You do not need an opt-out button: because you answered “No” to U.S. citizenship, California’s electronic DMV process skips voter registration and does not send your information to the Secretary of State.
“I am a Green Card holder filling out the California DMV application online. I checked 'NO' to being a US citizen, so the system didn't give me the option to decline voter registration. How do I make sure I don't accidentally get registered to vote?”
Resumen
The absent decline button is what California’s electronic process predicts when you do not say you are eligible to vote. You can confirm the outcome through the state’s status lookup after your DMV transaction.
Your next action depends on whether a voter-registration record appears after you finish the DMV transaction.
Continue your DMV application with “No” as your truthful citizenship answer. Under California’s electronic procedure, an applicant who does not answer “Yes” to the citizenship and other eligibility questions is not shown the voter-registration section, and no customer data is transmitted to the Secretary of State. [California Secretary of State, NVRA Manual ch. 2, § B](https://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/voter-registration/nvra/laws-standards/nvra-manual/chap-2).
Use the [California Voter Registration Cancellation Request Form](https://elections.cdn.sos.ca.gov/pdfs/cancellation-request-form.pdf), sign and date it, and submit it to your [county elections office](https://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/voting-resources/county-elections-offices). This is the corrective route if a record appears despite your “No” answer. [California Secretary of State, cancellation instructions](https://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/voter-registration).
Answering “No” to citizenship is the relevant safeguard; an opt-out choice is shown to applicants who indicate they are eligible to vote.

Watch out for
Próximos pasos
Keep your citizenship answer accurate, then confirm the result and correct a record only if one appears.
While completing your DMV application
Keep “No” as your citizenship answer
Continue the California DMV driver-license or ID application with your truthful “No” answer. Do not change it to “Yes” to reach an opt-out screen: the Secretary of State’s electronic procedure says a response other than “Yes” skips the voter-registration portion and sends no customer data to its office. [Official procedure](https://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/voter-registration/nvra/laws-standards/nvra-manual/chap-2).
After the DMV transaction
Look for a voter record after your DMV transaction
Go directly to California’s [My Voter Status](https://voterstatus.sos.ca.gov/) lookup and enter your name, date of birth, and identifying number. This is a status lookup, not a voter-registration application. If you have neither identifying number, the lookup directs you to the Secretary of State at (800) 345-8683 or elections@sos.ca.gov. [Status lookup](https://voterstatus.sos.ca.gov/).
Requisitos
Only if a voter record appears
Cancel a registration if the lookup shows one
Complete the [California Voter Registration Cancellation Request Form](https://elections.cdn.sos.ca.gov/pdfs/cancellation-request-form.pdf), sign and date it, and send it to your [county elections office](https://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/voting-resources/county-elections-offices). The county directory provides the office for your county; the Secretary of State’s voter hotline, (800) 345-VOTE (8683), can also give you its contact information. Keep a copy and do not vote.
