Answered October 2026

Yes—proceed with your approved Discover secured card if you can afford its deposit and monthly payments, and you can apply for checking without first building U.S. credit history.

“I just received my ITIN and was rejected for Capital One and Amex Platinum, but approved for a Discover it Secured Cash Card. Should I proceed with the Discover secured card to build credit? Also, do I need to have US credit history to open a US checking account?”

Summary

You can start with one manageable rather than chase more approvals: Discover says it reports card status to all three major credit reporting companies. Your checking-account application is separate, so you do not have to wait until this card has built a credit score.

For the Bank of America checking-account example, your address documents depend on your U.S. tax-residency category.

You are a U.S. tax residentU.S. address

If you are a —called a resident alien in the bank’s requirements—bring your physical U.S. address, two unexpired IDs and your ITIN to the branch appointment. (Bank of America, International professional account-opening requirements.)

You are not a U.S. tax residentTwo addresses

If you are a nonresident alien for tax purposes, the bank requires both a physical foreign address and a U.S. mailing address, plus two unexpired IDs and your ITIN. This published route therefore still requires a U.S. mailing address. (Bank of America, International professional account-opening requirements.)

Both cases require two unexpired IDs and a tax identification number if applicable; Bank of America does not require an SSN.

Watch out for

The deposit is not your monthly paymentYour is held as collateral; budget separately for paying your card’s monthly bill. Paying your balance in full each month avoids finance charges—you do not need to carry debt to build credit. (Discover secured-card FAQ; CFPB, How to rebuild your credit.)
Pause further card applicationsWith an approval already in hand, focus on using that card responsibly rather than immediately trying more issuers. The CFPB warns that applying for or opening many accounts in a short time can lower your credit score. (CFPB, How to rebuild your credit.)
Checking has its own screeningNot needing established U.S. credit does not guarantee checking-account approval. Banks can review a separate report about your banking history; if a report causes a denial, the bank must identify the reporting company, and you are entitled to a free copy. (CFPB, How do I get a copy of my checking account consumer report?)
Bring identification beyond your ITINFor the Bank of America route below, your ITIN does not replace the requirement for two unexpired IDs. Its published rules also require additional proof of lawful U.S. residence if you are a citizen of a country subject to U.S. economic or financial sanctions. (Bank of America, International professional account-opening requirements.)

Next steps

These steps help you use the approval safely while opening checking independently of your credit history.

Before sending the deposit

Confirm your approval uses your correct ITIN

Call Discover’s official credit-card support number, 1-800-347-2683, to confirm that your existing approval was verified using your correct ITIN and to obtain the deposit amount and funding instructions for that approval. This is confirmation of your individual account—not a recommendation to submit another application. The current public pages did not clearly resolve ITIN-only eligibility. (Discover, Contact Us.)

CFPB, How to rebuild your credit

The CFPB recommends low balances, fewer applications and full monthly payments rather than carrying debt.

CFPB, How to rebuild your credit

Keep balances low; avoid excessive applications; pay balances monthly

If you use too much of your credit limit, it may hurt your credit score. Some experts advise using no more than 30 percent of your total credit limit – while others say you should use less than 10 percent. Your credit score may go down if you apply for or open a lot of new accounts in a short time. Pay off your balances in full each month to avoid paying finance charges. Paying off your balance each month can also build better credit than carrying a balance, because it helps keep you from getting too close to your credit limit.

CFPB, Checking account consumer reports

Checking-account reports and adverse-action notices

Checking account reporting companies compile these reports using information about your checking account and transaction history from all the banks and credit unions you’ve held accounts with. It’s possible to have a great credit score and a not-so-good checking account report. You are also entitled to a free copy if you have received an “adverse action” notice. For example, if a bank or credit union turns you down for a checking account based on a report, the bank must give you a notice that includes the name and contact information of the checking account reporting company that provided the report.
