Answered September 2026

Your plan forks by citizenship: a Canadian may obtain TN at the border and later return on an unexpired I-94 for the unchanged job, but a Mexican needs a TN visa first and you should not plan a same-day SSA walk-in.

I am planning to go to the US-Canada border next week to apply for my TN visa, then immediately visit the nearest SSA to apply for my first SSN using a virtual postal address. I then plan to return to Canada the same day, resign from my job, and fly to the US a week later. Is this a valid plan, and is this how the TN and SSN process should be handled?

Summary

Your risk-reduction idea—secure TN before resigning—can work for a Canadian when the later job remains unchanged. The part to change is the immediate SSA visit: handle the SSN after your final arrival and follow SSA’s verification and appointment process.

The correct sequence depends first on your citizenship and, if you are Canadian, whether you want TN decided before resigning or on your final move.

Canadian: border first, then returnworks if unchanged

You may request at a CBP-designated port of entry or preclearance station with the prospective-employer letter and credentials. If admitted, save your , return to Canada, resign and later seek readmission while that I-94 remains unexpired and the job and professional activities remain unchanged; postpone the SSN visit until after the final arrival (USCIS TN NAFTA Professionals; 8 CFR 214.6(d)(3)(ii), (g)(1)).

Canadian: apply on the final movecleanest

You may instead request when you make the final land or air entry. This avoids an extra inspection and lets you follow SSA’s recommended 10-day wait after the arrival on which you will remain in the United States (USCIS TN NAFTA Professionals; SSA Publication EN-05-10096).

Mexican: obtain the visa firstvisa first

You must apply for a TN visa at a U.S. embassy or consulate in Mexico before seeking TN admission at the border or airport. A Canada-border-only application is not the correct first step for a Mexican citizen (USCIS TN NAFTA Professionals).

Neither Canadian nor Mexicannot TN

TN is the USMCA professional category for Canadian and Mexican citizens. If you hold neither citizenship, this specific route is unavailable and another work-authorized classification would be required (USCIS TN NAFTA Professionals).

Whichever Canadian route you use, admission is decided by CBP and your later entry remains a new inspection.

Watch out for

Citizenship changes the routeIf you are Canadian, you normally request from CBP rather than obtain a TN visa; if Mexican, you must obtain the visa at a U.S. embassy or consulate in Mexico first. TN does not apply if you are neither a Canadian nor Mexican citizen (USCIS TN NAFTA Professionals).
Do not count on a same-day SSA walk-inSSA recommends waiting 10 days after arriving so it can verify DHS records, and you must complete the office visit within 45 days after starting the application. Self-schedule the appointment or call 1-800-772-1213 before visiting (SSA Publication EN-05-10096).
A virtual mailbox is not automatically approvedForm SS-5 asks for a mailing address where you can receive the card 7 to 14 days later. That supports using a deliverable mailing address, but the fetched SSA materials do not expressly approve every commercial virtual-mailbox provider; enter it only as the mailing address and only if it reliably accepts the card (Form SS-5).
Reentry depends on the same jobYou may be readmitted for the unexpired period on your without presenting the letter again only if the original professional activities and employer have not changed. Every application for admission remains an immigration inspection at which you carry the burden of proving eligibility, so take the full TN packet on your flight back (8 CFR 214.6(g)(1); INA 291).
Your first border trip must be genuineCBP must be satisfied that you seek entry for qualifying professional work and that your has a predictable end. Carry truthful evidence of the position, start date, assignment length, pay and qualifications; the regulation permits a prospective-employer letter, so it does not require you to resign from your Canadian job first (8 CFR 214.6(b), (d)(3)(ii)).

Next steps

This sequence separates TN admission from the SSN process and preserves the evidence needed for reentry and work.

Before the first U.S. entry

Prepare the complete TN packet

The employer letter should fully describe the professional activity, purpose of entry, anticipated stay, qualifications and pay arrangements. The position and your credentials must match a profession covered by 8 CFR 214.6 (8 CFR 214.6(d)(3)(ii)).

Requirements

Prospective U.S. employer letter
Professional duties, purpose, anticipated length and remuneration
Diplomas, degrees or other required professional credentials
Proof of the citizenship applicable to your branch

At the visa or admission stage

Use the route for your citizenship

If Canadian, request TN classification from CBP at a designated port of entry or preclearance station; this is not a Canadian TN-visa application. If Mexican, obtain the TN visa at a U.S. embassy or consulate in Mexico before seeking admission (USCIS TN NAFTA Professionals).

Requirements

Canadian: proof of Canadian citizenship and TN packet
Mexican: TN visa obtained in Mexico, passport and TN packet

After CBP admits you

Retrieve and save your Form I-94

Retrieve the electronic record at https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/ and verify that it shows TN status and the expected authorized period. Save a copy for SSA, your employer and your later entry (CBP Form I-94 guidance).

Requirements

Passport details used for admission

If you chose the Canadian border-first route

Return for the unchanged TN job

You may return to Canada after the successful admission, resign and later seek readmission for the remainder of the unexpired I-94 when the original employer and professional activities have not changed. Carry the full packet because you still must establish eligibility at inspection (8 CFR 214.6(g)(1); INA 291).

Requirements

Unexpired Form I-94
Passport
Complete TN packet as backup
Evidence that the employer and professional activities are unchanged

SSA recommends waiting 10 days after arrival

Apply for the SSN after your final arrival

Start at https://www.ssa.gov/number-card/request-number-first-time, then visit the local Social Security office or Card Center with the required documents within 45 days of starting. Self-schedule the appointment; if that is unavailable, call 1-800-772-1213 before visiting. Use the virtual address only if it reliably receives the card; Form SS-5 does not expressly approve every virtual-mailbox provider (SSA Publication EN-05-10096; Form SS-5).

Requirements

Current unexpired foreign passport
Form I-94 and current immigration documents
Foreign birth certificate if available or obtainable within 10 business days
At least two separate original documents or issuing-agency-certified copies
A mailing address that can receive the card 7 to 14 days later

When the employer’s job begins

Start the TN job without waiting for the card

SSA does not require you to possess the SSN before starting work. While the application is pending, your immigration documents can prove work authorization, and provide the SSN to payroll when it arrives (SSA Publication EN-05-10107; SSA POMS RM 10211.420).

Requirements

Valid TN admission and Form I-94

This establishes the different TN application routes for Canadian and Mexican citizens.

USCIS TN NAFTA Professionals

Canadian Citizens; Mexican Citizens

If you are a Canadian citizen residing outside the United States, you are not required to apply for a TN visa at a U.S. consulate. You may establish eligibility for TN classification at the time you seek admission to the United States by presenting required documentation to a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer at certain CBP-designated U.S. ports of entry or at a designated pre-clearance/pre-flight inspection station. If you are a Mexican citizen residing outside the United States, you must obtain a visa to enter the United States as a TN nonimmigrant. You should apply for a TN visa directly at a U.S. embassy or consulate in Mexico.

(b)

Temporary entry, as defined in the USMCA, means entry without the intent to establish permanent residence. The alien must satisfy the inspecting immigration officer that the proposed stay is temporary. A temporary period has a reasonable, finite end that does not equate to permanent residence. In order to establish that the alien's entry will be temporary, the alien must demonstrate to the satisfaction of the inspecting immigration officer that his or her work assignment in the United States will end at a predictable time and that he or she will depart upon completion of the assignment.
