I failed my Massachusetts road test because of an issue with my friend's car's emergency brake. Does the RMV provide vehicles you can use for the test, or what are my options if I don't have another car to borrow?
The RMV does not provide vehicles for road tests. You are required to supply an acceptable vehicle yourself, but you do not have to own or borrow a private car. You can use a vehicle provided by a licensed driving school or a rental car.
You can still get your license without relying on your friend's car again. Booking through a driving school solves both the vehicle requirement and the {"term": "sponsor", "text": "sponsor"} requirement at the same time.
The RMV stopped using state-owned vehicles for road tests. You must supply a vehicle that passes the examiner's inspection.
Since your friend's car was rejected over the emergency brake, it helps to know the exact rule. The vehicle must have a parking brake the examiner can easily reach to make an emergency stop. If the brake is blocked by a center console or is too far away, the examiner will reject the car.
If you decide to rent a car instead of using a driving school, there is extra paperwork. You must show the examiner your rental agreement and a letter on the rental company's letterhead. This letter must explicitly authorize you and your sponsor to use the vehicle for a road test. You also still need to bring your own sponsor.
