How the DMV checks your status
When you apply, the DMV uses an online service called {"term":"save-system","text":"SAVE"} to confirm your immigration status.
Your board extension (the extra time added to your J-1 program) does not always sync to SAVE instantly. If the DMV clerk runs your name and the system does not immediately show your new end date, they will need to request an additional manual verification.
Also, be aware that some states require you to have at least six months left on your program to get a license. If your board extension is shorter than that, federal rules do not offer a way around the state's minimum time requirement.

Get your extended paperwork

Wait two federal business days
After your sponsor updates your record, wait at least two federal workdays before going to the DMV. This gives your new authorized stay time to sync to the SAVE system.

Ask for a manual review if needed
If the DMV clerk says the system does not show your extension, politely ask them or a supervisor to request an additional verification in SAVE. Ask them to give you the SAVE verification case number so you can track it.
Wait for the review to clear
Additional verification takes about nine federal workdays. Once it clears, you can return to the DMV to finish your renewal.
