Answered August 2026

No—a one-letter I-797 typo does not automatically make SAVE fail; it may require manual verification if the name in the DMV submission does not match the DHS record.

My H1B Change of Status was approved, but USCIS made a one-letter typo in my name on the I-797 approval notice. My attorney emailed Premium Processing but hasn't heard back in a month. What steps can be taken to get the corrected notice, and will this typo cause my SAVE verification to fail when I renew my driver's license?

Summary

This is manageable: USCIS has a formal typo-correction route, and SAVE has a required manual-review path when an instant match is not possible. The notice typo may delay a DMV renewal, but an initial mismatch is not a final SAVE-based denial.

Your correction route depends on whether the one-letter error is limited to the approval notice or also appears on the replacement I-94 attached to the I-797A.

Typo only on the noticestart now

Submit USCIS’s at https://egov.uscis.gov/e-request/typo using the I-129 receipt number, then have the employer/petitioner or attorney of record call the Premium Processing service center at 866-315-5718 with that receipt number.

Typo also on the I-94I-94 branch

In addition to the online typo request, Form I-102 is USCIS’s specific route to correct inaccurate information on a USCIS-issued I-94. Use edition 04/01/24, select Part 2, Item 1.f., attach the original I-94, a dated signed explanation, and evidence of the correct name; the current G-1055 fee schedule lists this USCIS-error category at $0.

In either branch, also open the online typographic-error request and use the Premium Processing contact line rather than waiting longer for the email alone.

Watch out for

The Premium clock is not a correction deadlinePremium Processing guarantees timely adjudicative action on the underlying case; USCIS does not say that its 15-business-day guarantee applies to reissuing a corrected notice after approval. Treat the unanswered email as follow-up, and open a formal now.
Check the replacement I-94 tooA change-of-status approval is generally issued on , which USCIS describes as a replacement Form I-94. If the typo also appears on that I-94, use the separate Form I-102 correction branch; if only the approval-notice text is wrong, do not file I-102 just to replace the notice.
An initial SAVE result is not a final denialIf SAVE requires—or you request—, the DMV must perform it and may not deny the application based on the initial SAVE response. Ask the DMV for the SAVE case number before leaving.
SAVE cannot correct the source recordSAVE checks information held in government databases but does not maintain or correct those records. A USCIS document or record error must be corrected through USCIS, even if the DMV has already opened a SAVE case.
Your state still controls the license decisionFederal REAL ID rules require states to verify lawful-status information through SAVE or another DHS-approved method, but SAVE itself does not decide license eligibility. Temporary licenses, document lists, renewal holds, and appeal timing depend on the unnamed state.

Next steps

These steps create a formal USCIS correction trail while preparing the DMV to complete SAVE verification without treating an initial mismatch as final.

Today

Compare the notice and attached I-94

Check every name field, including the replacement I-94 on the bottom of an I-797A. Save complete color copies before returning any original; the result decides whether you need only the notice-correction route or also Form I-102.

Requirements

Entire I-797 approval notice
Passport biographic page
Copy of the approved filing or other USCIS record showing the correct name

Do not wait for another Premium email

Submit the USCIS typographic-error request

Submit the at https://egov.uscis.gov/e-request/typo. State the incorrect spelling, the exact correct spelling, that USCIS—not the petition—introduced the error, and that you need a corrected approval notice; save the confirmation and service-request number.

Requirements

I-129 receipt number
A-Number, if applicable
Item containing the error
Filing date
Email address
Correct-name evidence

After submitting the online request

Call the Premium Processing service center

Have the H-1B employer/petitioner or attorney of record call 866-315-5718. Ask USCIS to link the online typo request and prior email to the approved I-129 and to issue the corrected I-797; USCIS specifically says Premium filers may call this service-center number and must have the receipt number ready.

Requirements

Form I-907 or I-129 receipt number
Attorney’s Form G-28, if the attorney calls
Typographic-error request number
Copy of the incorrect notice

Only after the applicable response window

Escalate a forwarded service request when overdue

Call the USCIS Contact Center at 800-375-5283 (TTY 800-767-1833), Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Eastern. If the Contact Center forwarded a service request to the processing center, USCIS states a 30-day response window, or 15 days for an expedited request; after that window, ask to have the inquiry elevated.

Requirements

Receipt number
Service-request number
Date USCIS forwarded the inquiry
Prior response, if any

Conditional: attached I-94 has the typo

File Form I-102 if the replacement I-94 is also wrong

Select Part 2, Item 1.f. and file the paper Form I-102 with the USCIS lockbox through https://www.uscis.gov/i-102. The current G-1055 schedule lists a replacement caused by USCIS error at $0; this form corrects the I-94, not merely the text of the approval notice.

Requirements

Form I-102 edition 04/01/24
Original incorrect I-94
Dated and signed error statement
Passport and filing evidence showing the correct name

At the renewal appointment

Give the DMV the newest immigration evidence

Ask the DMV to enter your name, date of birth, I-94 number, and I-797 receipt number exactly from the documents. If SAVE does not verify immediately or returns an unexpected response, request , ask the DMV to upload the most recent immigration documents, and obtain the SAVE verification case number.

Requirements

Passport with correct name
Most recently issued I-797A and I-94
Typographic-error request confirmation
Any corrected notice received before the appointment

While the DMV case is pending

Track the SAVE case

Use at https://www.uscis.gov/save/benefit-and-license-applicants/save-casecheck. Current USCIS guidance says additional verification takes approximately seven federal workdays as of August 2026; once CaseCheck says a response was returned, contact the DMV for its licensing decision.

Requirements

Date of birth
SAVE case number, I-94 number, A-Number, or I-797 receipt number

Only if the ordinary routes do not resolve it

Use the written-denial and Ombudsman safeguards if needed

If the DMV proposes denial based on SAVE, obtain its written notice and correction/appeal information; the agency must allow contact with the federal government to correct the information before a final decision. If USCIS remains unresolved after you contacted it within the last 90 days and gave it at least 60 days, submit DHS Form 7001 online at https://www.dhs.gov/case-assistance with the error proof and prior USCIS contacts.

Requirements

DMV written notice
SAVE case number and history
USCIS typo-request proof
Incorrect notice and correct-name evidence
Form G-28, if represented
