Summary
This is manageable: the carriers already have Canada-to-U.S. workflows, and ordinary furniture you have used for at least a year usually fits the duty-free household-effects rule. The hard part is sequencing your own U.S. entry before shipment and submitting a precise inventory—not finding a way to transport the furniture.
You have two strong self-pack choices, plus a third container option and a full-service option if you do not want to handle the physical work yourself.

Best starting quote for roughly one to one-and-a-half rooms or when storage flexibility matters. Each box is 257 cubic feet and up to 2,000 lb; the online quote breaks out shipping, transit, delivery, pickup and storage, while labor, supplies and additional coverage are optional. Most U-Box shipments are published at 7–14 business days, and online booking supplies a guaranteed arrival date with a stated $50-per-late-day refund up to the shipping cost. For Canada-to-U.S. customs, enter the U.S. first and submit the U-Haul inventory and identity/residency documents.

Best comparison quote if speed or a larger load matters. U-Pack charges by the ReloCubes actually used or by in a trailer; its quote includes equipment, delivery, transportation, fuel and standard liability coverage, with no tax, toll or deposit charge, plus its published $62.02 Canada customs-administration fee. You receive up to three business days to load and three to unload. The general average is 4–6 business days, but transit is estimated unless U-Pack Guaranteed is added. With complete paperwork, U-Pack says it transports the equipment across the border and clears it through U.S. Customs.
PODS cross-borderstorage-first
Use this as a third container quote if you want a 16-foot container or longer loading/storage flexibility. PODS requires all customs PDFs before shipment, requires you to be in the U.S. before departure and through arrival, and says customs—not PODS—assesses duties and taxes. Its cross-border transit is not guaranteed, and charges switch to U.S. dollars at the border.

Use a full-service cross-border mover such as Atlas Canada if you want packing, loading and a move coordinator rather than a self-pack container. Atlas officially offers cross-border and international moving through more than 100 Canadian agents, including Ontario; its public page does not publish a Toronto-to-Bay-Area price or transit time, so compare its custom total against the three container quotes.

Case 1 — furniture used at least one yearYour ordinary may enter free of U.S. duty and tax if you or your family actually used them abroad for at least one year and they are for your household—not for someone else or for sale. You must be able to prove that use, and is required for the free-entry claim under 19 CFR 148.52.
Case 2 — furniture used less than one yearList newer items separately with their approximate used value and mark them as used abroad for less than one year on Form 3299. They do not meet the one-year household-effects exemption, so CBP may assess duty or tax; do not fold them into the duty-free group.
Enter the U.S. before the shipmentFor Canada-to-U.S. U-Box moves, the person named primary on the customs forms must already be in the United States before shipping begins. PODS likewise says to enter before the container ships and remain until it arrives, so do not schedule either container to leave Toronto before your own entry.

Case 2: list newer furniture separately on Form 3299 because it does not meet that exemption. The primary U-Box customs customer must be physically in the United States before shipping begins, and PODS requires you to enter before shipment and remain until arrival. PODS requires each customs document as a separate PDF before its logistics team will release the container.

I used a ubox to move from CA to IL. About $2300 from start to finish. It carries more than you'd think. I packed 2 disassembled bed frames, a queen mattress, mini fridge, desk, a bench, and about 40 boxes.
