You can start pruning paid-off secured cards now if your remaining limits will keep your balances low; you do not have to wait for the car-loan dispute to end.

“I came to the US in 2024 and my oldest credit card is 2 years old. I have one unsecured card and several secured cards with about $1.8k tied up in deposits. I haven't been able to graduate the secured cards because of an active fraudulent car loan with 13 late payments that is currently in dispute. Should I hold off on closing my secured cards while the dispute is pending, or start pruning them to get my deposits back?”

Resumen

You do not need every deposit tied up just because the car-loan dispute is pending. Your two-year-old history does not simply vanish when you close a card, but protecting your remaining credit limits and correcting the loan are both important.

You can choose when to release deposits separately from correcting the car loan; the trade-off is cash back versus keeping available credit.

Close selected secured cards nowcash sooner

If you need the deposit money and your unsecured card plus any cards you keep leave enough available credit for low balances, pay off and close one less-useful secured card at a time. You do not need to keep every card merely to seek an upgrade. Closing may raise , while deposit refunds depend on the issuer. Keep the most useful cards for nowprotect limits

If closing a card would leave high balances relative to your remaining limits—or you plan to apply for credit soon—keep that card while the loan error is addressed. Give extra consideration to your oldest useful card, whether secured or unsecured; CFPB says keeping an older, well-paid account may help, and closing can lower a score. [CFPB closing-card guidance](https://www.consumerfinance.gov/ask-cfpb/does-it-hurt-my-credit-to-close-a-credit-card-en-1231/).

Accept an upgrade if offeredif approved

If one of your issuers approves to an unsecured card, that can return the deposit without closing that account. It is an issuer decision, not a guaranteed result of winning the car-loan dispute. Whichever card route you choose, continue the car-loan correction process; closing a different account does not correct that loan’s reporting. [CFPB dispute guidance](https://www.consumerfinance.gov/ask-cfpb/how-do-i-dispute-an-error-on-my-credit-report-en-314).

Watch out for

A fraud dispute has two different routesIf someone opened the car loan using your identity and you did not take part in the transaction, you can request an without waiting for an ordinary dispute to finish. If the loan is yours but its late payments are wrong, use the ordinary credit-report dispute process instead. A bureau may refuse or undo a block if it finds the information was not caused by identity theft. [FCRA § 605B](https://consumer.ftc.gov/system/files/consumer_ftc_gov/pdf/fcra-605b.pdf); [CFPB identity-theft guidance](https://www.consumerfinance.gov/ask-cfpb/what-do-i-do-if-i-am-a-victim-of-identity-theft-en-31).
Closing can shrink your available creditClosing several cards at once can raise your even when those cards have no balance. That could lower your score; closing your oldest card does not, by itself, instantly erase its age from a FICO score while it remains on your report. Compare your remaining limits and balances before each closure. [CFPB closing-card guidance](https://www.consumerfinance.gov/ask-cfpb/does-it-hurt-my-credit-to-close-a-credit-card-en-1231/); [FICO account-age guidance](https://www.myfico.com/credit-education/blog/close-credit-card).
A deposit is not an instant refundPaying off and closing a secured card can release its deposit, but the refund follows that issuer’s terms; any card balance still must be paid. Do not count on receiving all $1,800 immediately or on an automatic upgrade after the loan is corrected. [Capital One’s issuer guidance, illustrating that policies vary](https://www.capitalone.com/learn-grow/money-management/secured-card-deposits); [CFPB closing-card guidance](https://www.consumerfinance.gov/ask-cfpb/i-want-to-close-my-credit-card-account-what-should-i-do-en-84/).
Do not rush a bureau complaintAn ordinary credit-report dispute generally has a 30-day investigation period, with specified situations allowing up to 45 days; the bureau then has five business days to notify you of the result. If an error remains, the CFPB’s complaint notice says to dispute with the bureau first and not submit an inaccurate-report complaint while that dispute remains active. This is separate from the identity-theft blocking route. [CFPB dispute timing](https://www.consumerfinance.gov/ask-cfpb/how-long-does-it-take-to-repair-an-error-on-a-credit-report-en-1339); [CFPB complaint notice](https://www.consumerfinance.gov/complaint/credit-and-consumer-reporting-complaint-notice-2/).

These steps let you protect your credit, pursue correction of the loan, and recover deposits without closing more cards than necessary.

Before choosing a card

Get all three credit reports and list your cards

Request your Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion reports at https://www.annualcreditreport.com/. On each, identify the car loan and its late-payment entries; for each card, note its opening date, credit limit, balance, and any annual fee. You can then compare your total card balances with the total limits that would remain after a closure. [CFPB reports](https://www.consumerfinance.gov/ask-cfpb/how-do-i-get-a-free-copy-of-my-credit-reports-en-5); [CFPB on utilization](https://www.consumerfinance.gov/ask-cfpb/does-it-hurt-my-credit-to-close-a-credit-card-en-1231/).

Do not wait for a card decision

Use the fraud route that fits the car loan

Case A—someone used your identity to obtain a loan you did not take part in: report it at https://www.identitytheft.gov/, then send each bureau reporting it your identity-theft report, proof of identity, the identified loan information, and a statement that it does not relate to your transaction. Request an under FCRA § 605B; the statutory clock is four business days after the bureau receives the required items. You can also freeze your files separately with Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion for free. Case B—the loan is yours but its late-payment history is wrong: dispute the specific entries with each bureau reporting them and the auto lender; explain the error in writing and attach copies of supporting documents. If a bureau dispute is already pending, keep its confirmation and follow its result rather than assuming closing a card will correct it. [FCRA § 605B](https://consumer.ftc.gov/system/files/consumer_ftc_gov/pdf/fcra-605b.pdf); [CFPB identity-theft guidance](https://www.consumerfinance.gov/ask-cfpb/what-do-i-do-if-i-am-a-victim-of-identity-theft-en-31); [CFPB dispute guidance](https://www.consumerfinance.gov/ask-cfpb/how-do-i-dispute-an-error-on-my-credit-report-en-314).

Requisitos

Copies of reports showing the loan and late-payment entries
Any dispute confirmation and supporting records you already have

Before releasing a deposit

Choose one secured card to keep or close

Keep your one unsecured card and consider keeping the oldest useful card if its terms are reasonable. For a card you might close, calculate using the limits that will remain; if the remaining cards would carry a high share of their limits, keep more credit available or lower their balances first. A closed card can still count toward FICO account age while reported, but its lost limit may affect your score sooner. [CFPB closing-card guidance](https://www.consumerfinance.gov/ask-cfpb/does-it-hurt-my-credit-to-close-a-credit-card-en-1231/); [FICO account-age guidance](https://www.myfico.com/credit-education/blog/close-credit-card).

Requisitos

The opening dates, limits, balances, and fees from step 1

One card at a time

Pay off and close a chosen card, then request its deposit

Pay the selected card’s balance in full, call its issuer to close it, and follow up with written notice of closure and a request for the security-deposit refund. Keep paying any balance until it is cleared: closing an account does not cancel the balance. There is no reliable refund date for your particular cards without their issuers’ terms; an approved may offer another way to recover a deposit without closure. [CFPB closure instructions](https://www.consumerfinance.gov/ask-cfpb/i-want-to-close-my-credit-card-account-what-should-i-do-en-84/); [issuer deposit guidance](https://www.capitalone.com/learn-grow/money-management/secured-card-deposits).

Requisitos

That card’s current balance and account details
A mailing address for the issuer’s written follow-up

After the bureau responds

Read the dispute result and recheck the reports

For an ordinary dispute, the bureau generally investigates within 30 days, with specified cases taking up to 45 days, and notifies you within five business days after finishing. Confirm that the loan and late entries were corrected wherever reported. If an ordinary bureau dispute ends without fixing the error, you can submit a credit-reporting complaint at https://www.consumerfinance.gov/complaint; the CFPB says not to submit that complaint while the relevant bureau dispute remains active. [CFPB timing](https://www.consumerfinance.gov/ask-cfpb/how-long-does-it-take-to-repair-an-error-on-a-credit-report-en-1339); [CFPB complaint notice](https://www.consumerfinance.gov/complaint/credit-and-consumer-reporting-complaint-notice-2/).

There’s no scoring penalty for closing an account. Closed accounts stay on your reports and continue to age for 10 years. Since you have other cards I wouldn’t expect a score change there.
