For a typical partial move from India, start with ocean freight and compare three all-in quotes from FIDI-audited movers whose U.S. ocean contractor is FMC-licensed or registered.

I recently moved to the US from India and want to ship my belongings over. What are the most affordable and reliable shipping services to use, since standard courier charges are brutal?

Summary

You do not need to pay premium courier rates for the whole move. The manageable approach is to measure the shipment, price a shared ocean container first, and protect yourself with the customs exemption, FMC screening and a complete written quote.

Your best route depends mainly on whether you have a partial household, enough goods to justify a dedicated container, or only a small urgent batch.

Shared-container ocean freightbest start

Start here for multiple boxes or a partial household: combines smaller shipments in one container. Get three door-to-door quotes—Universal Relocations India plus two of AGS Four Winds India, Allied Moving Services India, Formula Group India or Interem are practical comparison candidates because the FIDI directory lists them as India affiliates subject to mandatory FAIM compliance and independent audits. The U.S. ocean contracting company must also be licensed or registered with the FMC.

Dedicated ocean containerlarge move

Ask the same movers for an comparison if your measured inventory is large enough that the shared-container quote is no longer attractive. Compare the final door-to-door total, not only the ocean-freight line, because terminal and destination charges may be excluded from an initial estimate.

Air freight or parcelurgent only

Use this only for a small batch you need quickly, and keep the main non-urgent inventory in the ocean quote. DHL Global Forwarding can be used as an LCL freight benchmark, but obtain written confirmation that its India office accepts used personal effects before treating it as a live option.

There is no defensible universal “cheapest” company; compare the same door-to-door scope after an actual inventory inspection.

Watch out for

One-year use ruleYour usual household effects can qualify for duty- and tax-free entry under 19 CFR 148.52 only if they were actually used abroad for at least one year, are not for someone else, and are not for sale. List newer items separately; CBP may require proof of use.
Ocean filing comes before loadingFor an ocean shipment, get written confirmation that the will be submitted no later than 24 hours before the cargo is loaded on the U.S.-bound vessel (CBP ISF guidance). Do not let the shipment sail with this unresolved.
Restricted items hide in ordinary boxesCBP distinguishes prohibited goods from restricted goods requiring permits; relevant examples include firearms, certain fruits and vegetables, animal products and some animals. Form 3299 also makes you identify alcohol, tobacco, meats, plants, seeds, wildlife products and similar items, so remove them from the ordinary household shipment unless the mover has documented the applicable permit and entry process.
The low quote may omit destination costsThe Federal Maritime Commission warns that port terminal-handling charges are often excluded and that sales promises may not be enforceable unless written into the contract. Demand a and signed insurance terms before paying a deposit.
The household-goods exemption is not foreverBecause you moved recently, this should not be an immediate problem, but 19 CFR 148.52 says goods arriving more than 10 years after your last arrival from the country of use generally lose the exemption unless CBP accepts an unavoidable-delay explanation; free entry is barred after 25 years.

Next steps

These steps produce comparable quotes, protect the duty-free claim and prevent an ocean shipment from leaving India without its required filing.

Before requesting quotes

Create one customs-ready inventory

Use the same list for every mover. Mark the goods that were used in your Indian household for at least one year and are not for anyone else or for sale; these are the items potentially covered by 19 CFR 148.52. Do not mix restricted goods into vaguely labeled boxes.

Requirements

Itemized packing list by numbered box
Separate list of items used abroad for less than one year
Separate list of alcohol, tobacco, food, plants, seeds, firearms, wildlife or animal products
Estimated replacement value for insurance

Before paying a deposit

Get three inspected, door-to-door quotes

Ask Universal Relocations India and two comparison movers from AGS Four Winds India, Allied Moving Services India, Formula Group India or Interem for quotes; ask for an comparison if the measured load is large. Each must separately state pickup, packing, export documents, ocean freight, origin and destination terminal handling, customs-broker service, inspection or storage charges, final delivery, unpacking and insurance.

Requirements

Indian pickup address
U.S. delivery ZIP code
Inventory and measured volume
Stair, elevator and long-carry details at both ends
Packing and unpacking choice

Before signing

Verify the companies and contract

Match the U.S. contracting name and number in the FMC OTI list at https://www2.fmc.gov/oti. Use the FIDI directory at https://www.fidi.org/find-fidi-affiliate as an additional audit screen. Reject verbal-only discounts, blank contracts and estimates that omit terminal or destination charges.

Requirements

Exact legal name of the U.S. ocean contracting company
FMC OTI license or registration number
Written estimate and full contract
Insurance terms and signed coverage document

Before ocean loading

Complete Form 3299 and assign the ISF filing

Download Form 3299 directly at https://www.cbp.gov/sites/default/files/2024-05/cbp_form_3299_0.pdf and give the completed form and packing list to the mover or customs broker handling entry. For ocean freight, obtain written confirmation that the will be filed no later than 24 hours before loading on the U.S.-bound vessel.

Requirements

Completed CBP Form 3299
Final packing list
Evidence of one-year use if CBP requests it
Written name of the party filing the ISF

At booking

Approve pickup only after the file is complete

Keep the signed contract, inventory, insurance document, Form 3299 and filing confirmation together. Approve pickup only when the contract identifies the destination agent and the full delivery scope.

Requirements

Final contract
Final inventory
Insurance document
ISF confirmation for ocean freight
Copies of Form 3299 and all receipts

Best way to ship belongings by sea?

u/AdvertisingGlad2667r/expatsFeb 5, 2026

I moved to France last year from Canada, and I only brought 2 boxes. One box was larger than the airline allowed, so I shipped it DHL for about $250 I think. The other box I brought on the flight as luggage, and it cost around $100.
Relocation to India - Shipping of Books

u/Firm-Bug-7089r/nriNov 13, 2025

We ultimately paid $910 for 9 boxes. Pricey, yes, but we had around 300 books plus 50+ DVDs. We initially planned to ship only the books and DVDs, but were advised to mix in some clothes, shoes, and household items so the shipment clearly looks like a personal relocation rather than a commercial shipment.

I used sendmybag.com, it’s the cheapest way to ship stuff to the US I found and they make you fill a form to make sure you won’t get tariffed on the stuff you’re sending since those are personal belongings
