Your best general first application is Chase Freedom Unlimited through Nova; use Amex Global Card Transfer only if you already have an eligible Canadian Amex, or RBC Black if you need a route with no U.S. address.

I'm moving from Canada to San Francisco soon for a tech job and have no US credit history, though I have a solid Canadian one. What is the best first US credit card to build my US credit file? Should I use Nova Credit to apply for an Amex or Chase Freedom card, or is it worth opening an RBC or CIBC account for their cross-border offers?

Summary

Your good Canadian history is useful: Chase and RBC both publish routes that can consider it even though your U.S. file is new. You only need one well-managed U.S. card to begin; FICO’s normal minimum account-age condition is six months.

The best route depends on whether you already have an eligible Canadian Amex and whether you need to apply without a U.S. address.

Chase Freedom Unlimited through Novabest overall

This is the best general fit. Chase’s live page lets you use Canadian credit history and currently supports Freedom Unlimited and Freedom Flex; select the international-credit-history box in the Chase application and follow any additional instructions. Freedom Unlimited has no annual fee, making it a practical long-term first account.

Amex Global Card Transferexisting Amex

Use this instead if your Canadian card was issued by American Express, you are the primary cardholder, and it has been held at least three months and is open and in good standing. requires a U.S. home address and phone, U.S. bank details, passport and employment details, plus an SSN or ITIN; the official personal-card number is 877-621-2639.

RBC Visa Signature Blackno US address

This is the strongest pre-move or backup route because RBC says no U.S. score or address is required, it considers Canadian history, and the new U.S. card can help build U.S. credit. The annual fee is $0; you must be 18 or older, live in Canada or the U.S., and have a SIN or SSN, government ID, and a 16-digit RBC client-card number.

Chase Freedom Risefallback

Use this fallback if the Nova route does not work after arrival. Chase says Freedom Rise can establish credit, has a $0 annual fee, and a $250 Chase checking or savings balance increases approval chances; Chase may request a U.S.-issued driver’s license and Social Security card.

CIBC cross-border productsnot for US file

Do not open CIBC solely for this goal. Its U.S. account provides a debit card, while CIBC says activity on the listed U.S.-dollar Aventura credit card is factored into your credit score in Canada—not presented as a U.S.-file-building product.

Choose one primary application first; approval and the assigned limit remain issuer decisions.

Watch out for

Amex–Nova information changedDo not follow old Amex/Nova tutorials. A dated explainer says that partnership ended in 2025, and the current Amex route fetched here is for an eligible existing Amex cardholder—not a new Nova application.
Canadian history is not six months of U.S. historyChase and RBC can use your Canadian record when considering the application, but your new still has to age. FICO generally requires at least one account open for six months and at least one account reported within the last six months.
The CIBC card is a look-alikeCIBC’s cross-border page lists a CIBC Bank USA debit card and a CIBC U.S.-dollar Aventura credit card, but CIBC says that card’s activity affects your credit score in Canada. Do not rely on it as your first U.S.-file card.
Do not apply everywhere at oncePick one primary route and one backup. The CFPB says, “Only apply for credit that you need,” so avoid simultaneous Chase, Amex, and RBC applications.
Carrying a balance does not build fasterThe CFPB says to pay on time every time and pay balances in full each month; paying in full can build better credit than carrying a balance and avoids finance charges.

Next steps

These steps give you the highest-confidence path from Canadian history to one clean U.S. credit account.

Before applying

Choose one primary route

Use Chase Nova as the default; use Amex Global Card Transfer only if you meet its existing-cardholder rule; use RBC Black if no U.S. address is the deciding issue. Do not submit all three applications.

Requirements

Decide whether you already hold a Canadian Amex issued by American Express
Decide whether you need to apply without a U.S. address

Default route

Apply for Chase Freedom Unlimited through Nova

Open https://www.chase.com/personal/credit-cards/novacredit, choose Freedom Unlimited, and check the box saying you have international credit history for Chase to consider. After the initial application, follow any additional instructions Chase sends for submitting that history. The annual fee is $0.

Requirements

Canadian credit history
Information requested in the Chase application

Existing Amex branch

Use Global Card Transfer if you qualify

Apply from https://www.americanexpress.com/en-us/company/about-us/moving-abroad/ or call 877-621-2639, Monday through Sunday, 8:00–23:00 EST. Amex says processing takes 7–10 working days and permits one U.S. card through this process at that time; the fee depends on the card selected.

Requirements

Amex-issued Canadian card held at least 3 months
Primary cardholder status and an open, good-standing account
U.S. home address and home phone
U.S. bank details
Passport and employment details
SSN or ITIN

If you lack a U.S. address

Use RBC Black as the no-address backup

Apply at https://www.rbcbank.com/cross-border/us-credit-cards/visa-signature-black-card.html. RBC states that no U.S. score or address is required, it can consider Canadian history, the card can help build U.S. credit, and the annual fee is $0.

Requirements

Age 18 or older
Residence in Canada or the U.S.
SIN or SSN
Government ID
16-digit RBC client-card number

Fallback after arrival

Use Freedom Rise only if the imported-history routes fail

Apply at https://creditcards.chase.com/cash-back-credit-cards/freedom/rise. Deposit at least $250 in Chase checking or savings to improve—but not guarantee—approval chances. The card has a $0 annual fee and Chase says it can establish credit.

Requirements

A Chase checking or savings account if using the $250 relationship boost
Possible U.S.-issued driver’s license and Social Security card for verification

Immediately after approval

Automate full, on-time payments

Set autopay for the full statement balance by every due date and keep use well below the limit; the CFPB cites no more than 30% as expert guidance. Do not carry interest-bearing debt to build credit. Keep the account active and reported for at least six months to meet FICO’s normal minimum account-age condition.

Requirements

Approved U.S. credit card
U.S. bank account for autopay

5. Use credit cards carefully

You can build credit by using your credit card and paying on time, every time. Pay off your balances in full each month to avoid paying finance charges. Paying off your balance each month can also build better credit than carrying a balance, because it helps keep you from getting too close to your credit limit.
