Answered October 2026

You can seek a solo furnished Midtown studio within $4,700; I would start in Chelsea for its arts-and-restaurant scene, while treating Hudson Yards as another option—not as a proven safer one.

“I just moved to NYC from London and I am looking for a furnished apartment near central midtown. I want to live alone, have no furniture, and my budget is around $4,700. What are the best platforms or options for finding good furnished apartments, and is Hudson Yards a safe area with a good vibe for a 20-year-old compared to Chelsea?”

Summary

Your age does not prevent you from signing a New York lease, and a furnished studio advertised below your budget gives you a concrete starting point. The honest uncertainty is availability for your dates and the safety of a specific block, not whether Hudson Yards is categorically safe or unsafe.

For living alone without buying furniture, choose between an ordinary furnished studio search and a furnished-apartment provider, then decide whether Chelsea's or Hudson Yards' setting suits you.

Search Chelsea and central Midtown studiosstart here

Start with [StreetEasy](https://streeteasy.com/for-rent/nyc) for area, price and studio searches, and [Zillow's furnished Midtown results](https://www.zillow.com/midtown-manhattan-new-york-ny/furnished-apartments/); confirm “furnished” on each individual listing. One [65 E 54th Street studio](https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/65-E-54th-St-APT-3F-New-York-NY-10022/2101410937_zpid/) was advertised furnished at $4,000 per month when fetched, with possible fees—not a promise of availability for your dates. Chelsea is my *vibe* pick if you want the galleries and restaurants described by [NYC Tourism](https://www.nyctourism.com/new-york/manhattan/chelsea/). A cannot charge you its fee under the [NYC FARE Act FAQ](https://www.nyc.gov/assets/dca/downloads/pdf/about/FAQ-Broker-Fees.pdf).

Use a furnished-apartment providermove-in ready

Compare [Blueground's Chelsea studios](https://www.theblueground.com/furnished-apartments-new-york-usa/s/chelsea/f/bedrooms_0) and [Midtown apartments](https://www.theblueground.com/furnished-apartments-new-york-usa/s/midtown-manhattan), or [New York Habitat's Manhattan furnished rentals](https://www.nyhabitat.com/new-york-apartment/furnished/manhattan). New York Habitat separately labels “Apartment Share,” so select a whole apartment, not a room. These sources establish the furnished options, **not** a confirmed unit within $4,700 for your dates. For an entire residential apartment, plan on at least 30 consecutive days rather than a shorter . [NYC311](https://portal.311.nyc.gov/article/?kanumber=KA-03559)

Choose Hudson Yards for its West Side settingWest Side

Search for a whole furnished studio there if you prefer its shops, public space and access to the [34 St–Hudson Yards stop on the 7 line](https://www.mta.info/maps/subway-line-maps/7-line). The [neighborhood operator](https://www.hudsonyardsnewyork.com/discover/neighborhood) describes dining, galleries and open space; it is not an official safety ranking. The [NYPD](https://www.nyc.gov/site/nypd/bureaus/patrol/precincts/10th-precinct.page) places it in the same precinct as Chelsea, so choose by the actual apartment, route and atmosphere—not an unsupported claim that one is safer.

Book a residential entire-apartment stay under 30 daysnot for you

If you need fewer than 30 days *and* insist on having an ordinary residential apartment entirely to yourself, this is not the workaround: NYC says hosts cannot rent an entire apartment or home to visitors for fewer than 30 days, even if they own or live in the building. [NYC311](https://portal.311.nyc.gov/article/?kanumber=KA-03559)

At 20, you can make a lease contract under New York's age-of-capacity rule; a landlord's acceptance still depends on the particular application. [N.Y. General Obligations Law § 3-101](https://www.nysenate.gov/legislation/laws/GOB/3-101)

Watch out for

A whole apartment for fewer than 30 daysIf you need a temporary place before signing a longer lease, an ordinary residential apartment cannot be rented to you as the sole guest for fewer than 30 days. A rental of 30 consecutive days or more is outside NYC's short-term-rental registration requirement; do not assume a listing described as “one month” necessarily means 30 days. [NYC311](https://portal.311.nyc.gov/article/?kanumber=KA-03559)
A broker fee you did not chooseSince June 11, 2025, a landlord's agent cannot charge you a broker fee or make you hire a broker to get the apartment. You may choose and pay your own broker, but it must actually be your choice. Require the written, itemized fee disclosure before signing. [NYC broker-fee FAQ](https://www.nyc.gov/assets/dca/downloads/pdf/about/FAQ-Broker-Fees.pdf)
Move-in cash beyond monthly rentFor a residential tenancy, a cannot exceed one month's rent; a landlord cannot demand both that deposit and last month's rent. Before a lease, a credit-and-background check is capped at $20, and you can avoid that charge by supplying your own check performed within the previous 30 days. [New York Attorney General](https://ag.ny.gov/publications/residential-tenants-rights-guide)
Paying before seeing the placeA furnished photo is not proof that the apartment or advertiser is genuine. New York's Department of State advises inspecting the premises before paying advance fees or deposits and verifying an agent's license through [eAccessNY](https://appext20.dos.ny.gov/nydos/nydoslogin.do?header=true); treat requests for hard-to-trace payment as a warning. [State rental-scam alert](https://dos.ny.gov/news/consumer-alert-new-york-department-states-division-consumer-protection-reminds-new-yorkers-3)
Chelsea nightlife at age 20Chelsea's nightlife may sound appealing, but New York prohibits selling alcoholic beverages to someone under 21. That does not stop you enjoying its galleries, restaurants or other activities; it does change what a bar-focused evening can offer you. [NY Alcoholic Beverage Control Law § 65](https://www.nysenate.gov/legislation/laws/ABC/65)
A precinct is not a safety guaranteeBoth Chelsea and Hudson Yards are served by the NYPD's 10th Precinct. Its figures cannot, by themselves, tell you which particular building or walk home is safer; the precinct's September 2026 report also says its figures are preliminary. [NYPD precinct](https://www.nyc.gov/site/nypd/bureaus/patrol/precincts/10th-precinct.page); [NYPD report](https://www.nyc.gov/assets/nypd/downloads/pdf/crime_statistics/cs-en-us-010pct.pdf)

Next steps

Use these steps to narrow the search to a real, furnished apartment you alone can rent, then avoid avoidable fees and scams.

Start with the apartment, not the neighborhood label

Make a whole-apartment shortlist

Search [StreetEasy](https://streeteasy.com/for-rent/nyc) by area, price and studio/one-bedroom, then confirm furnishing on each listing; use [Zillow's furnished Midtown page](https://www.zillow.com/midtown-manhattan-new-york-ny/furnished-apartments/) as another starting point. A [65 E 54th St studio](https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/65-E-54th-St-APT-3F-New-York-NY-10022/2101410937_zpid/) was advertised at $4,000/month and marked furnished when fetched. Compare [Blueground Chelsea studios](https://www.theblueground.com/furnished-apartments-new-york-usa/s/chelsea/f/bedrooms_0), [Blueground Midtown](https://www.theblueground.com/furnished-apartments-new-york-usa/s/midtown-manhattan), and [New York Habitat furnished rentals](https://www.nyhabitat.com/new-york-apartment/furnished/manhattan); exclude entries labeled apartment share. StreetEasy says its search prices exclude fees.

Requirements

Monthly rent ceiling: $4,700
A studio or one-bedroom for yourself
Your intended move-in date and length of stay

Before applying

Compare the actual locations

Chelsea's [NYC Tourism guide](https://www.nyctourism.com/new-york/manhattan/chelsea/) describes galleries, eateries and performing arts; [Hudson Yards](https://www.hudsonyardsnewyork.com/discover/neighborhood) describes dining and open space, and the [MTA 7-line map](https://www.mta.info/maps/subway-line-maps/7-line) places a stop at 34 St–Hudson Yards. For safety context, use the [NYPD 10th Precinct page](https://www.nyc.gov/site/nypd/bureaus/patrol/precincts/10th-precinct.page) and its [precinct report](https://www.nyc.gov/assets/nypd/downloads/pdf/crime_statistics/cs-en-us-010pct.pdf); both neighborhoods share the precinct, so its totals cannot settle which address feels safer. Walk a shortlisted route at the time you expect to use it if you can.

Requirements

Addresses of shortlisted apartments

Before a deposit or application payment

Inspect and verify before sending money

Arrange an inspection of the actual unit and its furniture. If an agent is involved, use New York's [eAccessNY license lookup](https://appext20.dos.ny.gov/nydos/nydoslogin.do?header=true) to verify the license; the [state rental-scam alert](https://dos.ny.gov/news/consumer-alert-new-york-department-states-division-consumer-protection-reminds-new-yorkers-3) advises against advance payments before an opportunity to inspect and warns about hard-to-trace payments.

Requirements

The exact apartment address
The advertiser's name and, if an agent, license details

Before signing or paying move-in costs

Get the lease, dates and full charges in writing

Confirm that any residential entire-apartment stay is for **at least 30 consecutive days** if you need to live there alone; NYC prohibits an ordinary entire-apartment visitor rental for fewer than 30 days. Request the landlord's written fee disclosure before signing. Under the [NYC broker-fee FAQ](https://www.nyc.gov/assets/dca/downloads/pdf/about/FAQ-Broker-Fees.pdf), you do not owe the landlord's broker; paying a broker you independently choose is different. For a residential lease, the [Attorney General's guide](https://ag.ny.gov/publications/residential-tenants-rights-guide) caps the security deposit at one month's rent and a pre-lease credit/background check at $20, with a recent self-supplied check as a fee-free alternative.

Requirements

Lease identifying the whole unit and rental dates
Itemized fee disclosure
Written furniture or included-items description

Credit scores don’t transfer which makes renting a bit tricky here, you can either use a guarantor service (your work might pay), or we rent in a walk up and the landlord was ok to just see some savings evidence / uk credit score - I think maybe big buildings are less flexible
