evidence to that application. If USCIS has sent an interview notice or a related request for evidence, provide the letter and document at the interview or in the response. Without an associated online account, use the USCIS Contact Center at 800-375-5283 (TTY 800-767-1833); live calls and chats run Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–8 p.m. Eastern. Now with current evidence, or later with an EAD or green card
Request the corrected Social Security card when eligible
Complete [Form SS-5](https://www.ssa.gov/forms/ss-5.pdf) and bring it and the documents to a Social Security office or Card Center; the [SSA office locator](https://secure.ssa.gov/apps6z/FOLO/fo001.jsp) gives the serving office. The card request is free. If relying on a K-1 , SSA’s 14-day expiration rule matters; if it has expired and you have no , use a later qualifying document instead of your I-485 receipt. Bring immigration documents rather than mailing them. After approval, if you selected the SSA card option
Account for any card you requested on Form I-485
If you requested a Social Security card on your , SSA says it will mail an original or replacement card to the address on that application after USCIS approves permanent residence. Aligning your requested surname with USCIS before approval is therefore especially useful. [SSA’s I-485 card guidance](https://www.ssa.gov/ssnvisa/ebe.html).
