If yours is a Canadian-market CR-V, American Honda’s warranty is conditional—not automatic—and you should register it in Florida before waiting for your driver license because the deadlines are 10 days versus 30 days.

“I recently got a TN visa and am moving to Florida. I am importing my 2026 Honda CRV and getting a 30-day compliance letter. Will Honda USA honor my factory warranty? Also, what are the next steps after importing? Should I get my Florida driver's license before registering the car, or register it first, especially since I don't have a permanent address yet?”

Resumen

You do not need to wait for a permanent lease or a Florida driver license before dealing with the car. The manageable sequence is federal import, Florida insurance, title/registration using another accepted identity document, and then the Florida license with current-address proof.

Your permanent-import and warranty route depends on the CR-V’s original market, certification labels and the exact manufacturer letter.

Canadian vehicle with an acceptable letterbest route

For a personal-use, non-salvage Canadian-certified CR-V, use only if American Honda’s VIN-specific letter contains the conformity findings NHTSA requires. EPA Form 3520-1 separately uses code B if the unmodified vehicle bears a U.S. EPA label, or code EE when the Canadian vehicle is identical in all material respects to a U.S.-certified version and has the required proof (NHTSA Canadian Vehicle Importation Guidelines; EPA Form 3520-1). American Honda says it will provide warranty coverage for the applicable period if the Canadian transfer requirements apply and the required packet is submitted (Honda Canada Vehicle Movement FAQ).

Canadian vehicle whose letter failsRI fallback

If American Honda refuses the letter or it identifies a disqualifying noncompliance, permanent Box 2B import does not work. The fallback is HS-7 Box 3 through a or a contract with one; Florida then requires the bond letter and RI contract, when applicable (NHTSA Canadian Vehicle Importation Guidelines; FLHSMV TL-10).

One-year nonresident importmust export

This is not a permanent-import shortcut. A qualifying nonresident may bring a foreign-registered vehicle for personal use, but it cannot be sold and must be exported within one year (NHTSA Temporary Importations).

Mexican or other-market CR-Vdifferent rules

Do not rely on the Canadian Box 2B and warranty-transfer instructions. American Honda’s standard 2026 warranty booklet covers vehicles distributed by American Honda and sold or leased by an authorized U.S.-territory dealer; a separate official U.S.-coverage rule for a Mexican-market CR-V was not established by the fetched sources (2026 Honda Warranty Booklet).

Your TN classification does not replace the vehicle-specific safety, emissions, ownership and Florida-registration documents.

Watch out for

Compliance letter ≠ warranty transferYour supports the federal import declaration, but it does not by itself activate U.S. warranty coverage. Honda Canada lists a separate warranty packet, while Florida requires the manufacturer’s confirmation letter when HS-7 Box 2B is selected (Honda Canada Vehicle Movement FAQ; FLHSMV TL-10).
Honda’s timing instructions conflictHonda says to fax or mail the warranty documents before moving, but its own list includes your current U.S. registration, which you cannot receive until after registration. Start the case before moving through American Honda Automobile Customer Relations at 1-800-999-1009, but do not assume coverage is active until American Honda confirms how to complete your file (Honda Canada Vehicle Movement FAQ).
Temporary import is not a permanent solutionA nonresident may temporarily import a nonconforming vehicle for personal use, but the vehicle cannot be sold and must be exported within one year. Do not use that route if your plan is to keep and permanently register the CR-V in Florida (NHTSA Temporary Importations).
Florida may charge substantial use taxFor an ordinary civilian’s vehicle purchased in a foreign country, Florida’s current procedure calls for 6% plus the local discretionary surtax, calculated on the greater of the outstanding lien or fair market value on entry; foreign sales tax receives no credit. The six-month exemption for property used in another U.S. state does not protect a foreign-country vehicle (FLHSMV TL-08).
Your work start can begin both clocksStarting Florida employment is one way you become a Florida resident for these motor-vehicle rules. FLHSMV gives you 10 days to insure, title and register the vehicle but 30 days to obtain the Florida license, so waiting for the license can make the registration late (FLHSMV New Resident).
Keep Florida insurance continuouslyA Florida-registered vehicle must maintain at least $10,000 of personal injury protection and $10,000 of property-damage liability throughout the registration period; an insurance lapse can jeopardize the registration (FLHSMV Insurance Requirements).

Próximos pasos

Follow these steps in order so that the federal import documents unlock Florida registration, which then helps complete Honda’s warranty file.

Before moving, if still possible

Open the Honda letter and warranty cases

Call American Honda Automobile Customer Relations at 1-800-999-1009 for the VIN-specific and case-specific warranty-transfer instructions. Request the separate recall-clearance letter from Honda Canada at 1-888-946-6329. Honda’s page says to start before moving but also lists a current U.S. registration, so obtain American Honda’s exact fax/mail destination and sequence for your case rather than treating the warranty as automatic (Honda Canada Vehicle Movement FAQ).

Requisitos

17-digit VIN
Current Canadian driver license
Canadian bill of sale showing VIN, selling dealer and engine number
Permanent Canadian registration—not temporary registration

At the border or port

Import the CR-V permanently through CBP

File EPA Form 3520-1 and DOT Form HS-7 with U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Use only if the letter satisfies NHTSA’s Canadian-vehicle rule; if it does not, use the Box 3 route. Select EPA code B only for an unmodified vehicle bearing a U.S. EPA label, or code EE with the required Canadian/identical-vehicle proof. Keep the completed declarations and obtain showing the VIN (CBP; NHTSA; EPA Form 3520-1).

Requisitos

Out-of-country title or ownership document
American Honda compliance letter
EPA emissions-label or Canadian-market proof
EPA Form 3520-1
DOT Form HS-7
VIN and bill of sale

Before Florida registration

Buy Florida automobile insurance

Obtain Florida coverage from an insurer licensed in Florida. The policy must be active when you register and maintained throughout the registration period; the statutory minimums are $10,000 in each category (FLHSMV Insurance Requirements).

Requisitos

CR-V VIN
Current Florida residential and mailing addresses
At least $10,000 PIP coverage
At least $10,000 PDL coverage

Within 10 days after establishing Florida residency

Title and register the imported CR-V

Apply in person at a Florida motor-vehicle service center, county tax collector or license-plate agency. A Florida license is not a prerequisite: FLHSMV accepts a valid Canadian license or a qualifying unexpired passport; a foreign passport must carry the federal lawful-presence evidence described in TL-01. HSMV 82040 requires both a residential street address and mailing address, so use where you actually live now. The first-registration fee is $225 if you have no transferable Florida plate; the published base title fee is $77.25 for original-new or $85.25 for original-used, before plate/service charges. Also expect 6% plus county surtax on the greater of the lien balance or fair market value at entry, with no credit for foreign tax (FLHSMV TL-01, TL-08 and TL-10). If a lienholder holds the title, request its transfer; if it refuses, obtain that refusal on letterhead for FLHSMV’s registration procedure.

Requisitos

Signed HSMV 82040
Out-of-country title
Certified, signed and notarized translation if the ownership document is not English
CBP Form 7501 containing the VIN
HS-7 containing the VIN
Manufacturer confirmation letter for Box 2B, or bond letter and RI contract for Box 3
VIN inspection on HSMV 82040 or HSMV 82042
Proof of Florida insurance
Accepted identity document, such as a Canadian license or qualifying passport
Bill of sale and lien information

As soon as Florida registration is issued

Submit the completed Honda warranty packet

Use the fax or mailing destination American Honda assigns to your case. Honda Canada says American Honda will provide coverage for the applicable warranty period when the cross-border policy applies, but its published page requires case-specific confirmation at 1-800-999-1009 (Honda Canada Vehicle Movement FAQ).

Requisitos

Canadian driver license copy
Canadian bill of sale with VIN, dealer and engine number
Permanent Canadian registration copy
New Florida/U.S. registration copy
American Honda case and submission instructions

Within 30 days after starting Florida employment

Obtain the Florida Class E driver license

Apply in person at an office providing driver-license services. A permanent home is not required, but Florida requires proof of your current residential address. If documents are not in your name, use HSMV 71120 : your host provides one listed household document and one listed supporting document, and appears with you or signs before a notary. The original Class E fee is $48; a tax-collector office may add a $6.25 service fee. FLHSMV administers a vision test and says written and road tests may be waived; if required, their published fees are $10 and $20 respectively (FLHSMV Non-Immigrant Requirements; HSMV 71120; FLHSMV Fees).

Requisitos

Passport with entry stamp and unexpired I-94 showing TN classification
Original Social Security card, W-2, paycheck stub or qualifying 1099 showing the complete SSN
Two different documents showing your Florida residential address, or HSMV 71120 with the host’s documents
Current foreign driver license

I imported last January; I showed up at the border, had them look over the paperwork, paid the tax (car was built in Mexico pre-CUSMA, so I think it was like $450 in duty), and then drove home.
