You do not need to take any extra steps right now. Because you asked for the number on your form, USCIS sends your data straight to Social Security to issue the card.
When USCIS approves your Form I-485, they send your information to the Social Security Administration through a system called {"term": "ebe", "text": "Enumeration Beyond Entry"}. Social Security then automatically assigns your number and mails the card to the address you put on your application.
The official rule gives them 14 days from the day you receive your physical green card. If that time passes and you still have an empty mailbox, it usually means the data transfer between the two agencies failed or got stuck.
If that happens, you must apply directly with Social Security. You can start the application online, but you have to go to a local office in person to show your original documents.

Wait 14 days
Count 14 days from the day you received your physical green card in the mail. Do not go to an office before this window closes, because the card is likely already on its way.
Gather your original documents
If the 14 days pass with no card, collect your original green card (Form I-551) and your original birth certificate. Social Security does not accept photocopies.
Visit a Social Security office
Go to your local office in person to apply. You can use their online service to start the request and make an appointment, but you must show your physical green card to a clerk to finish the process.
