“My passport has my full name 'John Doe' as my given name with no last name. My I-20 has it as my last name with no first name. My visa, school records, and bank accounts use 'FNU' as my first name and 'John Doe' as my last name. I just applied for an SSN in Ohio, and the SSA official said my card will just say 'John Doe' without 'FNU'. How will this name discrepancy between my SSN, visa, and I-20 affect my upcoming OPT application, and what should I do to fix it?”
Your I-20, visa, and expected SSN card are using three official display conventions for the same identity; the missing FNU on the SSN card is not an error. A clear I-765 name entry, disclosure of the FNU version, and one explanation letter should let USCIS connect the records, although USCIS can request more evidence if the packet does not explain them.
Your name treatment is settled, but the forms you must file depend on your latest I-94 admission, travel, and OPT filing date under the September 15, 2026 rule.
If you were admitted for D/S before September 15, 2026, are in the United States maintaining F-1 status on that date, and file I-765 before your permitted stay expires and by March 18, 2027, the transition exception says you do not need a separate application for that OPT period (2026 DHS final rule, 8 CFR 214.1(m)).
If you travel before filing and return with a fixed F-1 admission, DHS says to file both Form I-539 for an and Form I-765 for post-completion OPT (DHS Fixed-Admission Quick Facts, updated July 20, 2026).
If you need OPT beyond the transition end date or do not meet the March 18, 2027 exception, file Form I-539 before your authorized stay expires as well as the timely I-765. Current fees are $420 online or $470 on paper for I-539, plus the I-765 fee (Form G-1055, edition May 29, 2026).
Do not use this route. DOS uses FNU only as a visa-application placeholder; SEVIS forbids FNU in the Given Name field, USCIS puts a single name in Last Name, and SSA processes the card in the single name.
These status branches do not change the name answer: use John Doe in the last-name field and connect the FNU version through Other Names Used and an explanation.
These steps create a name-consistent OPT packet while preserving every filing deadline and the correct 2026 status route.
Before the OPT recommendation
Confirm the legal-name source and SEVIS layout
If John Doe is your only legal name, your current I-20 layout is already correct: Surname/Primary Name = John Doe and Given Name = blank; FNU must not be entered. Give the documents to your DSO, who can use Student Information > Edit > Update Personal Information and then Print I-20. If a birth certificate or legal name-change document establishes a different current legal name, use that document's name for I-765 and have the DSO update SEVIS before the recommendation.

Ask the DSO to recommend post-completion OPT
The DSO must enter the post-completion OPT recommendation in SEVIS and give you a signed, endorsed Form I-20. Do not file I-765 before that recommendation. Once it is entered, USCIS must receive I-765 within 30 days and no later than 60 days after your program end date.

Select category (c)(3)(B). Enter John Doe in Family Name/Last Name; do not invent a first name. Under Other Names Used, enter Family/Last = John Doe and Given/First = FNU because that display appears on your visa and other records. Upload the visa and a letter in Additional Information stating: 'My only legal name is JOHN DOE. My passport places JOHN DOE in the given-name field and has no surname. DHS single-name rules place the complete name in the last-name field; my visa uses FNU only as the Department of State placeholder; SSA issues the card in my single name. Please associate FNU JOHN DOE with JOHN DOE.' If your SSN is not yet known, do not guess; Form I-765 asks for it only if known.

If the D/S transition exception applies and you timely file by March 18, 2027, file I-765 only at https://www.uscis.gov/i-765: $470 online or $520 on paper. If you reenter with a fixed admission before filing, or need OPT beyond the transition exception, file I-539 before your authorized stay expires as well as the timely I-765; I-539 is $420 online or $470 on paper, with no separate biometrics fee listed in the May 29, 2026 fee schedule. For paper filings, USCIS currently accepts Form G-1450 card payment or Form G-1650 ACH payment rather than a personal check, money order, or cashier's check unless a payment exception applies.

SEVIS Name Standards
DHS requires the complete single name to appear as the SEVIS surname even when the passport's visual page labels it as a given name.
Single Names
Single names must be entered in the Surname field, regardless of whether they are listed as given or family names in the passport VIZ.
USCIS Policy Manual Vol. 1 Pt. E Ch. 5
USCIS treats a single legal name as the family name and may supply its own no-given-name notation.
Chapter 5, One-Word Names
For purposes of properly filing benefit requests, data entry in USCIS systems, and issuing secure documents such as Permanent Resident Cards or travel documents, when a benefit requestor has a single name, USCIS considers the single name as the family name. USCIS may insert No Name Given as the given name in this circumstance.
