Your best next move is to strengthen your two existing cards, then target one travel card—not rush several applications now.
“I am a Canadian part-time US resident with an ITIN and a US residential address. I started my US credit journey in May 2026 with a $500 Capital One secured card and a $500 Discover unsecured card. What is the best way to build a strong credit profile, and what travel rewards cards should I apply for next?”
Summary
You already have a useful starting point: you can build credit with these accounts without carrying interest-bearing debt. With only about five months of history, consistent payments and time matter more than collecting more cards. [1][3]
Your best route depends on whether you will build mainly on your new U.S. history or can use an established Canadian banking relationship.
Our first future target for travel and dining would be Chase Sapphire Preferred: $95 annually, 3X points on dining, 2X on other travel, no foreign transaction fees, and transfers to Air Canada Aeroplan. Chase explicitly lists ITINs among accepted application identifiers. Capital One Venture is the simpler everyday-earning alternative: $95 annually, 2X miles on purchases and no foreign transaction fees. However, Venture is marketed for excellent credit, and its ITIN-only eligibility remains unresolved here—do not assume your existing Capital One account guarantees eligibility. These are future targets, not applications we recommend rushing today. [4][5][6][7]
If you are the primary holder of a directly issued Amex, have held it for at least three months, and qualify under its U.S. relocation process, offers a relationship-based application route. Your existing account must be open and in good standing, and Amex still considers any U.S. credit file. The U.S. Gold card is worth considering only for suitable spending: $325 annually, 4X at restaurants worldwide up to $50,000 per calendar year, and 4X at U.S. supermarkets up to $25,000, then 1X in those categories. Without an eligible existing Amex—or if the fee does not work for you—use another route. [10][11]
RBC Bank explicitly accepts a Canadian address and SIN without a U.S. SSN, and can use Canadian credit history. Its Visa Signature Black has no annual card fee, earns 1 Avion point per dollar, and offers travel or 1% cash-back redemption. This is a cross-border alternative if your Canadian credit is established, rather than a necessary third credit-building card. The bundle includes checking: its fee is waived for the first year, then standard Direct Checking is $39.50 annually with electronic statements. Foreign transaction charges still matter for Canadian-dollar spending. [12][13][14][15]

Watch out for
Next steps
Use this sequence to protect your young credit history and make your next application deliberate.
Start now
Automate full monthly payments on both cards
Set each card’s automatic payment to the full statement balance by the due date, and add a reminder to confirm the payment went through. Put a small, affordable purchase on each card rather than spending to the limit. You do not need to carry debt or take out a loan just to build a score. [1]
Requirements
Every month
Keep your $500 limits lightly used
Your combined limit is $1,000. As a practical budget, stay below $150 on either card and below $300 combined; a more conservative target is under $50 on each and under $100 combined. Those amounts correspond to 30% and 10% of your limits. Make an extra payment during the month when needed. These are low- targets—not magic score cutoffs—and you still pay the statement balance in full. [1][2]
Requirements
Before another application
Request your Experian report without substituting an ITIN for an SSN
If you have no SSN, send a written request for your free credit report with the listed documents to Experian, P.O. Box 9701, Allen, TX 75013. Review whether your two accounts, payment history and balances are accurate. If you find an error, dispute it with Experian and the company that supplied it. [16][2]
Requirements
November 2026 onward
Let the accounts mature before chasing a premium card
Use November 2026 as your first review point: an account opened in May reaches six months around then. A standard needs at least one account open for six months and recent reporting. Our cautious recommendation is to build toward a full year—around May 2027—before a fee-based travel-card application, unless a suitable Canadian-relationship route serves a real need sooner. That one-year target is our strategy, not a published lender requirement. Keep your current accounts if their costs remain acceptable; closing a card can reduce available credit and increase utilization. [1][3]
Requirements
After the foundation is in place
Submit one application through the route that fits
For Sapphire Preferred, apply at https://creditcards.chase.com/rewards-credit-cards/sapphire/preferred; its annual fee is $95. For the conditional Venture alternative, Capital One’s preapproval page is https://www.capitalone.com/apply/credit-cards/preapprove/; preapproval does not hurt scores, but proceeding to an application brings a . Venture-specific ITIN eligibility remains unresolved. For an eligible Amex transfer, call 877-621-2639 and provide your existing account number; the Gold annual fee is $325 if you choose that card. For the RBC bundle, use https://www.rbcroyalbank.com/services/cross-border/us-banking-bundle.html: the first-year checking waiver requires opening checking and applying for the card on the same business day in the same name; the listed opening deposit is $50, not a fee. Choose one route rather than submitting applications across all three. [4][5][7][8][10][11][12]

Legal sources
This answer draws on CFPB guidance, FICO’s scoring requirements, Experian’s instructions, and the issuers’ own application and product terms.
[1] CFPB — Good credit scores
You can build credit without carrying interest-bearing debt, using consistent payments and low balances.
Pay your loans on time; avoid getting close to your credit limit
You don’t need to carry a balance on credit cards to get a good score. In fact, you don’t need outstanding debt at all. Paying off the balance in full each month helps get you the best scores and keeps your interest costs as low as possible.
[2] CFPB — How to rebuild your credit
The CFPB presents low utilization as guidance, not a guaranteed score or approval threshold.
2. Don’t get too close to your credit limit
Some experts advise using no more than 30 percent of your total credit limit – while others say you should use less than 10 percent.
[3] myFICO — Minimum scoring requirements
A standard FICO score requires sufficient account age and recent reporting; this is separate from card approval.
Minimum requirements for a FICO Score
In order to receive a valid FICO Score, the credit report must have: At least one account opened for six months or more, and At least one account that has been reported to the credit bureau within the past six months, and No indication of deceased on the credit report (Please note, if you share an account with another person this may affect you if the other account holder is reported deceased).
[4] Chase — Online card applications
Chase expressly recognizes ITIN applicants in its application guidance.
Who can apply for a credit card?
Credit card applications are open to U.S. residents — in other words, people with a mailing address in the U.S. who are over 18 and either have a Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN).
[5] Chase Sapphire Preferred
The product page supplies Sapphire Preferred’s fee, earning categories, transfer partners and foreign-transaction policy.
Annual fee, rewards, Transfer Points and foreign transaction fees
You will pay no foreign transaction fees when you use your card for purchases made outside the United States.
[6] Capital One Venture
Venture offers straightforward everyday mileage earning, but its product page does not establish ITIN-only eligibility.
Everyday rewards, annual fee and foreign transaction fees
Get unlimited 2X miles per dollar on every purchase, every day.
[7] Capital One — ITIN applications
Capital One describes ITIN access for some cards, not an unconditional rule covering every product.
Capital One cards and ITIN applications
Capital One has a number of credit cards you may be able to get with an ITIN.
[8] Capital One — Preapproval
Capital One distinguishes its non-score-impacting preapproval check from the hard inquiry associated with applying.
Does pre-approval affect credit scores?
But if you move forward with the application, there will be a hard inquiry on your credit report. That can result in a slight and usually temporary dip in your credit scores.
[9] Capital One — Secured-card management
Capital One controls secured-card graduation through periodic reviews rather than customer requests.
Upgrading secured cards
A secured card can’t be upgraded to a traditional unsecured card by request. Capital One periodically reviews eligibility, and if your account becomes eligible for a traditional card, you’ll be notified by mail.
[10] Amex — Global Card Transfer
An eligible existing Amex relationship provides a special application process, subject to its relocation and account requirements.
Eligibility and information needed for a U.S. application
To be eligible for a new Card in the U.S., your existing Card must be issued by American Express, you must be the primary Cardholder, and have held the Card for at least 3 months. Your Card Account must be open and in good standing at the time you apply for a new Card in the U.S.
[11] American Express Gold
Gold’s supermarket bonus is U.S.-specific, an important limitation for someone spending in Canada.
Annual fee and Membership Rewards earning
4X Membership Rewards ® points per dollar spent at US supermarkets, on up to $25,000 in purchases per calendar year, then 1X points for the rest of the year. ‡
[12] RBC — Cross-border banking bundle
RBC provides an expressly Canadian-based route, with a conditional first-year checking-fee waiver.
Applying without a U.S. address, SSN or credit history; bundle offer terms
You do not need a U.S. address, and unlike most U.S. banks, RBC Bank does not require a U.S. Social Security Number (SSN). Your Canadian Social Insurance Number (SIN) is accepted in its place. You also don’t need an existing U.S. credit history to qualify — RBC Bank can use your Canadian credit background instead.
[13] RBC Visa Signature Black
Visa Signature Black offers a no-annual-fee card with Avion rewards and cash-back redemption.
Annual fee and Avion rewards
Every time you make a purchase with your card, you automatically earn Avion points that you can redeem for travel, cash back, gift cards, merchandise and more.
[14] RBC Direct Checking
A no-annual-fee credit card does not eliminate the bundle’s ongoing checking cost.
Direct Checking pricing
**Pay annually and save** – $39.50 per year with eStatements or $59.50 per year with paper statements
[15] RBC — Foreign transaction fees
Signature Black’s foreign-transaction pricing differs from its U.S.-purchase marketing.
Foreign transaction fee disclosure
RBC Bank Foreign Transaction Fees: Visa Signature Black – 1.5% of the U.S. dollar amount of the transaction, Visa Signature Black Plus – Foreign transaction fee does not apply, Visa Platinum – 3.0% of the U.S. dollar amount of the transaction.
