Answered October 2026

Don’t rely on the mail alone: have SSA check your request, and apply directly if it has no existing application it can complete.

“I just received my EAD card for my pending marriage-based I-485. I ticked 'yes' on the forms to have an SSN created for me. Do I need to wait for it to arrive in the mail, or do I have to apply for it myself at the SSA office?”

Summary

Your is an accepted document for an SSN application, so you do not need to wait for your marriage-based green card to apply. The complication is conflicting information about automatic processing—not anything you did wrong.

The deciding fact is whether SSA already has an SSN or application record for you—not simply whether you checked “yes.”

SSA already has your requestAvoid duplication

Have SSA finish the existing application or trace the card if your number has already been issued. Its instructions tell staff to complete a pending application belonging to you rather than automatically start over. (SSA POMS RM 10205.700, C–D.)

SSA has no pending requestApply directly

Apply directly through SSA using your EAD. This covers a missing -linked request, or a request made only on your still-pending I-485. SSA’s instructions tell staff to start an application when no pending application is found. (SSA POMS RM 10205.700, D; SSA Publication 05-10096.)

SSA’s published routine follow-up point is 14 days after EAD receipt; calling now is our precautionary recommendation because the current automatic-processing position could not be established.

Watch out for

The automatic-mailing advice is not settledSSA’s undated webpage still says your SSN card should arrive within 14 days of your EAD. But an April 17, 2025 House Oversight record documents SSA’s March 19, 2025 pause of significant parts of automatic processing. We could not establish from an SSA notice whether I-765 processing has resumed as of October 16, 2026. We therefore cannot promise automatic delivery—or claim a definite current blanket suspension. SSA’s written fallback procedure is to locate an existing request before taking another application. (SSA SSN/work-permit guidance; House Oversight, April 17, 2025; POMS RM 10205.700, C–D.)
An I-485 request has a different triggerIf you selected “yes” only on your I-485, that SSN request is tied to approval of permanent residence—not receipt of your EAD. Your I-485 is still pending, but you can use your EAD to apply directly for an SSN without waiting for your green card. (SSA SSN/work-permit guidance, I-485 section; SSA Publication 05-10096.)
A pending SSN need not stop authorized workIf you have applied for your SSN but have not received the number, E-Verify instructs employers to let you continue working and create the case when your SSN becomes available. This guidance concerns a pending SSN; you still need authorization to work. (E-Verify, pending-SSN employer FAQ.)

Next steps

Use this sequence to avoid a duplicate application while making sure your SSN request is actually moving.

Our recommendation: start now

Call SSA to locate your request

Call 1-800-772-1213, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.–7 p.m. Say: “I received my EAD and requested an SSN on my USCIS forms. Please check whether a number has already been assigned or an application is pending before starting another.” If SSA cannot establish your identity by phone, arrange an appointment at your local SSA office or Social Security Card Center; that does not by itself mean your request is missing. (SSA Publication 05-10096; POMS RM 10205.700, C–D.)

Requirements

Your EAD and its A-Number
Any SSN previously assigned to you
The date your EAD arrived

If an office application or additional evidence is needed

Prepare your documents and Form SS-5 if needed

Download Form SS-5 at https://www.ssa.gov/forms/ss-5.pdf. Applying costs $0. Bring at least two separate documents. If your foreign birth certificate is unavailable and cannot be obtained within 10 business days, SSA can consider your unexpired passport or DHS document as evidence of age. Ordinary photocopies and notarized copies are not accepted. (Form SS-5 instructions; SSA Publication 05-10096.)

Requirements

Unexpired EAD, Form I-766
Unexpired foreign passport
Foreign birth certificate, if you have it or can obtain it within 10 business days
Original documents or copies certified by the issuing agency

At your SSA appointment

Complete the existing request or apply at your appointment

Ask SSA to finish any pending application it locates, or take a new application if none is pending. A first-time SSN applicant age 12 or older must apply in person. Confirm your mailing address: SSA’s booklet says it will mail your card after it has the necessary information and has verified your documents, so do not treat a delivery estimate as a guaranteed date. (POMS RM 10205.700, D; Form SS-5 instructions; SSA Publication 05-10096.)
