You need a valid Canadian passport, a complete employer-and-credential packet, and the $50 fee—but if Tesla is using Engineer or another bachelor-only TN category, you cannot qualify yet with only an unfinished transcript.

I am a Canadian citizen traveling out of YVR to intern at Tesla on a TN visa. I haven't graduated yet, so I have a hardcopy of my official transcript but no degree, along with the official TN documents from my employer. What other documents do I need to prepare for the border?

Summary

The word “intern” does not automatically block TN, and there are narrow no-degree categories. The hard part is proving that Tesla’s exact category and your actual duties fit one of them; more generic border paperwork cannot cure a missing required degree.

Your correct route depends on the profession named in Tesla’s packet and whether the placement is professional work or genuine novice training.

TN Engineer or another bachelor-only professionnot yet

If Tesla’s packet says Engineer and you have neither an awarded related baccalaureate/licenciatura nor a state/provincial license, you do not yet meet the minimum credential. Your current transcript cannot replace the missing degree, and experience cannot be substituted (USCIS Policy Manual, Vol. 2, Part P, Chs. 3 and 6).

TN Scientific Technician/Technologiststrict exception

This can work without a bachelor’s only if the actual role is work: you have theoretical knowledge and practical problem-solving ability in a listed science or engineering field, directly support a qualifying supervisory professional, and can document extensive directly related experience. Your transcript may support knowledge, but it is not the whole proof (USCIS Policy Manual, Vol. 2, Part P, Ch. 6).

TN category with another listed alternativeif qualified

Use this only if the exact USMCA profession provides an alternative you already possess. For example, Computer Systems Analyst permits a completed Canadian or U.S. postsecondary diploma issued after at least two years of study plus three years of experience; an unfinished transcript is not that completed credential (USCIS Policy Manual, Vol. 2, Part P, Ch. 6).

J-1 Intern for structured trainingdifferent program

If the Tesla placement is truly supervised work-based learning and you are enrolled full-time at a degree- or certificate-granting postsecondary institution outside the United States, the separate route may fit. A designated sponsor must complete Form DS-7002 and issue Form DS-2019 before you travel; the program cannot be a substitute for ordinary employment (22 CFR 62.22).

For TN, the governing regulation’s profession-and-credential requirements control; the word “intern” on its own neither approves nor defeats the case.

Watch out for

A transcript is not a degreeIf Tesla’s TN letter names Engineer—or another profession whose minimum credential is a baccalaureate—your unfinished transcript does not satisfy the rule. Engineer requires a related baccalaureate/licenciatura or a state/provincial license, and experience cannot replace a required degree (USCIS Policy Manual, Vol. 2, Part P, Chs. 3 and 6).
“Intern” duties can sink TNThe title “intern” is not automatically fatal, but your actual work must be at a . State Department TN guidance says a true novice or trainee role does not qualify; the employer letter should therefore describe professional duties rather than a learning-only placement (9 FAM 402.17-5(A)).
A no-degree category needs its own proof does not require a bachelor’s degree, but you must prove relevant theoretical knowledge and practical ability, work in direct support of a qualifying supervisory professional, and—under current USCIS guidance—provide extensive directly related work-experience evidence. A transcript alone does not establish those additional elements (USCIS Policy Manual, Vol. 2, Part P, Ch. 6).
The employer’s label is not enoughThe letter must identify the exact USMCA profession and describe the daily duties, qualifications, duration, and pay. CBP must be satisfied that both the position and you meet that profession; Tesla cannot cure a mismatch merely by changing the title (8 CFR 214.6(d)(3)(ii)).
The internship must have a fixed endTN is temporary entry. Your package should give a predictable end date, and you must be able to explain that you will leave when the assignment ends (8 CFR 214.6(b)).
YVR inspection happens before the flightVancouver International Airport has CBP preclearance in International Terminal, Level 3. You apply for admission there before boarding, not after landing in the United States (CBP Preclearance, modified June 24, 2026).
J-1 is a separate route, not extra TN paperworkIf this is truly structured entry-level training, a program may fit a current full-time student at a foreign postsecondary school. It requires a State Department-designated sponsor and completed Forms DS-7002 and DS-2019 before travel; your TN packet cannot substitute for them (22 CFR 62.22).

Next steps

Use these steps to decide whether you can travel on the current TN packet and, if so, present a complete application at YVR.

Before going to the airport

Identify the profession named in Tesla’s letter

The packet must identify the USMCA profession and explain the professional capacity, purpose, daily duties, fixed duration, qualifications, and remuneration. If it says Engineer or another bachelor-only profession and you do not hold the required degree or listed license alternative, stop: additional travel documents will not fix the eligibility gap.

Requirements

Tesla TN support letter and full job description
Exact USMCA profession named in the packet
Internship start date, end date, duties, and pay terms

Only continue with TN if one branch fits

Match your evidence to that profession

Keep the hardcopy transcript, but treat it only as supporting evidence. For , the packet should identify the supervisory professional, that person’s qualifying field and duties, your direct-support duties, and your own knowledge and experience. For an experience-based alternative, USCIS says the evidence should be letters from former employers.

Requirements

Engineer: awarded related baccalaureate/licenciatura or state/provincial license
Scientific Technician/Technologist: evidence of listed-field knowledge, practical ability, extensive related experience, and direct support of a qualifying supervisor
Computer Systems Analyst alternative: completed qualifying two-year Canadian/U.S. diploma plus three years of experience
Former-employer letters for every experience requirement

If the TN professional-duty test fails

Use J-1 paperwork instead if this is novice training

A genuine training placement is not repaired by relabeling it TN. Under 22 CFR 62.22, the designated sponsor must complete and sign Form DS-7002 before issuing Form DS-2019; obtain that separate packet before traveling under the route.

Requirements

Current full-time enrollment at a qualifying postsecondary institution outside the United States
State Department-designated J-1 sponsor
Fully signed Form DS-7002
Sponsor-issued Form DS-2019

After confirming TN eligibility

Assemble the YVR TN folder

A Canadian does not first need a TN visa from a U.S. consulate. Present this packet directly to CBP at YVR preclearance. A North American degree does not trigger the regulatory evaluation rule; a qualifying degree from outside Canada, Mexico, or the United States does.

Requirements

Valid Canadian passport
Tesla’s detailed TN support letter and supporting packet
Original qualifying credential or license for the named profession
Required former-employer experience letters
if the qualifying degree was issued outside Canada, Mexico, or the United States
Payment method for the $50 TN classification-request fee

Before boarding the U.S.-bound flight

Apply at YVR preclearance

Go to CBP Preclearance at Vancouver International Airport, International Terminal, Level 3. Ask for admission in , present the packet, and answer consistently with the employer letter; CBP performs the U.S. immigration inspection before you board.

Requirements

Complete TN packet
Valid passport
Clear explanation of actual duties and the fixed assignment end

Canadian Citizens

If you are a Canadian citizen residing outside the United States, you are not required to apply for a TN visa at a U.S. consulate. You may establish eligibility for TN classification at the time you seek admission to the United States by presenting required documentation to a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer at certain CBP-designated U.S. ports of entry or at a designated pre-clearance/pre-flight inspection station. You must provide the following documentation to the CBP officer: Proof of Canadian citizenship; Letter from your prospective employer detailing items such as the professional capacity in which you will work in the United States, the purpose of your employment, your length of stay, and your educational qualifications; and Credentials evaluation (if applicable), together with any applicable fees.
