Answered October 2026

If your I-797A includes a currently effective H-1B I-94, you can ask SSA to process your SSN application using that newer document and request additional DHS verification if its first check still shows F-2.

“I recently had my Change of Status from F2 to H1B approved (I-797), but when I went to apply for an SSN, they said they can't issue it unless my new status is reflected on their website. How does this system update work, and what should I do?”

Summary

An F-2 result in the first electronic check does not, by itself, settle what your newer approval says: SSA has steps to correct entered information and ask DHS for additional verification. The important distinction is between an approved H-1B change of status with an effective I-94 and approval of the employer’s petition alone.

The decisive details are whether your approval includes a new H-1B I-94 and whether its validity period has begun.

I-797A with an effective H-1B I-94apply now

Take the notice with its attached to SSA. SSA recognizes that USCIS may attach an I-94 to a change-of-status approval, lists H-1B as work-authorized, and verifies your current document through ; if the first response still shows F-2, its instructions provide for corrected data or . I-797A, but the H-1B dates have not begunwait for date

Use the attached and its stated dates when seeking a work-authorized SSN; an approval with a future validity period is not permission to work early, and F-2 itself is not work-authorized. [SSA POMS RM 10211.420](https://secure.ssa.gov/poms.nsf/lnx/0110211420); [RM 10211.260](https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/poms.nsf/lnx/0110211260).

I-797B or no new H-1B I-94not enough

A worker-petition approval alone is not proof of an approved in-country change to H-1B: USCIS describes as petition approval and as a replacement I-94. Have the petitioning employer establish whether USCIS also approved the change of status before treating yourself as H-1B for this SSN request. [USCIS, Form I-797: Types and Functions](https://www.uscis.gov/forms/filing-guidance/form-i-797-types-and-functions).

A paper approval does not replace SSA’s required verification with DHS before it assigns an SSN.

Watch out for

An approval notice may not include a status changeAn I-797B shows approval of a worker petition, not the replacement I-94 shown on an I-797A. If your notice has no new H-1B I-94, do not treat the petition approval alone as proof that your F-2 status changed; ask the petitioning employer to resolve what USCIS approved. [USCIS, Form I-797: Types and Functions](https://www.uscis.gov/forms/filing-guidance/form-i-797-types-and-functions).
The old arrival record can misleadCBP’s online I-94 service describes records of admissions and travel, while SSA expressly recognizes an I-94 attached to a USCIS change-of-status approval. Bring the I-94 attached to your newer I-797A rather than relying only on an older F-2 arrival record. [CBP I-94 service](https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/I94?vm=r); [SSA POMS RM 10211.420](https://secure.ssa.gov/poms.nsf/lnx/0110211420).
Approval is not an early work startRead the validity dates on your new document. SSA says the document’s validity period defines when a nonimmigrant may work; F-2 status itself does not authorize work. Do not start H-1B work before your authorization is effective. [SSA POMS RM 10211.420](https://secure.ssa.gov/poms.nsf/lnx/0110211420); [RM 10211.260](https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/poms.nsf/lnx/0110211260).
No SSN card is not the same as no work authorizationIf your H-1B employment authorization is already effective, SSA says an employee may work while an SSN application is being processed. Your employer still needs your number for wage reporting once you receive it; the pending SSN does not make F-2 work lawful. [SSA, Employer Responsibilities When Hiring Foreign Workers](https://www.ssa.gov/employer/hiring.htm); [SSA POMS RM 10211.260](https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/poms.nsf/lnx/0110211260).
An earlier SSN changes the requestIf SSA previously assigned you a number, give it to the office and ask for an update to your record and a replacement card if your card wording must change; a status change can call for a replacement rather than a first card. The employment-authorized nonimmigrant card is marked “VALID FOR WORK WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION.” [SSA POMS RM 10211.510](https://secure.ssa.gov/poms.nsf/lnx/0110211510).

Next steps

These actions establish what USCIS approved, put your newest document into SSA’s verification process, and address a mismatch if it persists.

Before returning to SSA

Read the approval notice and attached I-94

Find the notice type, the classification and validity dates, and whether an H-1B Form I-94 is attached. An I-797A supplies a replacement I-94; an I-797B describes petition approval. If there is no new H-1B I-94, have the petitioning employer resolve whether the change-of-status request was approved before using this as proof of H-1B status. [USCIS I-797 types](https://www.uscis.gov/forms/filing-guidance/form-i-797-types-and-functions); [SSA POMS RM 10211.420](https://secure.ssa.gov/poms.nsf/lnx/0110211420).

Requirements

Your full Form I-797 approval notice, including its bottom portion
Your unexpired foreign passport

When your H-1B authorization is effective

Start the free SSN application and attend SSA in person

Start at https://www.ssa.gov/number-card/request-number-first-time and self-schedule a visit to a Social Security office or Card Center to finish the application. The application costs $0. Bring at least two original or issuing-agency-certified documents proving age, identity, and current work-authorized status; Form SS-5 expressly lists the I-94 as immigration-status evidence. Tell SSA if you already have an SSN so it can address your existing record and card. [SSA, Foreign Workers and Social Security Numbers](https://www.ssa.gov/pubs/EN-05-10107.pdf); [Form SS-5](https://www.ssa.gov/forms/ss-5.pdf); [SSA POMS RM 10211.510](https://secure.ssa.gov/poms.nsf/lnx/0110211510).

Requirements

Current original I-797A with attached H-1B I-94, if issued
Unexpired foreign passport
Any SSN previously assigned to you, if applicable

At the SSA visit

Ask SSA to verify the newer I-94, not just the old F-2 result

Ask the employee to enter your SSN application with the new document and run the initial check. If it does not verify, ask SSA to correct any incorrectly entered details and rerun it, or submit through its SSN application system. SSA’s instructions say its office must pull a returned additional-verification response into the pending application; a response does not appear there automatically. [SSA POMS RM 10213.095](https://secure.ssa.gov/poms.nsf/lnx/0110213095).

Requirements

The new I-94 number and approval notice
Your name and date of birth as printed on your documents

If SSA requests additional verification

Track the verification and address a real record error

Use https://save.uscis.gov/casecheck/ to see whether the SAVE request is pending or a response has gone back to SSA; then ask the SSA office to retrieve that response. USCIS reported approximately five federal workdays for additional verification as of September 2026, but SSA warns difficult document checks can take several weeks. If the USCIS-issued notice or underlying USCIS record is wrong, contact the issuing agency through the USCIS Contact Center at 800-375-5283; SAVE itself cannot correct records. [USCIS CaseCheck](https://www.uscis.gov/save/benefit-and-license-applicants/save-casecheck); [SAVE response times](https://www.uscis.gov/save/about-save/save-verification-response-time); [USCIS records guidance](https://www.uscis.gov/sites/default/files/document/fact-sheets/Records-Fast-Facts-for-Benefi-Applicants.pdf); [USCIS Contact Center](https://www.uscis.gov/contactcenter).

Requirements

Your date of birth
The new I-94 number, I-797 receipt number, or SAVE case number used for the request
