My I-485 and I-130 just got approved, and I already asked for my Social Security number through USCIS right on the forms. Now I am stuck on one thing: will my Social Security card simply arrive in the mail, or do I still have to go to a Social Security office in person and apply for it? I just do not want to miss a step in all of this.
You most likely do not need to visit a Social Security office. You asked for the card on your green card application, so the approval itself tells Social Security to make your card and mail it to you.
You did the right thing by checking that box. Because you asked for the card on your Form I-485, US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) hands Social Security the details it needs the moment your green card is approved, and Social Security mails the card to the address on your application. The card a new green card holder gets has printed on it, which is the one you actually want. Social Security's own rule is to mail it within 14 days of your green card reaching you. If it does not arrive, one short walk-in visit settles it. That is the whole backup plan.
You are not the first to wonder if the card simply comes. Here are three recent green card holders who, like you, asked for the SSN on their I-485. If it would help, we can connect you with one of them.

Two numbers matter: what Social Security promises, and what people actually see. Plan around the second.
Expect it
About two to three weeks after your green card.
Social Security's public staff manual (the POMS, section RM 10205.700) says it mails the card within 14 days of your green card, with no work restriction on it, through a process called . In practice the handoff is not a perfect machine, so give it a little past that before you worry. Count from the day the green card reaches your mailbox, not from the approval notice.
Three to four weeks with no card: go in person.
This is where immigration practitioners land, not day 14. If it has been about three to four weeks, stop waiting. Book a Social Security appointment online first, since walk-in waits can run long right now, then go in with your and your unexpired passport. They can usually start your card the same day, and the physical card still mails to you. Find your office at https://www.ssa.gov/locator/. It is free.
If it stalls, it is usually the status check.
The common reason it lags: before printing, Social Security checks your new status against Homeland Security records through , and a freshly approved case takes a few days to appear there. Going in with your physical green card lets the clerk confirm you on the spot. One more cause worth ruling out is an unpaid USCIS Immigrant Fee, which can hold up both the green card and the number.
The surprising part, that a card can reach you without a single trip, is written into Social Security's own rules. Here they are, linked so you can read the source.
SSA · Enumeration Beyond Entry: If you request the card on Form I-485, you do not have to contact a Social Security office. After USCIS approves you, the card is mailed within 14 days of your green card.
Form I-485: Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status. If you apply for an SSN card using Form I-485, you do not have to contact a Social Security office to apply for an SSN card. If USCIS approves your application for LPR status, we will mail your SSN card or replacement card to the address listed on your application. You should receive your SSN card no later than 14 days after you receive your Permanent Resident Card/Form I-551/ “Green Card” from USCIS.
SSA Program Manual · RM 10205.700: Once USCIS approves the I-485, the data goes to Social Security, which automatically issues the card and mails it. For green card holders, the card carries no work-restriction legend.
RM 10205.700
Enumeration-Beyond-Entry (EBE). Once USCIS approves the application, USCIS electronically transmit the enumeration data to SSA via the EBE interface. After SSA receives the enumeration data via the EBE interface, the enumeration system automatically assigns an original SSN or issues a replacement SSN card, as appropriate. … SSN cards issued to Permanent Resident Status applicants and naturalized applicants will not have a legend. … SSA mails the card to the mailing address provided by the applicant on the USCIS application.
SSA · Social Security Numbers for Noncitizens (Pub. 05-10096): If you go in person, Social Security verifies your documents before mailing the card, which is why a fresh approval can take a little longer to clear.
When should I apply?. We will mail your SSN card as soon as we have all of your information and have verified your documents with the issuing offices. … we recommend you wait 10 days after arriving in the United States to apply for an SSN. This will make it easier for us to verify your DHS documents online.
A note. This is general guidance, not legal advice. Social Security's automatic step can lag for an individual case, so treat the in-person visit as your reliable backup, and confirm anything specific to you with your local Social Security office.
