No—you cannot seek TN admission this Monday for an October 5 job; the earliest regulation-permitted date is Friday, September 25, and you do not need the SSN before starting work.
“I am a Canadian citizen with a TN support package for a Computer Systems Analyst role starting October 5. Can I enter the US as early as this Monday to apply for my SSN so I don't delay my onboarding?”
Summary
Your SSN does not have to arrive before October 5: SSA and USCIS both say a work-authorized employee may start while waiting for it. The practical plan is to seek TN admission on or after September 25, avoid working before October 5, and give HR the official pending-SSN guidance.
Your timing creates three possible routes, but only entry on or after September 25 can accomplish your TN admission properly.
September 21 is 14 days before October 5, outside the regulation’s 10-day advance-admission window [8 CFR 214.1(l)(1)].
A visitor admission would not turn your support package into work authorization or qualify you for a work-authorized SSN; visitors may not work [8 CFR 214.1(e)(1); SSA Pub. 05-10096].
As a Canadian, you may present your package to CBP at a designated port of entry or preclearance station. If admitted in , SSA treats TN as a work-authorized class, although you still cannot work before October 5 [8 CFR 214.1(l)(1); USCIS TN guidance; SSA POMS RM 10211.530].
The rule says you “may” be admitted up to 10 days early; CBP still decides whether your package establishes TN eligibility [USCIS, TN USMCA Professionals].

Next steps
These steps keep your TN entry within the allowed window and prevent a pending SSN from unnecessarily delaying your job.
No earlier than 10 days before October 5
Seek TN admission on or after September 25
Present the package to CBP at a designated port of entry or Canadian preclearance/pre-flight inspection station. Ask for admission in for the October 5 position, but perform no work before October 5. For FY 2026, the land-border application fee is $30; that I-94 fee is not assessed for air or sea arrivals, while USCIS separately says applicable inspection fees are due.
Requirements
SSA recommends waiting 10 days after arrival
Apply for your SSN after TN admission
Start at https://www.ssa.gov/number-card/request-number-first-time. If you enter September 25, SSA’s recommended 10-day point is October 5; waiting is intended to make DHS verification easier and faster. Complete the process at the scheduled Social Security office or Card Center within 45 days after starting online. If online self-scheduling is unavailable, call 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778). The SSN application and card are free.
Requirements
Before work begins
Keep your October 5 onboarding on schedule
Tell HR that SSA Pub. 05-10107 and USCIS Form I-9 guidance allow a work-authorized employee to start while the SSN is pending. The employer may complete Form I-9 Section 2 after you accept the offer and no later than the third business day after work begins. If the company uses , it should select “Awaiting Social Security number” when prompted, allow you to continue working, and create the case when your SSN arrives. Do not work before October 5.

This answer relies on the current DHS regulation, USCIS TN and Form I-9 guidance, SSA publications and POMS, E-Verify instructions, and the DHS fee notice.
8 CFR 214.1(l)(1)
TN applicants may be admitted at most 10 days before the authorized validity period, but cannot work during that early-entry period.
(l)(1)
An alien admissible in E-1, E-2, E-3, H-1B, L-1, or TN classification and his or her dependents may be admitted to the United States or otherwise provided such status for the validity period of the petition, or for a validity period otherwise authorized for the E-1, E-2, E-3, and TN classifications, plus an additional period of up to 10 days before the validity period begins and 10 days after the validity period ends. Unless authorized under 8 CFR 274a.12, the alien may not work except during the validity period.

USCIS TN USMCA Professionals
A Canadian can request TN classification directly from CBP using citizenship evidence, an employer letter, and applicable credentials.
Canadian Citizens
You may establish eligibility for TN classification at the time you seek admission to the United States by presenting required documentation to a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer at certain CBP-designated U.S. ports of entry or at a designated pre-clearance/pre-flight inspection station. You must provide the following documentation to the CBP officer: Proof of Canadian citizenship; Letter from your prospective employer detailing items such as the professional capacity in which you will work in the United States, the purpose of your employment, your length of stay, and your educational qualifications; and Credentials evaluation (if applicable), together with any applicable fees.

SSA Pub. No. 05-10096
SSA recommends—but does not command—a 10-day wait, provides the online/in-person process, and requires original or agency-certified evidence.
Pages 2–4
If you are unable or choose not to apply for an SSN using one of the methods above, we recommend you wait 10 days after arriving in the United States to apply for an SSN. This will make it easier for us to verify your DHS documents online. This will also speed up the processing of your SSN application. If you are lawfully present in the United States, you should start your application online by visiting our Request a Social Security number for the first time page at www.ssa.gov/number-card/request-number-first-time. To complete the application process, you must visit your local Social Security office or Card Center with the required documents within 45 days of starting the process. Applying for an SSN and card is free.
SSA Pub. No. 05-10096
This lists the identity, immigration-status, and age evidence needed for the SSN appointment.
Pages 3–4
To prove your identity and work-authorized immigration status, you will need to show us your current U.S. immigration documents and your unexpired foreign passport. You must present your foreign birth certificate if you have it or can get it within 10 business days. If not, we can consider other documents, such as your unexpired passport or a document issued by DHS, as evidence of your age. All documents must be either originals or copies certified by the issuing agency. We cannot accept photocopies or notarized copies of documents. However, you must provide at least two separate documents.
SSA Pub. No. 05-10107
A pending SSN does not prevent a properly work-authorized TN employee from starting work.

We don’t require you to have an SSN before you start working. While you wait for your SSN, your immigration documents can prove your authorization to work in the United States.
USCIS Handbook M-274 §3.0
USCIS confirms that an employee satisfying all other Form I-9 requirements may work while waiting for an SSN.
3.0
Employees who have not yet received their Social Security number and who can satisfy all other Form I-9 requirements may work while awaiting their Social Security number.
E-Verify FAQ
An E-Verify employer must let the employee continue working and defer the case until the SSN is available.
A case cannot be created in E-Verify without an SSN. Allow the employee to continue to work and create a case in E-Verify using the employee’s SSN as soon as it is available. If you are unable to create a case by the third business day after the employee’s first day of employment, select Awaiting Social Security number when prompted by E-Verify.
DHS FY 2026 HR-1 Fee Notice
The Form I-94 component is $30 at a land border for FY 2026 and is not assessed for air or sea arrivals; this is not necessarily the entire TN inspection charge.
FY 2026 HR-1 I-94 fee
The HR-1 I-94 fee for FY 2026 will remain at $24 ($24 + $0). Accordingly, the total fee to apply for a CBP Form I-94 at a land border port of entry for FY 2026 will continue to be $30, consisting of the $6 land border fee and the $24 HR-1 fee. CBP will not assess a fee for aliens arriving at an air or sea port of entry because such aliens are not required to submit an application for a CBP Form I-94.
