You can drive or ship your car from Toronto to Austin, but no—TN status does not let you skip declaring it and satisfying the applicable U.S. car-import rules.

“I'm moving from Toronto to Austin soon on a TN Visa. What are my options for bringing my car over, like driving versus shipping? Also, is it true that I won't have to officially import the car since I'm on a TN visa?”

Resumen

You have two practical ways to move the car—drive it or ship it. The manageable part is deciding its emissions and safety paperwork before it crosses; your TN classification does not, by itself, decide whether the car qualifies.

You can drive or ship the car, but the important fork is whether you are bringing it to live in Austin or genuinely importing it for no more than one year.

Drive it across for the movedrive

For a car you intend to keep in Austin, prepare its EPA emissions and DOT safety basis before leaving Toronto, then declare it to CBP at the first U.S. border crossing and submit Forms EPA 3520-1 and DOT HS-7 under the provisions that actually fit the car. Keep the documents for Texas. EPA Code M-1 addresses certain Canadian vehicles and people residing here for more than one year under a worker or student visa; Code EE addresses qualifying vehicles identical in material emissions respects to a U.S.-certified version. A Canadian safety label may support HS-7 Box 2B with the manufacturer's VIN-specific letter. [19 CFR 148.11](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-19/chapter-I/part-148/subpart-B/section-148.11); [CBP vehicle-import guidance](https://www.cbp.gov/trade/basic-import-export/importing-car); [EPA Form 3520-1](https://www.epa.gov/system/files/documents/2024-08/form3520-1-2024-08-secured-enabled.pdf); [NHTSA Canadian-vehicle guidance](https://www.nhtsa.gov/sites/nhtsa.gov/files/documents/vig_canada09122017.pdf).

Ship it for the moveship

A carrier can transport the car, but it still needs the same EPA/DOT eligibility and CBP entry. CBP says shipments are normally cleared at the first port of entry unless sent in bond to another CBP port; its clearance paperwork includes the carrier's original bill of lading, sale or ownership evidence, and foreign registration. Obtain the entry documents for Texas rather than assuming delivery means importation is complete. [CBP vehicle-import guidance](https://www.cbp.gov/trade/basic-import-export/importing-car); [TxDMV foreign-vehicle guidance](https://www.txdmv.gov/motorists/buying-or-selling-a-vehicle/out-of-state-and-foreign-vehicles).

Bring it temporarily, then export itone year

Only if you actually qualify as a making a personal-use for no more than one year: DOT's HS-7 Box 5 requires export within that year and prohibits sale. EPA's Code O requires an EPA approval letter attached to Form 3520-1. CBP describes a conditional one-year, duty-free personal-use provision when the vehicle arrives with its nonresident owner; none of this erases the entry declaration. [NHTSA temporary-import guidance](https://www.nhtsa.gov/sites/nhtsa.gov/files/documents/tempinfojuly2016.pdf); [EPA Form 3520-1](https://www.epa.gov/system/files/documents/2024-08/form3520-1-2024-08-secured-enabled.pdf); [CBP vehicle-import guidance](https://www.cbp.gov/trade/basic-import-export/importing-car).

Skip importation because of TNnot a waiver

TN is your immigration classification, not an exemption from declaring a vehicle. CBP requires individuals to declare articles at first arrival, and Texas requires federal import compliance before it titles or registers a foreign vehicle. [19 CFR 148.11](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-19/chapter-I/part-148/subpart-B/section-148.11); [TxDMV foreign-vehicle guidance](https://www.txdmv.gov/motorists/buying-or-selling-a-vehicle/out-of-state-and-foreign-vehicles).

Neither transportation method bypasses federal clearance or Texas's later title-and-registration requirements.

Watch out for

TN status is not a car-import waiverYou must declare the car when it enters the United States. A temporary-import exception still involves an official declaration and has its own conditions; it is not permission to move the car to Austin without clearing it. [19 CFR 148.11](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-19/chapter-I/part-148/subpart-B/section-148.11); [NHTSA temporary-import guidance](https://www.nhtsa.gov/sites/nhtsa.gov/files/documents/tempinfojuly2016.pdf).
Canadian plates prove neither kind of complianceEPA emissions rules and DOT safety rules are separate. A Canadian-certified car may qualify for an EPA provision and still need the manufacturer's VIN-specific safety letter for DOT Box 2B; if it cannot use a straightforward safety route, permanent import may require a . [EPA Form 3520-1](https://www.epa.gov/system/files/documents/2024-08/form3520-1-2024-08-secured-enabled.pdf); [NHTSA Canadian-vehicle guidance](https://www.nhtsa.gov/sites/nhtsa.gov/files/documents/vig_canada09122017.pdf).
The one-year route has a hard endOnly use the nonresident route if its conditions actually fit your stay. The car cannot be sold in the United States and must be exported within one year; NHTSA says that period cannot be extended. EPA's Code O also requires its approval letter. [NHTSA temporary-import guidance](https://www.nhtsa.gov/sites/nhtsa.gov/files/documents/tempinfojuly2016.pdf); [EPA Form 3520-1, Code O](https://www.epa.gov/system/files/documents/2024-08/form3520-1-2024-08-secured-enabled.pdf).
Canada-registered does not mean duty-freeA vehicle must meet the automotive rules of origin to receive USMCA duty-free treatment; registration in Canada alone does not establish that. The federal duty, if any, cannot be calculated from your TN status or the car's plates. [CBP vehicle-import guidance](https://www.cbp.gov/trade/basic-import-export/importing-car).
Austin adds a separate deadlineAfter federal clearance, Texas still requires its foreign-vehicle process. New residents must apply for title and registration within 30 days of establishing residency; if the car was previously registered to you in Canada, the form specifies a $90 new-resident use tax instead of the ordinary 6.25% use tax. [Texas Form 130-U](https://www.txdmv.gov/sites/default/files/form_files/Form-130-U.pdf); [TxDMV foreign-vehicle guidance](https://www.txdmv.gov/motorists/buying-or-selling-a-vehicle/out-of-state-and-foreign-vehicles).

Próximos pasos

Work out the car's eligibility first, then clear it at the border and complete the Texas steps.

Before booking transport

Collect the vehicle's compliance and ownership evidence

Check the labels on this particular car. For the Canadian safety route under HS-7 Box 2B, obtain the original manufacturer's letter on its letterhead identifying the VIN and the U.S. safety standards it meets; a dealer letter is not the specified substitute. For an EPA Code EE claim, assemble the Canadian-vehicle proof described on Form 3520-1. [NHTSA Canadian-vehicle guidance](https://www.nhtsa.gov/sites/nhtsa.gov/files/documents/vig_canada09122017.pdf); [EPA Form 3520-1](https://www.epa.gov/system/files/documents/2024-08/form3520-1-2024-08-secured-enabled.pdf).

Requisitos

Canadian registration and ownership document
Vehicle identification number (VIN)
Emissions label and safety-certification label
Manufacturer's VIN-specific safety letter if using DOT Box 2B

Before the car enters the U.S.

Select the permanent or one-year entry provisions

If you are moving the car to Austin for longer-term use, match it to an actual EPA provision—potentially Code M-1 for an eligible Canadian vehicle and qualifying longer-than-one-year worker, or Code EE when its emissions-identical conditions are met—and an independent DOT route such as HS-7 Box 2B. A car that cannot meet the straightforward safety route may need a ; TN status alone supplies none of these findings. If you instead qualify for the genuinely temporary nonresident route, obtain EPA's Code O approval letter before entry, attach it to Form 3520-1, use HS-7 Box 5, and plan to export the car within one year. [EPA Form 3520-1](https://www.epa.gov/system/files/documents/2024-08/form3520-1-2024-08-secured-enabled.pdf); [NHTSA Canadian-vehicle guidance](https://www.nhtsa.gov/sites/nhtsa.gov/files/documents/vig_canada09122017.pdf); [NHTSA temporary-import guidance](https://www.nhtsa.gov/sites/nhtsa.gov/files/documents/tempinfojuly2016.pdf).

Requisitos

Planned length and purpose of stay
EPA emissions evidence for the selected Form 3520-1 code
DOT safety evidence for the selected HS-7 box

At entry

Declare and clear the car with CBP

If driving, declare the car to CBP at your first U.S. port of arrival and present its paperwork. If shipping, arrange for clearance at the shipment's first port of entry or in-bond movement to another CBP port; provide the carrier's original bill of lading and vehicle papers. Retain your HS-7 and customs-clearance evidence for the Texas application. [19 CFR 148.11](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-19/chapter-I/part-148/subpart-B/section-148.11); [CBP vehicle-import guidance](https://www.cbp.gov/trade/basic-import-export/importing-car); [TxDMV foreign-vehicle guidance](https://www.txdmv.gov/motorists/buying-or-selling-a-vehicle/out-of-state-and-foreign-vehicles).

Requisitos

Form EPA 3520-1 and Form DOT HS-7
Canadian registration and ownership or sale papers
Carrier's original bill of lading if shipped

After federal clearance

Complete the Travis County vehicle checks

Arrange the law-enforcement that produces the original signed Form VTR-68-A; the [Travis County Sheriff's 68-A page](https://www.tcsheriff.org/services/vehicle-resources/68-a-vehicle-inspections) provides the local appointment route and specifies photo ID and the vehicle's title. Obtain a passing emissions inspection before registration if your vehicle is subject to one in Travis County. [TxDMV foreign-vehicle guidance](https://www.txdmv.gov/motorists/buying-or-selling-a-vehicle/out-of-state-and-foreign-vehicles).

Requisitos

Vehicle and ownership document
Photo ID
Federal clearance and safety documents

Within 30 days of establishing Texas residency

File Texas Form 130-U at the county tax office

Take [Form 130-U](https://www.txdmv.gov/sites/default/files/form_files/Form-130-U.pdf) and the supporting papers to your county tax assessor-collector's office for Texas title and registration. If the vehicle was previously registered to you in Canada, the form specifies $90 new-resident use tax; otherwise do not assume that rate applies. Texas lists a $50.75 base registration fee for cars and lighter pickups, with other applicable charges beyond that base.
