Your two-year-old cannot enroll in TK yet; when they turn four by September 1, your home address determines the usual school, but you can apply for limited alternatives rather than simply choosing any city’s public school.

“I am moving to San Jose, CA for work with a 2-year-old and want to know how public school enrollment for TK works. Do I have to use the school assigned to my address, or can I choose to send them to a public school in another city like Mountain View or Santa Clara? How do I sign them up?”

Resumen

You do not have to make a TK enrollment decision for a two-year-old today. Once your child is old enough, your address identifies the ordinary public-school route, and you can separately request another eligible school or district without assuming it will approve a place.

Once your child reaches TK age, your address gives you a home-district route, while other schools require a separate choice process.

Start TK nowtoo young

Your two-year-old does not meet the four-by-September-1 requirement for public . If their fourth birthday is on or before September 1, 2028, the first eligible year is 2028–29; if it falls September 2–30, 2028, the first is 2029–30. [d_114.s_46] [d_115.s_20-22]

Use your home districtusual route

Your San Jose address might fall in San José Unified, Santa Clara Unified, or another district. If it is San José Unified, TK students are assigned to the neighborhood school or, when that grade is full, a nearby school with space. Santa Clara Unified likewise bases ordinary TK placement on the school of residence and available space. A San Jose address within Santa Clara Unified is already a resident address there, not an out-of-district request. [d_280.s_2] [d_134.s_11] [d_297.s_165-166]

Ask for another school in your districtlimited choice

If your address is in San José Unified, request an to another TK school; placement is not guaranteed and depends on space after neighborhood students. If your address is in Santa Clara Unified, its published TK open-enrollment choice is Scott Lane Spanish Dual Immersion—not a general choice of any TK campus. [d_277.s_1] [d_277.s_22-23] [d_297.s_164-165]

Seek another districtapproval needed

An can allow TK in another district if the home and receiving districts approve. This is a conditional route, not a right to pick Mountain View or Santa Clara by city name: Mountain View Whisman currently expects to accept nonresidents only when a parent works for that district at least half-time, and Santa Clara Unified lists narrow exceptions including district employment. [d_116.s_28] [d_116.s_33-34] [d_137.s_27-28] [d_121.s_34-36]

Consider a public charterif offered

If a public offers TK in your child’s eligible year, apply to that school. State law generally does not make your home address within the charter’s district a condition of admission; if applications exceed capacity, places are assigned by public random drawing, subject to lawful preferences. This does not establish that a particular Mountain View or Santa Clara charter will offer TK or have a seat. [d_241.s_128-131]

These are the rules and district practices published now; your child’s eligible school year is still ahead.

Watch out for

Two is too young for TKYour child cannot start public now. The rule for 2025–26 and later requires a fourth birthday by September 1 of the school year; the state says a child who turns four after that date cannot enroll that year. [d_114.s_46] [d_115.s_20-22]
A San Jose address does not identify the districtSome San Jose neighborhoods are in Santa Clara Unified. Use your actual home address—not the city name or your work address—to identify the district and assigned school before applying. [d_280.s_2] [d_196.s_127-132]
Choosing within your district has limitsIn San José Unified, you can request another TK school, but approval depends on space after neighborhood students are placed; its currently published policy says requests received by April 1 are reviewed by May 1. In Santa Clara Unified, TK open enrollment applies only to Scott Lane’s Spanish Dual Immersion program; other TK placements follow the home school and available space. Do not assume these application dates or offerings will be unchanged when your child becomes eligible. [d_277.s_22-24] [d_297.s_164-166]
A job does not guarantee an out-of-district placeA parent’s employment can be a possible basis for school residency only under the stated conditions, and state law expressly says the work-location district need not admit the child. Mountain View Whisman currently anticipates accepting nonresidents only for its employees working at least half-time; Santa Clara Unified describes narrow exceptions, including its own employees. Merely working in San Jose does not make either district accept your child. [d_118.s_41-42] [d_137.s_27-28] [d_121.s_34-36]
A transfer denial has a clockIf you later receive a final denial of an , state law allows an appeal to the county board within 30 calendar days, after available district appeals have been exhausted. [d_321.s_27-29]

Próximos pasos

These steps separate what you can establish now from the enrollment and school-choice applications to make in your child’s eligible year.

Do this first

Match the birthday and address to the school year

Your child needs a fourth birthday by September 1: that means 2028–29 if they turn four by September 1, 2028, or 2029–30 if they turn four September 2–30, 2028. Use the Santa Clara County Office of Education district locator at https://www.sccoe.org/resources/families/Pages/School-District-Locator.aspx for your address. If it identifies San José Unified, its future-year school locator is https://woolpertinc.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=46b668b6d10842e58a044b14d051947f; if it identifies Santa Clara Unified, use https://www.santaclarausd.org/fs/pages/808. The city name alone cannot supply your assigned school. [d_114.s_46] [d_196.s_127-132] [d_280.s_2] [d_133.s_16] [d_120.s_142]
