If yours is a Canadian-market CR-V, American Honda’s warranty is conditional—not automatic—and you should register it in Florida before waiting for your driver license because the deadlines are 10 days versus 30 days.
“I recently got a TN visa and am moving to Florida. I am importing my 2026 Honda CRV and getting a 30-day compliance letter. Will Honda USA honor my factory warranty? Also, what are the next steps after importing? Should I get my Florida driver's license before registering the car, or register it first, especially since I don't have a permanent address yet?”
Summary
You do not need to wait for a permanent lease or a Florida driver license before dealing with the car. The manageable sequence is federal import, Florida insurance, title/registration using another accepted identity document, and then the Florida license with current-address proof.
Your permanent-import and warranty route depends on the CR-V’s original market, certification labels and the exact manufacturer letter.
For a personal-use, non-salvage Canadian-certified CR-V, use only if American Honda’s VIN-specific letter contains the conformity findings NHTSA requires. EPA Form 3520-1 separately uses code B if the unmodified vehicle bears a U.S. EPA label, or code EE when the Canadian vehicle is identical in all material respects to a U.S.-certified version and has the required proof (NHTSA Canadian Vehicle Importation Guidelines; EPA Form 3520-1). American Honda says it will provide warranty coverage for the applicable period if the Canadian transfer requirements apply and the required packet is submitted (Honda Canada Vehicle Movement FAQ).
If American Honda refuses the letter or it identifies a disqualifying noncompliance, permanent Box 2B import does not work. The fallback is HS-7 Box 3 through a or a contract with one; Florida then requires the bond letter and RI contract, when applicable (NHTSA Canadian Vehicle Importation Guidelines; FLHSMV TL-10).
This is not a permanent-import shortcut. A qualifying nonresident may bring a foreign-registered vehicle for personal use, but it cannot be sold and must be exported within one year (NHTSA Temporary Importations).
Do not rely on the Canadian Box 2B and warranty-transfer instructions. American Honda’s standard 2026 warranty booklet covers vehicles distributed by American Honda and sold or leased by an authorized U.S.-territory dealer; a separate official U.S.-coverage rule for a Mexican-market CR-V was not established by the fetched sources (2026 Honda Warranty Booklet).
Your TN classification does not replace the vehicle-specific safety, emissions, ownership and Florida-registration documents.

Watch out for
Next steps
Follow these steps in order so that the federal import documents unlock Florida registration, which then helps complete Honda’s warranty file.
Before moving, if still possible
Open the Honda letter and warranty cases
Call American Honda Automobile Customer Relations at 1-800-999-1009 for the VIN-specific and case-specific warranty-transfer instructions. Request the separate recall-clearance letter from Honda Canada at 1-888-946-6329. Honda’s page says to start before moving but also lists a current U.S. registration, so obtain American Honda’s exact fax/mail destination and sequence for your case rather than treating the warranty as automatic (Honda Canada Vehicle Movement FAQ).
Requirements
At the border or port
Import the CR-V permanently through CBP
File EPA Form 3520-1 and DOT Form HS-7 with U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Use only if the letter satisfies NHTSA’s Canadian-vehicle rule; if it does not, use the Box 3 route. Select EPA code B only for an unmodified vehicle bearing a U.S. EPA label, or code EE with the required Canadian/identical-vehicle proof. Keep the completed declarations and obtain showing the VIN (CBP; NHTSA; EPA Form 3520-1).
Requirements
Before Florida registration
Buy Florida automobile insurance
Obtain Florida coverage from an insurer licensed in Florida. The policy must be active when you register and maintained throughout the registration period; the statutory minimums are $10,000 in each category (FLHSMV Insurance Requirements).
Requirements
Within 10 days after establishing Florida residency
Title and register the imported CR-V
Apply in person at a Florida motor-vehicle service center, county tax collector or license-plate agency. A Florida license is not a prerequisite: FLHSMV accepts a valid Canadian license or a qualifying unexpired passport; a foreign passport must carry the federal lawful-presence evidence described in TL-01. HSMV 82040 requires both a residential street address and mailing address, so use where you actually live now. The first-registration fee is $225 if you have no transferable Florida plate; the published base title fee is $77.25 for original-new or $85.25 for original-used, before plate/service charges. Also expect 6% plus county surtax on the greater of the lien balance or fair market value at entry, with no credit for foreign tax (FLHSMV TL-01, TL-08 and TL-10). If a lienholder holds the title, request its transfer; if it refuses, obtain that refusal on letterhead for FLHSMV’s registration procedure.
Requirements
As soon as Florida registration is issued
Submit the completed Honda warranty packet
Use the fax or mailing destination American Honda assigns to your case. Honda Canada says American Honda will provide coverage for the applicable warranty period when the cross-border policy applies, but its published page requires case-specific confirmation at 1-800-999-1009 (Honda Canada Vehicle Movement FAQ).
Requirements
Within 30 days after starting Florida employment
Obtain the Florida Class E driver license
Apply in person at an office providing driver-license services. A permanent home is not required, but Florida requires proof of your current residential address. If documents are not in your name, use HSMV 71120 : your host provides one listed household document and one listed supporting document, and appears with you or signs before a notary. The original Class E fee is $48; a tax-collector office may add a $6.25 service fee. FLHSMV administers a vision test and says written and road tests may be waived; if required, their published fees are $10 and $20 respectively (FLHSMV Non-Immigrant Requirements; HSMV 71120; FLHSMV Fees).

Honda Canada Vehicle Movement FAQ
Honda’s Canadian owner policy makes U.S. coverage conditional on its cross-border process and document packet.
Vehicle Movement — Moving to the United States
However, American Honda will provide warranty coverage for the applicable warranty period if you fax or mail the following documents before you move to the United States: A copy of a current Canadian driver's license to show proof of Canadian residency A copy of the Canadian Bill of Sale, which must have the VIN, selling dealer name, and engine number A copy of the Canadian permanent vehicle registration. Temporary registration is not acceptable. A copy of the current vehicle registration in the United States.
2026 Honda Warranty Booklet
The ordinary American Honda warranty applies only to vehicles distributed by American Honda and sold or leased through an authorized dealer in the listed U.S. territories.
Your Warranties in Detail
To be covered, the vehicle must be distributed by American Honda through the Honda Automobile Division and sold or leased by an authorized Honda automobile dealer in the United States, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, or the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.
NHTSA Vehicle Importation Guidelines — Canada
NHTSA’s Canadian-vehicle guide controls whether the vehicle can enter as conforming or must use a Registered Importer.
Box 2B and Box 3
If the manufacturer furnishes a letter of this kind, or refuses to furnish a letter at all, the vehicle could only be imported into the United States on a permanent basis under Box 3 on the HS-7 Declaration form, as detailed below. A Canadian-certified vehicle less than 25 years old can be imported on a permanent basis under Box 3 on the HS-7 Declaration form, provided: • The vehicle is not a salvage motor vehicle or a reconstructed motor vehicle. • The vehicle is imported by a registered importer (RI) or by a person who has a contract with an RI to modify the vehicle so that it complies with all applicable FMVSS following importation.
EPA Form 3520-1
EPA’s form supplies the separate emissions declaration and proof rules for U.S.-certified and qualifying Canadian vehicles.
Declaration codes B and EE
g code B - U.S. certified - unmodified vehicle bearing a U.S. EPA emission control label in engine compartment (or on motorcycle frame) in English. g code EE - identical in all material respects to a U.S. certified version - either 1) Canadian vehicle (proof required e.g. Canadian emission control label, registration or title, or letter from the U.S. or Canadian manufacturer representative on letterhead verifying manufacture for sale in Canada) or 2) vehicle from any country with letter attached to this form from the manufacturer’s U.S. representative on letterhead (not a dealer or mechanic) stating that the vehicle is identical to a U.S. EPA certified version with respect to emissions.
CBP Importing a Motor Vehicle
CBP requires both the EPA emissions declaration and DOT safety declaration when the vehicle enters.
You will also be required to complete EPA form 3520-1 and DOT form HS-7, declaring the emissions and safety provisions under which the vehicle is being imported.
FLHSMV New Resident
Florida’s official newcomer page sets an earlier vehicle-registration deadline than driver-license deadline.
Driver’s License and Title/Registration
As a new Florida resident, you must obtain a valid Florida driver license within 30 days of establishing residency to drive on Florida roads. In addition, you must obtain insurance from a Florida insurance agent that is licensed to sell insurance in Florida in order to title and register your vehicle(s), vessel(s), and mobile home(s) within 10 days of establishing residency.
FLHSMV TL-10
FLHSMV lists the foreign title, VIN verification, customs entry and HS-7 evidence needed for a Florida title.
Out-of-Country Imported Vehicles
Out-of-Country Imported Vehicles need to meet the following requirements: Out-of-Country title establishing proof of ownership. Motor Vehicle Identification Number Verification completed by one of the officials listed on form HSMV 82040 MV or HSMV 82042. Form 7501, U.S. Customs and Border Protection Entry Summary which must include the VIN of the motor vehicle being titled. Form HS-7 Declaration Importation of Motor Vehicles and Motor Vehicle Equipment Subject to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety, Bumper and Theft Prevention Standards which must include the VIN of the motor vehicle being titled. If the Form HS-7 is submitted with 2B selected, a copy of the manufacturer’s confirmation letter is required.
FLHSMV TL-01
A Florida driver license is not required before titling because FLHSMV accepts another listed identity document.
Acceptable Proof of Identification
The following is considered acceptable proof of identification: 1. A valid driver license or identification card issued by Florida or another state, (This includes any U.S. territory such as American Samoa, Guam, Marianas, Puerto Rico, and US Virgin Islands) or Canada. 2. A valid passport or passport card, which does not have to be issued by the United States.
HSMV 71120 — Certification of Address
The address affidavit lets someone living with a host prove a Florida residential address without having two documents in their own name.
Two residential address documents from the approved documents list are required. If the applicant cannot provide two approved Florida residential address documents in their name, this affidavit must be used along with the documents provided by the individual whose name is on the proof of Florida residential address documents.
FLHSMV Insurance Requirements
Florida insurance must be active at registration and maintained while the Florida registration remains current.
Florida’s No-Fault Law requires motor vehicles registered in Florida be insured with at least $10,000 in personal injury protection (PIP) and $10,000 property damage liability (PDL) coverage throughout the motor vehicle registration period.
FLHSMV TL-08
Florida generally taxes an ordinary civilian’s foreign-purchased vehicle on entry without recognizing foreign sales tax.
Foreign-country vehicles; Revision 07/26
If a motor vehicle, mobile home, or vessel was purchased in a foreign country, six (6) percent Florida sales or use tax and local discretionary sales surtax is required to be paid before a certificate of title and registration can be issued by the Department. The amount upon which the tax is applied is the greater of the amount of the outstanding lien on the motor vehicle, mobile home or vessel or the fair market value of the motor vehicle, mobile home or, vessel on date of entry. No credit is allowed for any sales or use tax paid to a foreign country.
FLHSMV Fees
FLHSMV publishes the principal title and first-registration fees, before tax and other plate or service charges.
Motor Vehicle Title and Registration Fees
Initial Registration Fee $225.00. Original New $77.25 Original Used $85.25 Transfer/Duplicate $75.25 Lien Only (No transfer of ownership) $74.25
NHTSA Temporary Importations
The temporary nonresident exception requires export and does not create permanent import eligibility.
Nonresident of the United States
The vehicle cannot be sold while in the United States and must be exported within one year from the date of entry.
