Yes, $250,000 in cash salary can support your family of four in Seattle, but comfort depends especially on two childcare bills and the startup’s health coverage.

“I have US work authorization and was offered $250k/year at a Seattle startup. I'm considering moving from Europe with my partner and two toddlers. Is $250k comfortable for a family of four in Seattle after taxes, healthcare, and childcare, and what should I know before uprooting my family?”

Resumen

That is enough income to make a family move plausible, not a promise of a particular lifestyle: two childcare places and your actual employer health plan are the biggest missing numbers. You can test the offer against real commitments before relocating rather than deciding from the headline salary.

Your partner’s route is a separate decision from whether the salary covers Seattle living costs.

Married, with an eligible dependent categoryif eligible

If you hold a qualifying principal status such as L-1, an eligible spouse and unmarried children under 21 can seek L-2 admission. An L-2 spouse is authorized to work through that status; by contrast, an H-4 spouse can request work authorization only under the specified H-1B conditions and must obtain the authorization first. These examples are not a finding that your present authorization is L-1 or H-1B. [457.6-7] [457.32-33] [454.14-19]

Unmarried cohabiting partner on a visitor routeno work

If you hold long-term nonimmigrant status and your partner is not eligible for , State Department guidance recognizes B-2 for a cohabiting household member. It is a visitor classification, not permission to work; admission and any extension still require the applicable eligibility decisions. [573.155-160] [572.12] [678.0]

Assume your work authorization covers everyonenot automatic

Your individual permission to work does not itself establish your partner’s dependent classification or right to work. Even among eligible spouses, L-2 and H-4 have different employment rules. [457.32-33] [454.14-19]

Your stated work authorization does not identify which, if any, family-dependent category applies.

Watch out for

Your work permission does not settle your family’s entryThe route for your partner and children depends on your actual immigration category and whether you are married. For example, L-2 covers an L worker’s spouse and unmarried children under 21; an unmarried cohabiting partner may instead qualify for B-2 in a limited situation, but B-2 does not permit work. Do not treat your own work authorization as permission for all four of you to move. [457.6-7] [573.155-157] [678.0]
A move-year paycheck is not the annual exampleThe estimate below assumes a full year of $250,000 wages and a married joint U.S. resident return. A late-2026 arrival, an unmarried couple, or European income can change the return: the IRS has a day-counting residence test, and a qualifying election to file jointly with a nonresident spouse brings both spouses’ worldwide income into that return. [455.100-106] [453.100] [453.108-109]
Do not count the children’s tax credit automaticallyThe modeled higher take-home amount assumes both toddlers meet the rules for the $2,200-per-child credit, including each child having a qualifying Social Security number. A child with an ITIN cannot receive that credit; a separate credit of up to $500 for an otherwise eligible dependent may be possible instead. [189.114] [189.123] [580.102-103] [694.9-13]
A 2026 Washington payroll exemption may applyThe budget conservatively includes the 0.58% WA Cares deduction. Since January 1, 2026, holders of nonimmigrant visas for temporary workers are automatically exempt unless they opt in in writing—about $121 more per month on $250,000 wages. An employment authorization document alone does not establish that you hold that visa category. [576.155] [576.456-457]
Childcare tax relief has conditionsIf the startup offers dependent-care benefits, the 2026 exclusion can reach $7,500, but for a married couple it generally cannot exceed either spouse’s earned income; student or incapacity exceptions exist. A highly compensated employee also faces plan nondiscrimination rules, so do not subtract $7,500 from your childcare bill as if it were a guaranteed reimbursement. [201.1] [201.3] [201.7] [201.21-22]
Family health coverage might not begin on day oneObtain the actual plan’s , family eligibility, your premium and effective date before moving. An otherwise eligible employee’s group-plan waiting period cannot exceed 90 days, but that does not promise immediate coverage or establish that an unmarried partner is covered. [459.21-24] [462.42]

Before booking travel

Identify the entry and work route for all four of you

Match your authorization category to each person’s proposed admission category. For an L-1 principal, USCIS describes L-2 for the spouse and unmarried children under 21; if unmarried and the principal has long-term nonimmigrant status, State Department guidance recognizes a possible B-2 cohabiting-partner route, which does not allow employment. An H-4 spouse’s employment instead requires eligibility and Form I-765 authorization. Your category is not stated, so a single correct application or visa fee for this family cannot honestly be specified. [457.6-7] [573.155-157] [678.0] [454.14-19]

Before accepting

Get the startup’s family health offer in writing

Request the plan’s and written monthly employee premium, deductible, out-of-pocket exposure, coverage start date and eligibility for your partner and children. Job-based plans must provide the summary; an otherwise eligible worker can face a waiting period of up to 90 days. The $571 monthly premium in the example is a 2025 national average, not this startup’s quote. [459.21-24] [462.42] [452.147]

As a historical starting point, the 2024 King County medians were $2,053 monthly per toddler in a center or $1,516 in family child care; HUD’s FY2026 regional three-bedroom fair market rent was $3,272, not a promise of an available Seattle home. If a toddler reaches age 3 or 4 by August 31, Seattle’s preschool program becomes an age-based possibility, with tuition depending on the program rules. Before uprooting

Build a separate first-year tax and childcare budget

For a full 2026 year, $250,000 of one spouse’s wages, married-joint resident filing and the standard deduction, federal income tax is about $37,468 before child credits or $33,068 if both children qualify for the $2,200 credit. Subtracting employee Social Security, Medicare, Washington paid leave and the conservatively included WA Cares contribution leaves about $16,211–$16,577 monthly before health premiums; subtract a $571 premium, $4,106 for two center-care places and $3,272 rent to get about $8,262–$8,629 before food, utilities, transport, medical bills, savings and moving costs. These are annualized 2026 illustrations—not your arrival-year tax return or a quote for the startup’s benefits. If both spouses earn income and the employer offers it, the 2026 dependent-care exclusion may reach $7,500, subject to its other conditions. Moving to Seattle with an infant and toddler

u/zfarr/AskSeattle18 abr 2026

Madison Park/Madison Valley is very family friendly, safe, and close to First Hill. Can’t speak to daycare because I haven’t needed one but I know a few people who use daycares downtown and had an easy time getting in. This is where I live with one kid and another on the way, for reference!
Normandy Park is wonderful, safe, and family friendly. They have their own dedicated police force which is ridiculous since it’s so small but nice as a resident. They have parks and grocery now that’s walkable. I lived there for years and the community was really kind and family friendly, great school too for elementary kids at Marvista.
