You do not need original academic records under USCIS’s published pre-approved TN checklist; bring your valid Canadian passport, I-797B approval notice, and a copy of the complete I-129 filing packet.

“I am a Canadian citizen flying out of YYZ with a TN pre-approval (I-797B). Do I only need my approval notice and passport to enter the US, or do I also need to carry my original degree and unsealed transcripts?”

Summary

USCIS treats your pre-approved case differently from a fresh TN application at the airport. Carry copies of the academic evidence that was filed with your petition, but the published pre-approval checklist does not require your original degree or unsealed transcripts.

Watch out for

Do not stop at two documentsYour passport and I-797B are the core admission documents, but USCIS also says you should carry a copy of the entire Form I-129 filing and every supporting document submitted, so you can answer eligibility questions. If that filing included degree or transcript copies, carry those copies in your hand luggage. [Source 1]
Do not use the fresh-application checklistA Canadian applying for TN classification directly at the border without USCIS pre-approval follows a different checklist involving an employer letter and, when applicable, a credentials evaluation. You already have an approved Form I-129, so your governing USCIS checklist is proof of citizenship plus the approval notice, backed up by a copy of the filed petition packet. [Sources 1 and 3]
Approval is not admissionThe I-797B approves the petition, but you must still apply for admission at YYZ . USCIS says you are admitted in TN status only if the CBP officer finds you eligible, so keep the complete filed packet accessible for questions. [Source 1]

Next steps

These steps give CBP the required admission documents and the backup evidence USCIS recommends.

Before leaving for YYZ

Pack the pre-approved TN document set

Put any degree and transcript copies that were actually filed with USCIS inside the supporting packet. USCIS tells a pre-approved Canadian applicant to provide proof of citizenship and the approval notice and to carry a copy of the petition and all submitted supporting documents; it does not instruct you to obtain a new original degree or unsealed transcripts. Requirements

Valid Canadian passport
Form I-797B approval notice for the approved Form I-129
Copy of the complete Form I-129 and every supporting document submitted to USCIS

Before boarding your U.S.-bound flight

Apply for TN admission at YYZ

At YYZ , present your passport and I-797B and request TN admission based on the approved Form I-129. Keep the copied petition packet accessible for questions because CBP must still find you eligible before admitting you. [Sources 1, 4, and 5]

Requirements

Valid Canadian passport
I-797B approval notice
Filed petition copy within reach

After CBP admits you

Retrieve your admission record

Retrieve and print your most recent at https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/I94/recent.html. CBP identifies this as your lawful record of admission. [Source 6]

TN Approval (I-797b) with CS Degree

u/Vegetable-Salad-5448r/tnvisaAug 9, 2026

I recently entered the U.S. through YUL on TN status. My employer had filed for USCIS pre-approval, so I traveled with my I-797B approval notice in hand. I have a Bachelor of Computer Science degree, and my role is Software Engineer under the Engineer TN category. The process at YUL was very smooth and took less than five minutes once I reached the CBP booth. I was asked what my TN category was, and that was essentially it. The only documents I presented were my passport and I-797B.
