You can act now: separate your ex’s authorized-user cards from debts you actually signed for, correct reporting errors, and apply for rentals while you rebuild your own payment history.
“I am British and my SSN is only a year old. My credit score dropped from 700 to 450 after a nasty divorce where my ex surrendered my car and didn't pay cards I was an authorized user on. How can I rebuild my credit quickly so I can get a rental home?”
Resumen
A 450 score does not tell you which entries are correct, and you do not have to wait for a perfect score to approach landlords. You generally do not owe cards on which you were only an authorized user; the harder question is whether you signed the car loan or any joint card account.
The fastest useful action depends on your role on each card and on the car loan; you can pursue a rental while sorting those out.
For each card on which you were only an , ask its issuer to remove you and confirm the change. You generally do not owe that balance; if the former account still appears after removal, ask the reporting bureau to investigate. Losing that account’s history may also remove any beneficial history it supplied, so a score increase is not guaranteed. [2–5]
For any , address the balance and correct actual reporting errors; an authorized-user removal request does not undo joint liability. A divorce decree allocating payment to your ex does not change the creditor’s right to collect from a named borrower. [6–7]
Get the loan and sale accounting, dispute any wrong amounts or dates, and plan for any valid . Voluntary surrender does not itself erase the debt or prevent repossession reporting; a divorce allocation alone does not release a borrower. [7–10, 13–15]
If the car loan is being reported as your debt despite your not being a borrower, dispute that specific error with the reporting bureau and the lender, supplying the loan documents you have. Your role on the loan—not merely who possessed the car—is the key fact to establish. [7, 13–15]
Ask prospective landlords for an individual review, offer proof of current income and rental references, and ask whether a co-signer is acceptable; none guarantees approval. If a leads to a rejection or tougher terms, obtain the required notice and request the report within 60 days. [20–22]
An accurate negative entry generally cannot be removed simply because you need a rental or because your divorce was painful. Correct errors, but do not count on a valid repossession disappearing quickly. [10–11, 16]
Your British nationality and the age of your SSN do not tell us which agreements you signed or which entries are on your reports.

Get and mark up your three credit reports
Use https://www.AnnualCreditReport.com to request your Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion reports; online reports are available weekly at no cost. For every card and the car account, mark whether you are shown as an authorized user, joint borrower, or individual borrower, and note any duplicate or incorrect balance. A credit score alone cannot settle those account details. [1, 12]
Requisitos
After reading the reports
Separate your ex’s cards from your own debts
For each card where you were only an authorized user, call the card issuer using its customer-service contact on the statement or card, request removal, and keep confirmation. If the account continues to appear after the issuer removes you, ask the bureau reporting it to investigate. For a joint card, do not use the authorized-user route: joint holders owe the balance even if a divorce order assigned payment to one spouse. [2–7]
Requisitos
Before paying or disputing the car entry
Verify the car loan and dispute real errors
Establish whether your name is on the car loan. If it is, request the lender’s sale and remaining-balance accounting; voluntary surrender can leave a balance and a reportable repossession. If you were not a borrower but the report lists the debt as yours—or an amount, date, or duplicate is wrong—send a written dispute with copies of supporting documents to each bureau showing the error and to the lender or card issuer furnishing it. The bureaus’ online dispute pages are https://www.equifax.com/personal/credit-report-services/credit-dispute/, https://www.experian.com/disputes/main.html, and https://dispute.transunion.com/; use the furnisher’s dispute address on your report for its separate dispute. Investigations are generally free and usually completed within 30 days; wrong or unverifiable information must be corrected or removed. [7–15]
Requisitos
While corrections are investigated
Build a clean record in your own name
Make payments on your own accounts by their due dates and keep card balances low compared with their limits. If you cannot qualify for a regular card, consider a secured card, comparing its fees and interest before applying. Neither a new card nor a dispute guarantees a particular score increase or a quick return to 700. [16–19]
Requisitos
Do not wait for a perfect score
Apply for rentals and respond to screening decisions
Ask a prospective landlord to consider your current income and rental history, and whether a co-signer is an option; acceptance is the landlord’s decision. If a screening report contributes to rejection, a higher deposit or rent, or a required co-signer, the landlord must give you an adverse-action notice. Request the free report from the screening company named in that notice within 60 days, and dispute any screening error with that company; it must investigate within 30 days. [20–22]

Experian, authorized-user removal guidance
The reporting bureau describes asking the card issuer to remove your authorized-user status.
You're generally able to remove yourself as an authorized user by calling the credit card issuer and requesting the change.

CFPB, Joint credit-card liability
A jointly held card creates a different obligation from authorized-user status.
When you have a joint account, each account holder is responsible for the full amount of the balance.
CFPB, Debt after divorce

CFPB, Credit-report dispute instructions

CFPB, Credit-report investigations
Investigations and correction of credit-report mistakes are generally free and usually take about 30 days.
They must conduct a reasonable investigation, and fix mistakes as needed, usually within 30 days, at no cost to you.
CFPB, Furnisher dispute instructions
A furnisher must correct or remove information found wrong or unverifiable after investigation.
If the investigation shows the furnisher provided wrong information about you, or the information cannot be verified, the furnisher must update or remove the information and notify all the credit reporting companies after correcting it.
