No—having your truthful mailing address printed on your California REAL ID is allowed and does not by itself create an immigration problem.

“I just got my green card and am renewing my California driver's license to a Real ID. My mailing address is different from my home address, and it looks like they print the mailing address on the ID. Is it an issue for immigration or other purposes to have my mailing address on my Real ID?”

Resumen

California expressly separates your mailing and residence addresses, and its DMV says a license includes the mailing address. Federal REAL ID rules allow that state-authorized alternative while requiring your actual residence to be verified separately.

What you need to do depends on whether either address has actually changed since your records were last updated.

Neither address changedno problem

Keep both addresses as entered. California’s application collects both mailing and residence addresses, California law permits the license to show either one, and the federal REAL ID rule permits a state-authorized alternative to the address. The mailing address printed on the card does not by itself trigger a USCIS address-change filing (California Vehicle Code §§ 12800(a)(1), 12811(a); 6 CFR 37.17(f)(1)).

You moved or changed mailing addressupdate records

If you moved home, update both DMV and USCIS within 10 days. If only your mailing address changed, California still requires a DMV update within 10 days; if you also have a pending USCIS request, USCIS says to report address changes as soon as possible (California Vehicle Code § 14600(a); USCIS Address Change).

A different mailing address is not itself a defect; what matters is that the separate home and mailing fields are truthful and current.

Watch out for

Card address and home proof are separateThe mailing address printed on your card does not replace proof of your . Federal rules require at least two documents containing your name and principal residence; if your mailing address is a P.O. Box, California DMV also requires physical-address proof and a residency document showing both addresses (6 CFR 37.11(f); California DMV REAL ID document list).
Address updates are separateIf your home moves, notify USCIS within 10 days. California separately requires notice to DMV within 10 days after you move or acquire a different mailing address; file with each agency, because USCIS says even a USPS update does not update USCIS (USCIS Address Change; California Vehicle Code § 14600(a)).
REAL ID is not work authorizationFor Form I-9, your Permanent Resident Card is a document establishing identity and employment authorization. A state driver’s license is a identity document, so the address printed on your REAL ID neither grants nor removes your right to work.

These steps keep your DMV and immigration records accurate while completing the REAL ID upgrade.

Before renewing

Confirm both DMV address fields

Enter the two addresses separately and truthfully in the California DL/ID application; state law does not require them to be identical. If either existing DMV address is outdated, submit the online change at https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/online-change-of-address-coa-system/ before renewing and allow up to three days for processing.

Update USCIS if you moved home

Use the USCIS online change-of-address service at https://www.uscis.gov/addresschange; USCIS says an online update meets the legal reporting requirement. A different address printed by DMV does not require this filing if you did not move, and a USPS change does not update USCIS.

At your DMV visit

Complete the REAL ID upgrade

Start at https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/driver-licenses-identification-cards/real-id/, upload the identity and residency documents, save the confirmation code, and finish at a California DMV office with the originals. If your mailing address is a P.O. Box, bring residency evidence displaying both the P.O. Box and physical address.

Requisitos

Valid, unexpired Permanent Resident Card
Two different residency documents
Original versions of documents uploaded online
Online application confirmation code

After issuance

Use each card for its proper purpose

Use the REAL ID for covered federal identification purposes such as domestic air travel and access to certain federal facilities. For Form I-9, your Green Card is the List A document establishing identity and employment authorization; the driver’s license is only a List B identity document.
