Answered October 2026

Yes—you can start SSA’s online process and arrange an in-person visit now, but tell SSA about any SSN request on your I-765 before it opens a new application.

“I recently got my C09 EAD approved and received the card. My lawyer advised waiting two weeks for an automatic SSN card, but I read the automatic generation program was canceled. My information hasn't shown up on SAVE yet. Should I wait, or apply online and schedule an in-person appointment to get my SSN ASAP?”

Summary

You do not need a visible SAVE CaseCheck result before approaching SSA. The practical safeguard is to have SSA check for a number or pending request first, so moving promptly does not mean asking for a second number.

The right SSA request depends on whether you already have an SSN and whether your I-765 asked for one.

You requested an SSN on I-765Check first

Start the [SSA online process](https://www.ssa.gov/number-card) and arrange a visit, but say that your I-765 already requested an SSN. Ask SSA to search for an assigned number or pending application before opening another one. SSA expressly permits I-765 applicants to use its online service and make an appointment, and its staff instructions explain the record search. [SSA EBE guidance](https://www.ssa.gov/ssnvisa/ebe.html); [SSA POMS RM 10205.700](https://secure.ssa.gov/poms.nsf/lnx/0110205700).

You did not request one and never had oneApply now

Start an original SSN-card request at [ssa.gov/number-card](https://www.ssa.gov/number-card), then take your original documents to SSA to finish it. SSA’s first-card instructions require evidence of age, identity, and current lawful work-authorized status; they identify a foreign passport and current immigration document, including Form I-766. [SSA Form SS-5 instructions](https://www.ssa.gov/forms/ss-5.pdf).

You already had an SSNSame number

Do not apply for a different number. Tell SSA your existing number if known and ask it to check whether a card is being mailed or whether you need a replacement; SSA’s instructions provide for a replacement application when the address changed or the assigned card has not arrived after the specified processing interval. [SSA POMS RM 10205.700](https://secure.ssa.gov/poms.nsf/lnx/0110205700).

In every case, you can start with SSA now; completing an online request may still require an office visit.

Watch out for

The two-week promise is uncertainSSA’s published guidance says a card requested through Form I-765 should arrive within 14 days of receiving the , not 14 days after approval. But a congressional report dated April 17, 2025, says SSA paused significant parts of that program in March 2025. The report does not establish whether the pause remains in effect today, so do not make the automatic card your only plan. [SSA guidance](https://www.ssa.gov/ssnvisa/ebe.html); [congressional report](https://oversightdemocrats.house.gov/news/press-releases/ranking-member-connolly-urges-trump-administration-lift-costly-illegal-pause).
No SAVE result is not a refusal CaseCheck tracks a verification case connected to an agency application; it is not a general lookup for whether your new EAD exists. SSA submits its own SAVE request during an SSN application, so an absent CaseCheck result is not a reason to postpone your SSA visit. If verification needs more work, SSA has a process for it. [USCIS CaseCheck](https://www.uscis.gov/save/benefit-and-license-applicants/save-casecheck); [SSA verification procedure](https://secure.ssa.gov/poms.nsf/lnx/0110213095).
Do not request a second numberIf you requested an SSN on Form I-765, tell SSA before it starts a new application. SSA instructs staff to search for an already assigned number and a pending application, complete a matching pending case, and start a new application only if none is found. [SSA POMS RM 10205.700](https://secure.ssa.gov/poms.nsf/lnx/0110205700).
An SSN is not your work permitUSCIS says an employee who meets the other Form I-9 requirements may work while awaiting an SSN. An employer enrolled in E-Verify will need the number for that process; tell the employer you are awaiting it rather than treating the missing card as proof that your is invalid. [USCIS employer handbook](https://www.uscis.gov/i-9-central/form-i-9-resources/handbook-for-employers-m-274/30-completing-section-1-employee-information-and-attestation).

Next steps

These steps establish whether SSA is already processing your number and, if not, complete the right card request.

Now

Start at SSA’s number-card page

Go to https://www.ssa.gov/number-card and answer the questions to start the appropriate original- or replacement-card process. Note whether you previously had an SSN and whether your I-765 requested one; uncertainty about the I-765 answer does not prevent an SSA record search. Beginning online is not necessarily the completed application. [SSA card instructions](https://www.ssa.gov/pubs/EN-05-10002.pdf); [SSA EBE procedure](https://secure.ssa.gov/poms.nsf/lnx/0110205700).

Requirements

Your EAD
Your submitted I-765, if available

Within 45 days if you start online

Arrange and attend an SSA office visit

Use the appointment option offered by the online process. If you cannot start online or cannot self-schedule, call SSA at 1-800-772-1213 for an appointment at a Social Security office or Card Center. Bring original documents or custodian-certified copies; SSA generally asks for a birth certificate and specifies the foreign passport and current immigration document for noncitizens. Complete an online-started application at the office within 45 calendar days. The card application is free. [SSA card instructions](https://www.ssa.gov/pubs/EN-05-10002.pdf); [Form SS-5 instructions](https://www.ssa.gov/forms/ss-5.pdf).

Requirements

Original, unexpired EAD (Form I-766)
Foreign passport
Birth certificate, if available, as general evidence of age
Any SSN previously issued to you, if known

At the visit

Ask SSA to search before opening a new application

Say that you received a C09 EAD and may already have requested an SSN through Form I-765. Ask whether a number has been assigned or a matching application is pending. SSA’s procedure is to work on a matching pending application; if none exists and you have never had a number, staff can start a new original-card application with your evidence. If a number was assigned, ask whether its card is in transit or a replacement is appropriate. [SSA POMS RM 10205.700](https://secure.ssa.gov/poms.nsf/lnx/0110205700).

Requirements

Your EAD’s alien registration number
The mailing address you used on Form I-765, if you requested an SSN there

After the visit

Follow up on the card or verification

If you elected an SSN on I-765 and no card arrives 14 days after you received the EAD, SSA’s EBE guidance says you can contact it; arranging the visit need not wait for that date. SSA initiates SAVE verification in its application process, so ask SSA about any verification hold rather than waiting for a CaseCheck result to appear first. SSA’s usual estimate is 7–10 business days for a card after a completed application, but outstanding verification may delay it. [SSA EBE guidance](https://www.ssa.gov/ssnvisa/ebe.html); [SSA SAVE procedure](https://secure.ssa.gov/poms.nsf/lnx/0110213095); [SSA card instructions](https://www.ssa.gov/pubs/EN-05-10002.pdf).
