Answered October 2026

You can apply directly for a U.S. business Amex without a U.S. personal card first, provided you meet the transfer requirements; Mercury acceptance is not confirmed by the official sources reviewed.

“I am a Canadian with a US-registered LLC and a Canadian personal Amex card. Can I use my Canadian personal Amex history through Global Card Transfer to apply directly for a US business Amex card, or do I need a US personal card first? Also, will Amex accept my LLC's Mercury bank account?”

Summary

Amex’s U.S. transfer instructions expressly include Business Cards, so a U.S. personal-card stepping-stone is not a published requirement. The remaining issues are whether you meet the transfer checklist and whether Amex accepts Mercury for verification and payments—two separate questions. [1–3,5–7]

The deciding missing fact is whether you have the U.S. home address and other information required by Amex’s transfer process—not simply a U.S.-registered LLC.

You meet the U.S. transfer requirementsDirect application

Apply directly for a U.S. business card through using your eligible Canadian Amex account. Amex’s U.S. instructions offer Personal Cards or Business Cards and do not require an intervening U.S. personal card. You still need the requested U.S. home address, home phone number, bank details and identification information. [1–3]

You only have the LLC’s U.S. addressLLC alone insufficient

The LLC’s registration and bank account alone do not satisfy the published transfer checklist, which asks for your U.S. home address and home telephone number. A business or registered-agent address that is not your home does not answer that requirement. This rules out relying on the LLC alone for the published transfer route—not every possible Amex application channel. [3]

Eligibility to apply is not approval: Amex says it may use your existing account history when deciding your application. [8]

Watch out for

Your Canadian card must qualifyYou must be the primary cardholder, have held the card for at least three months, and have an account in good standing. The card must be issued by American Express—not merely carry the Amex logo through another bank. Amex also lists an exception for a card you cancelled within the previous three months. [2]
Canada’s consumer-only rule runs the other wayAmex’s Canadian transfer page excludes business cards for applications into Canada. That is not the rule for your move from Canada to the United States: the U.S. destination page expressly offers Business Cards. [1,4]
Passport-only business eligibility is unclearAmex’s U.S. checklist lists passport details, SSN or ITIN, but its phone-application instructions ask for passport details and an SSN or ITIN. These instructions do not clearly establish that you can obtain a business card with a passport alone. Do not assume your LLC’s information resolves that personal-identification requirement. [3]
Mercury support is not Amex acceptanceMercury provides bank letters and supports outside companies pulling payments by ACH; Amex supports bank-account bill payments. Neither fact establishes that Amex will accept Mercury for your application verification or particular payment setup. Treat those as separate questions, not a guaranteed yes or a blanket Mercury ban. [5–7]

Next steps

These steps let you pursue the direct business-card route while keeping the unresolved Mercury issue separate.

Before applying

Prepare your transfer information

Use Amex’s U.S. checklist at https://www.americanexpress.com/en-us/company/about-us/moving-abroad/. Confirm that your Canadian account meets the primary-cardholder, three-month and account-standing conditions. If you lack an SSN or ITIN, passport-only business eligibility remains unresolved; do not assume the LLC removes that issue. [2,3]

Requirements

Eligible Canadian Amex account and account number
Your U.S. home address and home phone number
U.S. bank account details
Passport and employment details
SSN or ITIN, if you have one

Supporting evidence, not guaranteed acceptance

Download your Mercury bank letter

In Mercury, click your company name, open Documents > Bank Letters, and download the letter for the relevant account. Mercury says the letter includes your company’s legal name and business address, account and routing numbers, and partner bank’s address. Keep it ready if Amex requests bank evidence; Mercury does not promise Amex will accept it. [5]

Requirements

Administrator access to your LLC’s Mercury account

Once you meet the published requirements

Apply directly through Amex’s business transfer channel

Call 877-673-6936 or 800-433-3550 and identify yourself as an existing Canadian cardholder applying for a U.S. business card through Global Card Transfer. Amex publishes business application hours as Monday–Friday, 9:00–24:00 EST, and Saturday–Sunday, 9:00–18:00 EST. Alternatively, its U.S. transfer instructions direct you to choose a Business Card online and use the application’s ‘Already a Card Member’ link. [1]

Requirements

Your existing Canadian Amex account number
The information prepared in step 1

After card approval

Set up Mercury payments only after approval and acceptance

In Amex’s online payment area, use ‘Manage My Banks’ to attempt to add your Mercury bank account. If accepted, select the account, payment amount and payment date; do not use the Mercury debit-card number, because Amex does not accept debit cards for bill payments. If Mercury’s controls are enabled, use https://app.mercury.com/payments/authorizations to authorize or review Amex’s pulls. Successful Mercury linking is not confirmed by the published instructions. [6,7]

Requirements

Approved U.S. Amex card
