I recently received my physical marriage-based green card. On my I-485, I checked 'Yes' to have the SSA issue me a Social Security card. How long does it usually take to receive the SSN card after getting the green card, and at what point should I go to a Social Security office?
Social Security will mail your card automatically. You should receive it no later than 14 days after you receive your physical green card in the mail. You only need to visit an office if it misses that 14-day window.
You do not need to take any extra steps right now. Because you asked for the number on your form, USCIS sends your data straight to Social Security to issue the card.
When USCIS approves your Form I-485, they send your information to the Social Security Administration through a system called {"term": "ebe", "text": "Enumeration Beyond Entry"}. Social Security then automatically assigns your number and mails the card to the address you put on your application.
The official rule gives them 14 days from the day you receive your physical green card. If that time passes and you still have an empty mailbox, it usually means the data transfer between the two agencies failed or got stuck.
If that happens, you must apply directly with Social Security. You can start the application online, but you have to go to a local office in person to show your original documents.
