No—you cannot seek TN admission this Monday for an October 5 job; the earliest regulation-permitted date is Friday, September 25, and you do not need the SSN before starting work.

“I am a Canadian citizen with a TN support package for a Computer Systems Analyst role starting October 5. Can I enter the US as early as this Monday to apply for my SSN so I don't delay my onboarding?”

Resumen

Your SSN does not have to arrive before October 5: SSA and USCIS both say a work-authorized employee may start while waiting for it. The practical plan is to seek TN admission on or after September 25, avoid working before October 5, and give HR the official pending-SSN guidance.

Your timing creates three possible routes, but only entry on or after September 25 can accomplish your TN admission properly.

Seek TN admission Mondaytoo early

September 21 is 14 days before October 5, outside the regulation’s 10-day advance-admission window [8 CFR 214.1(l)(1)].

Enter Monday as a visitorno SSN route

A visitor admission would not turn your support package into work authorization or qualify you for a work-authorized SSN; visitors may not work [8 CFR 214.1(e)(1); SSA Pub. 05-10096].

Seek TN admission September 25 or laterearliest Sep 25

As a Canadian, you may present your package to CBP at a designated port of entry or preclearance station. If admitted in , SSA treats TN as a work-authorized class, although you still cannot work before October 5 [8 CFR 214.1(l)(1); USCIS TN guidance; SSA POMS RM 10211.530].

The rule says you “may” be admitted up to 10 days early; CBP still decides whether your package establishes TN eligibility [USCIS, TN USMCA Professionals].

Watch out for

Monday is four days too earlyMonday, September 21, 2026 is 14 days before your October 5 start date. The TN advance-admission window is only up to 10 days, so the earliest date the regulation permits is Friday, September 25 [8 CFR 214.1(l)(1)].
Early entry does not mean early workEven if CBP admits you on September 25, you cannot perform work—including remote onboarding that counts as work—before October 5, because employment is allowed only during the [8 CFR 214.1(l)(1)].
Visitor entry does not solve the SSN issueAdmission as a visitor on September 21 would not establish work-authorized SSN eligibility: B visitors may not work, and SSA generally issues work SSNs only to noncitizens authorized to work by DHS [8 CFR 214.1(e)(1); SSA Pub. 05-10096, Feb. 2026].
SSA’s 10 days is a recommendationSSA recommends waiting 10 days after arrival before applying so it can verify DHS records more easily and quickly; this is SSA processing guidance, not another immigration waiting requirement [SSA Pub. 05-10096, Feb. 2026]. Your SSN is not required before you start work.

These steps keep your TN entry within the allowed window and prevent a pending SSN from unnecessarily delaying your job.

No earlier than 10 days before October 5

Seek TN admission on or after September 25

Present the package to CBP at a designated port of entry or Canadian preclearance/pre-flight inspection station. Ask for admission in for the October 5 position, but perform no work before October 5. For FY 2026, the land-border application fee is $30; that I-94 fee is not assessed for air or sea arrivals, while USCIS separately says applicable inspection fees are due.

SSA recommends waiting 10 days after arrival

Apply for your SSN after TN admission

Start at https://www.ssa.gov/number-card/request-number-first-time. If you enter September 25, SSA’s recommended 10-day point is October 5; waiting is intended to make DHS verification easier and faster. Complete the process at the scheduled Social Security office or Card Center within 45 days after starting online. If online self-scheduling is unavailable, call 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778). The SSN application and card are free.

Requisitos

Current TN Form I-94 or admission stamp
Unexpired Canadian passport
Foreign birth certificate if available within 10 business days; otherwise SSA may use your passport or a DHS document for age
At least two separate original documents or copies certified by the issuing agency

Before work begins

Keep your October 5 onboarding on schedule

Tell HR that SSA Pub. 05-10107 and USCIS Form I-9 guidance allow a work-authorized employee to start while the SSN is pending. The employer may complete Form I-9 Section 2 after you accept the offer and no later than the third business day after work begins. If the company uses , it should select “Awaiting Social Security number” when prompted, allow you to continue working, and create the case when your SSN arrives. Do not work before October 5.

Requisitos

Valid TN admission covering the October 5 employment
All other Form I-9 requirements satisfied

SSN not needed to start working. Speaking from first hand experience in Texas this year. Try Corsicana. I got mine done there earlier this year. Appointment was a few days away. Only like an hour and a half commute. Was worth it for me. Even after you go to the SSA office and successfully apply, they won’t give you the number right away and it’ll take a couple weeks to come in the mail. Or you can drop by again and just ask them for the number and they might write it on a piece of paper if you’re nice enough. I did that and it worked.
