You do not have to be physically present under federal law, but you can open remotely only if you meet HSBC Premier’s country and financial rules or SDFCU’s strict family-membership rule.

“Do I need to be physically present in the US to set up a checking account, or are there any US banks where I can open one remotely as a Non-Resident Alien (NRA)?”

Resumen

You have at least one true U.S.-bank route and one credit-union route that can work without traveling, but both are conditional. If neither fits, you can prepare for the documented branch process rather than submitting online applications that exclude your profile.

Your status does not automatically force an in-person visit; your current country, financial profile, and family connection determine which remote route is available.

HSBC Premier checking from abroadremote if eligible

You may apply online for a sole HSBC Bank USA Premier checking account while located in Argentina, Armenia, Australia, Belgium, Bermuda, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Egypt, France, Germany, Greece, Guernsey, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Isle of Man, Israel, Japan, Jersey, Kenya, Kuwait, Lebanon, Macau, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, Uruguay, or Venezuela. You must be at least 18, be able to complete HSBC’s valid tax certificate if you lack an SSN, and meet one Premier financial criterion. The direct online route is for a sole account, and the country list is expressly subject to change. (HSBC Account Opening FAQs; HSBC Premier product page.)

SDFCU Basic Checkingfamily route

SDFCU is a U.S. federal credit union rather than a bank, but it accepts qualifying members abroad and allows online applications. As a non-U.S. citizen/non-permanent resident, you need a U.S.-citizen family member who qualified through an existing . Prepare your home address, government ID, country of origin, , , and proof of the relationship; no SSN is required. Basic Checking has no minimum balance or monthly fee, and SDFCU provides the $1 membership-share deposit. (SDFCU International Families disclosure; Membership FAQs; Basic Checking page.)

Bank of America branch processin person

Bank of America’s published NRA route is not remote: it requires a physical foreign address plus a U.S. mailing address, two unexpired IDs, a tax identification number if applicable, and an appointment with an associate at a U.S. financial center. This remains an in-person fallback after you can travel and have the required U.S. mailing address. (Bank of America International Professional Account Guide.)

An NRA is an IRS tax classification, while banks separately apply their own citizenship, residence, location, address, and identity rules; approval is never automatic.

Watch out for

Federal permission is not bank approvalFederal rules expressly contemplate accounts opened without an in-person appearance and let a non-U.S. person identify themselves with a passport or another listed government ID instead of a U.S. tax number. But each institution must use risk-based identity procedures, so it may demand more documents or decline the application. (31 CFR 1020.220(a)(2)(i)(A)(4)(ii), (a)(2)(ii)(B)(2).)
HSBC is a premium accountThe verified HSBC remote option is Premier checking. You must satisfy at least one Premier criterion—$100,000 in HSBC deposits/investments, $5,000 in monthly direct deposits, a qualifying HSBC U.S. mortgage, or HSBC Private Bank status—and the monthly fee is $50 if you stop meeting the criteria; the minimum opening deposit itself is $0. (HSBC Premier product page; HSBC Premier Terms & Charges Disclosure, correct as of September 9, 2026.)
The general SDFCU shortcut does not applyAlthough SDFCU generally mentions American Consumer Council membership, its rule for a non-U.S. citizen who is not a permanent resident is stricter: you need a U.S.-citizen family member who qualified through a , excluding the American Consumer Council. If SDFCU asks for additional documents, its FAQ gives you up to 14 days to provide them. (SDFCU International Families disclosure; SDFCU Membership FAQs.)

Follow the branch matching your country, finances, and family eligibility so you do not submit an application that cannot be approved under the institution’s published rules.

Before collecting documents

Choose the route you qualify for

Use HSBC only if you are currently in one of the listed countries and can meet a Premier criterion: $100,000 in HSBC deposits/investments, $5,000 in monthly direct deposits, an HSBC U.S. residential mortgage serviced by HSBC, or HSBC Private Bank status. Use SDFCU only if your U.S.-citizen family member qualified through a Select Employee Group other than the American Consumer Council.

Before starting online

Prepare the route-specific documents

For HSBC, complete the valid tax certificate presented in the application if you do not have an SSN. For SDFCU, no SSN is required for this foreign-national route, but the FTIN, Form W-8BEN, and relationship evidence are required by its international-family page.

Requisitos

HSBC: passport valid for at least six months or SSN
HSBC: bank statement or utility bill showing permanent address
HSBC: personal, employment, income, and tax details
SDFCU: home address and government ID
SDFCU: FTIN, country of origin, and Form W-8BEN
SDFCU: proof of relationship to the qualifying member

When your documents are ready

Submit the remote application

For HSBC, apply for Premier checking at https://www.us.hsbc.com/checking-accounts/products/premier; the minimum opening deposit is $0, but the account costs $50 per month if you do not maintain a waiver criterion. For SDFCU, open https://www.sdfcu.org/membership-international-families and select “Join SDFCU Today”; membership begins with a share-savings account for which SDFCU supplies the required $1, then select Basic Checking, which has no minimum balance or monthly fee.

Requisitos

An individual account if applying directly online with HSBC
The qualifying family member’s SDFCU information if using SDFCU

Within 14 days if requested

Answer any SDFCU document request

Upload the requested material through the saved online application within SDFCU’s stated 14-day period. You can monitor the submitted application’s status online.

Requisitos

Any additional identity or relationship document named in SDFCU’s request

If neither remote route fits

Use the in-person fallback after arrival

Schedule a Bank of America financial-center appointment at https://locators.bankofamerica.com and bring the required documents. Its published NRA process requires meeting an associate at the financial center, so it is not a remote-opening option.

Requisitos

Physical foreign address
U.S. mailing address
Two unexpired IDs
Tax identification number, if applicable

The answer comes from Treasury’s current customer-identification regulation, IRS guidance, and the official account terms of HSBC Bank USA, SDFCU, and Bank of America.

31 CFR 1020.220

Federal identity rules allow remote account opening and recognize a passport or other listed government ID for a non-U.S. person, but verification remains risk-based.

31 CFR 1020.220

(a)(2)(i)(A)(4)(ii); (a)(2)(ii)(B)(2)

( ii ) For a non-U.S. person, one or more of the following: A taxpayer identification number; passport number and country of issuance; alien identification card number; or number and country of issuance of any other government-issued document evidencing nationality or residence and bearing a photograph or similar safeguard. ( 2 ) The bank's non-documentary procedures must address situations where an individual is unable to present an unexpired government-issued identification document that bears a photograph or similar safeguard; the bank is not familiar with the documents presented; the account is opened without obtaining documents; the customer opens the account without appearing in person at the bank; and where the bank is otherwise presented with circumstances that increase the risk that the bank will be unable to verify the true identity of a customer through documents.
