Answered August 2026

Yes—file a separate USPS Change of Address for your other mail, but make sure USCIS itself has your friend’s address as the EAD mailing address because USCIS says USPS will not forward USCIS mail.

I submitted my EAD biometrics under Premium Processing and updated my address with USCIS to a friend's address because I'm moving. Is there anything else I need to do to ensure my card is delivered correctly? Should I also submit a Change of Address with USPS, or will USPS mail forwarding interfere with USCIS mail delivery?

Summary

You have already taken the most important step by updating USCIS. The remaining risk is manageable: confirm that the update is attached to your I-765 receipt, make the physical-versus-mailing distinction correctly, label the mailbox, and track the shipment.

Use the route that matches whether your friend’s address is only for mail or is also where you now live.

You are living with your friendsame address

Use your friend’s address as both your and , apply it to the I-765 receipt number and every other pending USCIS case, and place your full name on the mailbox. USCIS mails the card to the address on the benefit request and specifically recommends labeling the mailbox with your name.

Your friend is receiving mail onlymail only

Keep the place where you actually live as your and enter your friend’s home as your . The current Form I-765 expressly asks whether those addresses are the same and requests the physical address when they differ.

For either route, submit a separate USPS Change of Address for ordinary mail, but do not expect it to forward the EAD or other USCIS mail.

Watch out for

USPS forwarding is not an EAD backupUSPS generally says Priority Mail can be forwarded, but the more specific USCIS instruction—updated August 4, 2026—says a USPS address change does not update USCIS and USPS will not forward mail from USCIS. File the USPS change for your other mail, but have USCIS address the EAD directly to your friend’s address.
Make sure the I-765 was updatedChanging the address in your USCIS account is not enough unless the change was applied to the pending I-765: USCIS says to enter the receipt number for each pending benefit request. If you used paper Form AR-11, it satisfies the reporting duty but does not provide an automated case-system update, so use the online change-of-address tool and attach the I-765 receipt number.
Do not substitute a mailing address for where you liveForm I-765 and Form AR-11 distinguish your from your . If your friend’s home is only where you want mail sent, keep your actual residence as the physical address and use your friend’s home as the mailing address; if you are actually living with your friend, the same address can fill both roles.
Premium processing is not premium shippingFor Form I-765, premium processing guarantees a USCIS within 30 business days, not delivery of the physical card. USCIS separately says an approved EAD should be produced within two weeks, while actual delivery depends on USPS.
Special safe-address casesIf this EAD is connected to a VAWA self-petition, T or U case, Form I-765V, or an I-751 abuse waiver, USCIS uses special confidentiality procedures. You must explicitly change the address for every covered form; an unrepresented applicant may call 800-375-5283 with the receipt notices or send a signed AR-11 or written notice to the service center handling the case.
Narrow 10-day exceptionUSCIS’s general rule is to report a move within 10 days; A- and G-visa holders and Visa Waiver Program visitors are exempt from that reporting rule. Even in an exempt category, a person with a pending benefit request should still update USCIS promptly so correspondence and the benefit are delivered correctly.

Next steps

These steps make the friend’s address the direct USCIS delivery point and give you a clear recovery path if the card is missed.

Within 10 days of moving

Confirm your physical and mailing addresses

Go to https://www.uscis.gov/addresschange and sign in to your USCIS online account. If you actually live with your friend, use that address for both fields; if your friend is receiving mail only, enter where you live as the physical address and the friend’s address as the mailing address.

Requirements

Your actual current residence
Your friend’s complete USPS-formatted address

Before the EAD is mailed

Apply the change to every pending receipt

In the online change-of-address tool, enter the I-765 receipt number and each other pending receipt number. If you only mailed Form AR-11, complete this online case-linked step as well because USCIS says paper AR-11 does not provide an automated update to the case-management systems.

Requirements

Your I-765 receipt number
Receipt numbers for every other pending USCIS request

As soon as possible

Submit the separate USPS Change of Address

File at https://moversguide.usps.com/ or visit a Post Office. The live USPS page lists a $1.25 online identity-verification fee; choose a temporary order if the friend’s address is interim or a permanent order if it is your move destination. This reroutes eligible ordinary mail, but it does not update USCIS and must not be used as the delivery plan for the EAD.

Requirements

Old address
Friend’s forwarding address
Identity-verification payment method for an online request

Before approval

Put your name on the mailbox and track the card

Place your full name on or inside the friend’s mailbox where the carrier can see it. After approval, sign in at https://my.uscis.gov/ for automatic updates and the USPS tracking number, or use https://egov.uscis.gov/ to check whether USCIS mailed the card.

Requirements

Your friend’s permission to label the mailbox
USCIS online account or I-765 receipt number

If missing after mailing

Open a non-delivery inquiry if the EAD does not arrive

If tracking says delivered but the card is absent, start USPS Missing Mail at https://www.usps.com/help/missing-mail.htm. If it is still missing, appears returned to USCIS, or 30 days have passed since approval, submit USCIS’s “did not receive card by mail” inquiry at https://egov.uscis.gov/e-request/ndc or call 800-375-5283.

Requirements

USPS tracking number
I-765 receipt number
Delivery-status details

USCIS How to Change Your Address

USCIS must be updated directly, generally within 10 days, and a USPS change does not forward USCIS mail.

How to Change Your Address

If you have filed an immigration benefit request with USCIS, you must notify USCIS of any changes of address as soon as possible to ensure you receive all correspondence and benefits without delay. Additionally, all aliens in the United States must report a change of address to USCIS within 10 days of moving. This reporting requirement does not apply to A and G visa holders and visa waiver visitors. Changing your address with the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) will not change your address with USCIS and USPS will not forward your mail from USCIS. Please update your information with both USCIS and USPS.
