I am on a J1 visa with a board extension. What documents do I need to renew my driver's license?
You can renew your driver's license using your extended Form DS-2019 and your most recent Form I-94. You do not need an unexpired visa stamp in your passport to prove your lawful presence.
You can cross the expired visa stamp off your worry list. As long as your program extension is active in the government's system, your extended paperwork is enough to keep you driving legally.
When you apply, the DMV uses an online service called {"term":"save-system","text":"SAVE"} to confirm your immigration status.
Your board extension (the extra time added to your J-1 program) does not always sync to SAVE instantly. If the DMV clerk runs your name and the system does not immediately show your new end date, they will need to request an additional manual verification.
Also, be aware that some states require you to have at least six months left on your program to get a license. If your board extension is shorter than that, federal rules do not offer a way around the state's minimum time requirement.
