Call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213; representatives answer from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. local time, Monday through Friday.
“I received my EAD recently but haven't received my SSN card yet. Which Social Security Administration number should I call to check on it, since my lawyer advised against going to the office in person due to the risk of being detained by ICE?”
Resumen
You can begin by phone—SSA expressly says it can often help by phone and save you a trip. If fewer than 14 days have passed since your EAD arrived, note day 14; if 14 days have passed, call now.
Your next route depends on whether you requested an SSN when you filed Form I-765.
If the card is still missing 14 days after you received the EAD, call SSA. Staff can search for the pending application using the on your EAD and confirm the mailing address. (SSA EBE page; POMS RM 10205.700, effective October 10, 2024.)
There is no automatic I-765 SSN request to track. The specific USCIS/SSA flyer says you must apply at an SSA office after receiving Form I-766; Form SS-5 is free, and SSA requires current unexpired immigration and identity evidence. SSA requires an appointment for in-person help, so resolve the safety issue with your lawyer before scheduling or attending. (USCIS/SSA EBE Flyer; Form SS-5; SSA Contact.)
Start with the phone call; do not make an unplanned office visit contrary to your lawyer’s advice.

These steps let you check the missing card by phone first and preserve your lawyer’s warning about an office visit.
Before calling
Confirm whether you requested an SSN on Form I-765
If you selected the SSN request on Form I-765, SSA should have received an automatic application. If you are unsure, still call: POMS directs staff to search for a pending application using the shown on the EAD.
Requisitos
If you requested the SSN
Count 14 days from EAD delivery
SSA’s current EBE page says the SSN card should arrive no later than 14 days after the EAD and says to contact SSA if it does not. If day 14 has passed, call now; if not, mark that date.
Requisitos
At day 14, or now if later
Call SSA and ask it to locate the application
Call 1-800-772-1213 between 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. local time, Monday through Friday. Say: “I requested an SSN on Form I-765, received my EAD on [date], and my SSN card has not arrived. Please search using the A-number on my EAD and confirm my mailing address.” If you are deaf or hard of hearing and use TTY, call 1-800-325-0778.
Requisitos
During the call
Follow the result without making an unplanned visit
If SSA’s record shows processing less than 7 business days earlier, staff confirm the address and advise that the card should arrive shortly. If processing was more than 7 business days earlier or the address changed, POMS directs a replacement-card application and evidence; if no pending application exists, SSA starts a new application and requests evidence. If SSA cannot verify you by phone or says in-person help is needed, an appointment is required—take that response to your lawyer before scheduling or attending.
Requisitos
Only if there was no I-765 SSN request
Use Form SS-5 if no SSN was requested
Form SS-5 is available at https://www.ssa.gov/forms/ss-5.pdf and the fee is $0. The specific USCIS/SSA I-765 flyer says someone who did not request the SSN on Form I-765 must apply at an SSA office after receiving the EAD; SSA requires an appointment for in-person help. Because your lawyer warned you against going in person, address that risk with your lawyer before scheduling or attending.
