I'm a physician on a J1 visa starting my residency. I applied for an SSN, but it needed secondary verification. The SAVE system shows my case was 'returned to agency', but the SSA office says their system still shows my case is 'open with DHS'. They corrected an error and resent it to SAVE, it was returned to the agency again, but the SSA system still says it's open with DHS even though they can see it's resolved on SAVE. How can I resolve this issue and get my SSN?
You should return to SSA now—not keep waiting for DHS—and ask the field office to pull the latest returned SAVE response into your pending SSNAP application.
A returned SAVE response is not proof that you are ineligible. SSA’s published workflow specifically says an additional‑verification response does not automatically move into SSNAP, so the field office has a defined manual step for this exact kind of gap.
