Answered October 2026

For the easiest start, choose Ally for your salary and savings; choose Peak for savings instead if you want the higher advertised APY and qualify.

“I'm a new immigrant in the US. What is the best bank to open a savings account with the highest APY and compounding interest without strict terms and conditions, and where should I open an account for direct deposit salary transfers?”

Summary

You can start with Ally without a monthly maintenance fee or minimum balance, then separate your salary and savings later if the higher yield is worth managing another account. Being a noncitizen does not prevent your deposits from receiving FDIC protection.

Your choice is between the simplest one-bank setup, a higher-yield two-bank setup, and a branch route if you do not yet have an SSN.

Simplest: Ally for salary and savingsLeast hassle

Our low-hassle pick is Ally Spending for your salary and Ally Savings for money you want to set aside. Savings advertises 3.10% , with daily compounding, no monthly maintenance fee and no minimum balance. Spending also has no monthly maintenance fee or minimum balance. Ally’s opening FAQ requires you to be at least 18, a U.S. resident with a U.S. street address, and allows a Social Security number or Tax Identification Number. ([Ally eligibility](https://www.ally.com/help/bank/opening-account/), [Savings](https://www.ally.com/bank/online-savings-account/), [Spending](https://www.ally.com/bank/interest-checking-account/).)

Higher savings yield: Peak plus AllyHigher yield

If you have an SSN and Peak accepts your application, consider Peak Envision High-Yield Savings while keeping Ally Spending for your salary. Peak advertises 4.27% APY for new accounts with balances below $500,000, a $100 opening deposit, no ongoing minimum balance and no monthly maintenance fee. Its published rate falls to 3.40% at balances of $500,000 or more. This is the higher savings rate in our two-bank shortlist, but newcomer eligibility is less clearly documented than Ally’s. ([Peak savings disclosure](https://www.peak.bank/peak-bank/savings), [Peak FAQ](https://www.peak.bank/peak-bank/faq).)

No SSN yet: Bank of America branchBranch alternative

Bank of America explicitly says an SSN is not required, although it requires two unexpired IDs, address information and a tax identification number where applicable; its guidance includes foreign tax numbers. For salary, its regular Advantage SafeBalance Banking account—not SafeBalance for Family Banking—is a branch alternative. It requires $25 to open and charges $4.95 monthly unless you qualify for a waiver: an owner under 25, a minimum daily balance of $500, or qualifying BofA Rewards Preferred Plus status or higher. Salary deposits alone are not a listed fee waiver. This is an access option, not our high-yield savings pick. ([Newcomer requirements](https://info.bankofamerica.com/en/international/professional-bank-account.html), [SafeBalance terms](https://www.bankofamerica.com/salesservices/deposits/resources/safebalance-clarity-statement?request_locale=en_US).)

Ally’s quoted savings rate is dated October 14, 2026; Peak’s is dated October 1, 2026, and neither rate is fixed.

Watch out for

APY already includes compoundingCompare the advertised , rather than choosing an account just because it compounds daily. APY already accounts for the frequency of compounding; it is not an extra return added on top of the advertised percentage. Both Ally’s and Peak’s savings rates can change after opening. (12 CFR 1030, Appendix A; Ally Savings; Peak savings disclosure.)
Peak has opening-transfer restrictionsPeak’s $100 opening deposit is subject to a five-business-day hold. Its FAQ also lists a $5,000 maximum when funding by ACH, and says its external-transfer feature becomes available five business days after the initial funding deposit posts. Keep money needed for immediate bills in your salary account. (Peak savings disclosure and FAQ.)
Use checking for everyday paymentsAlly limits certain savings withdrawals and transfers to 10 per statement cycle. It does not charge an excess-transaction fee, but says it will close the account if you exceed the limit more than occasionally. That is why we recommend Spending for salary and bills, with Savings kept separate. (Ally Savings.)
Insurance is not per accountFDIC protection is generally $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category—not $250,000 for every account you open. Your individually owned checking and savings balances at the same bank are added together. You do not have to be a U.S. citizen or resident to have FDIC-insured deposits. (FDIC, Your Insured Deposits, pages 2 and 4.)

Next steps

Open the account you can qualify for first, connect your salary, and then put your savings plan in place.

Before applying

Prepare the identification for your route

Ally’s published eligibility requirements are at https://www.ally.com/help/bank/opening-account/. For the Bank of America branch route, a foreign passport can be your primary ID; a foreign photo driver’s license or qualifying Visa/Mastercard debit or credit card can be secondary ID. Its resident-applicant route requires a physical U.S. address; its nonresident-applicant route requires a physical foreign address and U.S. mailing address. These are the bank’s published alternatives, not a requirement to have a green card. (Bank of America newcomer requirements.)

Requirements

For Ally: age 18 or older, U.S. residence and a U.S. street address
For Ally: Social Security number or Tax Identification Number
For Bank of America: two unexpired IDs and the required address information
For Bank of America: applicable U.S. or foreign tax identification number

Open your salary checking account

For the simplest route, open Ally Spending at https://www.ally.com/bank/interest-checking-account/: the opening minimum and monthly maintenance fee are $0. If you need the no-SSN branch route, arrange a Bank of America financial-center appointment at https://secure.bankofamerica.com/secure-mycommunications/public/appointments/?marketingCode=ENGMAIN_ECBBA and request regular Advantage SafeBalance Banking. Its opening deposit is $25; its monthly fee is $4.95 unless a published waiver applies. Do not choose the Family Banking version for salary direct deposit. (Ally opening FAQ; Ally Spending; Bank of America newcomer requirements and SafeBalance Clarity Statement.)

Requirements

Identification and address information from step 1
$25 opening deposit only if choosing Bank of America SafeBalance

After the checking account opens

Give your employer your direct-deposit instructions

For Ally, use https://www.ally.com/content/dam/pdf/bank/ally-bank.direct-deposit.pdf. Select Checking, enter your Spending account number and routing number 124003116, choose the entire paycheck or a specified amount, then sign and give it to payroll. Ally says setup may take 1–2 pay periods. You can also log in and use its direct-deposit setup at https://www.ally.com/bank/direct-deposit/. If you chose Bank of America, use the Bank of America account and routing details issued for your account—not Ally’s routing number. (Ally Bank Direct Deposit Form.)

Requirements

Your opened checking account number
Your employer’s payroll form or the bank’s direct-deposit form
Your chosen deposit amount and signature

Once your salary-account route is settled

Open the savings account that fits your priorities

For one-bank simplicity, open Ally Savings at https://www.ally.com/bank/online-savings-account/ with no opening minimum. For the higher advertised yield, apply for Peak Envision Savings at https://open.peak.bank/product/envisionHighYieldSavings and fund it with at least $100. Peak’s opening funds have a five-business-day hold, so do not use money needed immediately for rent or other bills. If you used the branch route because your documents are still incomplete, you can establish salary deposits first and add a high-yield account when you meet its requirements. (Ally opening FAQ; Peak savings disclosure.)

Requirements

For Ally: its published opening eligibility
For Peak: successful identity and eligibility review, plus at least $100

After the accounts are ready

Move savings out of your spending money

With Ally Savings, use Recurring Transfers to move a chosen amount on a schedule. With Peak, link your external salary account and use the Transfer tile to enter the transfer details; Peak says this feature is enabled five business days after the initial funding deposit posts. Keep enough in checking for bills rather than repeatedly withdrawing from savings. (Ally Savings; Peak FAQ.)

Requirements

An opened savings account
An amount you can leave available for savings
