Answered September 2026

You should receive an unrestricted replacement SSN card automatically; do not visit SSA now—contact it only if no card arrives within 14 days after your Green Card.

“I recently got my Green Card approved and am waiting for it in the mail. My lawyer checked the box to automatically notify the Social Security office, but I read USCIS paused this notification. Will I receive my new unrestricted SSN card automatically, or do I need to go to the SSA office to update my status myself?”

Summary

The detailed pause report expressly said Form I-485 permanent-residence cases continued, and SSA’s current official instructions still direct automatic mailing. If the mailing fails, SSA can search the EBE record and take a replacement application.

What you do depends on whether the replacement card arrives within 14 days after your Green Card.

Wait for automatic mailingwait first

Because the SSA section was completed on your approved Form I-485, USCIS sends the necessary data and SSA automatically issues and mails the replacement card. Your permanent-resident evidence qualifies you for an , meaning one without a restrictive legend (SSA EBE page; SSA POMS RM 10205.700(B) and RM 10211.025(A)).

Use the SSA fallbackafter 14 days

If no card arrives by 14 days after Green Card delivery, contact SSA. Staff should search for the EBE record using your existing SSN or A-Number, resolve a pending record, or take a replacement-card application if necessary (SSA POMS RM 10205.700(C)–(E)).

The reported March 2025 pause concerned SSA’s program, but the detailed pause report expressly excluded Form I-485 permanent-residence cases; current SSA instructions still confirm your automatic route.

Watch out for

The pause reports were inconsistentTwo June 2025 reports described the pause differently: one broadly warned that I-485 requesters might not receive cards, while the more specific report said SSA continued processing SSN requests for people granted permanent residence through Form I-485. For your case, SSA’s own current EBE page and POMS control, and both still direct automatic I-485 processing (SSA POMS RM 10205.700; SSA EBE page).
Count from Green Card deliveryThe 14-day waiting period starts when you receive the physical Green Card—not on the I-485 approval date (SSA EBE page; SSA POMS RM 10205.700(C)).
An approval notice alone is insufficientIf you need the fallback SSA process, Form I-797 by itself is not acceptable proof of immigration status. Bring your original Form I-551; SSA also recognizes specified temporary I-551 evidence (SSA POMS RM 10211.025(B)–(C)).
Your I-485 address mattersSSA mails the automatic card to the address on your USCIS application. If that address has changed, tell SSA your current address when you contact it; POMS instructs staff to take a replacement-card application when the address changed (SSA POMS RM 10205.700(B), (D)).

Next steps

Follow these steps to allow the automatic process to work and use SSA’s fallback only if needed.

Do not visit SSA yet

Wait for your Green Card and the 14-day SSN window

Receive your Permanent Resident Card (Form I-551), then allow 14 days for the SSA card. USCIS sends the approved I-485 data through EBE, and SSA mails the replacement to the address on the application; no separate form or fee is due now (SSA EBE page; SSA POMS RM 10205.700(B)).

Requirements

Approved Form I-485 included the SSN-card request
Mail access at the address listed on your USCIS application

14 days after Green Card delivery

Call SSA if the card does not arrive

Call SSA at +1 800-772-1213 and say: “I requested a replacement SSN card through Form I-485 and need my immigration status updated.” SSA staff can verify your identity and search by your SSN or A-Number; if no pending EBE record exists, they can start a replacement application (SSA POMS RM 10205.700(C)–(E); SSA status-update page).

Requirements

Permanent Resident Card (Form I-551)
Existing SSN, if known
Current mailing address
Name, date and place of birth, parents’ names, and mother’s maiden name for telephone identity verification

If SSA cannot finish by phone

Attend an SSA appointment only if required

Make an appointment through the SSA Field Office Locator at https://secure.ssa.gov/ICON/main.jsp. Bring the original Green Card—not only Form I-797 or an ordinary photocopy. The application fee is $0; after SSA completes the request, it says the replacement card arrives by mail in 5 to 10 business days (Form SS-5; SSA POMS RM 10211.025; SSA replacement-card page).

Requirements

Appointment with the local SSA office
Original, unexpired Form I-551
Existing SSN, if known
Current mailing address

Unable to update SS card after green card

u/idrinkenemasr/immigrationFeb 4, 2026

In my experience I had to go myself in person. Some people told me a new ssn would be delivered shortly after my green card was delivered but it never happened. I would keep insisting and taking all documents such as approval letter, passport, green card, drivers licence etc

The answer comes from SSA’s EBE webpage, Program Operations Manual System, Form SS-5, and two June 2025 reports used only to explain the conflicting pause information.

SSA says an I-485 requester does not initially need an SSA visit and should receive an original or replacement card within 14 days after receiving the Green Card.

If you apply for an SSN card using Form I-485, you do not have to contact a Social Security office to apply for an SSN card. If USCIS approves your application for LPR status, we will mail your SSN card or replacement card to the address listed on your application. You should receive your SSN card no later than 14 days after you receive your Permanent Resident Card/Form I-551/ “Green Card” from USCIS.
