Answered October 2026

With the current I-765, you need a separate Social Security application; if you requested a card on an older version, follow up on that request.

“I recently received my EAD through a marriage-based adjustment of status, but I haven't received my Social Security card yet. Does the SSN card arrive automatically around the same time as the EAD, or do I need to apply for it separately at a Social Security office?”

Summary

Applying through Social Security is free, and a missing SSN does not by itself prevent you from starting authorized work while the number is pending.

Your next step depends on whether you actually requested an SSN card on an older work-permit application.

No earlier SSN request—or the current I-765Apply separately

Apply directly to the Social Security Administration (SSA) for your . The 08/21/25 I-765 only asks for your SSN “if known”; it does not include an SSN-card request option. With your already issued, you can use the separate SSA application process now. (Form I-765, Part 2, Item 13; SSA EBE guidance, separate-application section.)

You requested a card on an older I-765Trace your request

Trace that request rather than assuming you must start over. SSA’s published guidance says the card is mailed separately and should arrive within 14 days after the EAD. If fewer than 14 days have passed, that published window has not elapsed; if 14 days have passed without the card, follow up with SSA. Because the current form has changed, treat this as a follow-up benchmark—not a guarantee that your older request is being processed. (SSA EBE guidance, Form I-765 and missing-card sections.)

Under the combined process described by SSA, the SSN card is mailed separately—not in the envelope containing your EAD.

Watch out for

Older automatic-card advice is not the current formAs of October 23, 2026, USCIS lists the 08/21/25 I-765 edition, which asks for an existing SSN but has no option to request an SSN card. SSA’s still-published EBE webpage describes the earlier combined process. For a new request, follow the actual current form and apply through SSA; do not assume EAD approval starts an SSN application. (Form I-765, Part 2, Item 13; USCIS I-765, Edition Date; SSA EBE guidance.)
An I-485 request follows a different milestoneIf you requested an SSN only through your green-card application, SSA’s published I-485 process ties mailing to approval of permanent residence—not approval of your work permit. You can instead apply through SSA using your EAD rather than waiting for your green card. (SSA EBE guidance, Form I-485 and separate-application sections.)
A missing SSN does not automatically stop you workingYou may begin work while awaiting your SSN if you satisfy the Form I-9 identity and employment-authorization requirements. For an employer using E-Verify, the government’s instructions say to allow you to work and create the verification case once your SSN is available. (Form I-9 instructions; SSA Pub. 05-10107; E-Verify awaiting-SSN FAQ.)

Next steps

Use these steps to trace an existing request or complete your first SSN application.

Start here

Identify which application included your SSN request

Look at your submitted I-765—not just the fact that you received an EAD. If it was the 08/21/25 edition, its SSN field only asks for an existing number. If an older application included an SSN-card request, use SSA’s 14-day-after-EAD benchmark for follow-up. A request made only on I-485 follows permanent-residence approval instead. (Form I-765; SSA EBE guidance.)

Requirements

Your saved I-765 application or receipt
The date you received your EAD

If no request was made, or the card is overdue

Call SSA to trace your request or book an appointment

Call 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778). If you requested a card earlier, explain when your EAD arrived and ask SSA to trace that request. Otherwise, book an appointment for an original Social Security number at your local Social Security office or Card Center. (SSA Pub. 05-10096; SSA EBE missing-card guidance.)

Requirements

Your EAD
Any receipt showing an earlier SSN request

For a separate application

Complete Form SS-5 and bring your documents

Download Form SS-5 at https://www.ssa.gov/forms/ss-5.pdf and bring it with your documents to the appointment. The application costs $0, and SSA requires at least two separate documents. If you cannot supply your birth certificate under the 10-business-day rule, SSA may consider your passport or a DHS document as proof of age. This follows SSA’s dated February 2026 leaflet rather than the undated EBE webpage’s 14-business-day wording. SSA publishes a card-delivery estimate of two weeks after it has all required documentation and has verified your immigration document; verification can extend the wait. (Form SS-5 instructions; SSA Pub. 05-10096; SSA EBE application timeline.)

Requirements

Completed Form SS-5
Unexpired EAD, Form I-766
Unexpired foreign passport
Foreign birth certificate, if you have it or can obtain it within 10 business days
Original documents or copies certified by the issuing authority
