You do not need to wait a set number of days after your EAD arrives to apply at SSA; the 10-day recommendation, if relevant, runs from your U.S. arrival—not from EAD delivery.
“I just got my EAD approved and need to apply for an SSN. How many days after my EAD is delivered should I go to the SSA office to apply so I can avoid secondary SAVE verification delays?”
Summary
There is no special post-delivery countdown you must get right to apply. A later SAVE check is possible even if you wait; bringing the correct documents and following up when appropriate is more useful than guessing a number of days.
The timing depends on whether you already requested an SSN through an earlier immigration application and, if not, when you arrived in the United States.
Once your physical arrives, you can start the SSA application and arrange the office visit; SSA does not prescribe additional days to wait after EAD delivery. Its 10-day recommendation is measured from U.S. arrival. Bring the card to the office. Have your physical in hand, and follow SSA’s recommendation to wait until 10 days **after U.S. arrival** before applying directly with SSA. That may make online document verification easier, but cannot promise a first-pass result. If your filing receipt confirms an SSN request under , SSA says a separate office application is unnecessary and the card should arrive separately within 14 days after your EAD. Contact SSA if it does not arrive then, rather than assuming you must make a new application immediately. An EAD approval alone does not establish that you requested an SSN; the currently accepted 08/21/25 Form I-765 does not include the older SSN-request questions. [USCIS](https://www.uscis.gov/i-765); [Form I-765](https://www.uscis.gov/sites/default/files/document/forms/i-765.pdf)

Watch out for
Next steps
First establish whether an SSN request is already pending, then use the appropriate mail or SSA-office route.
Before starting a second application
Identify any earlier SSN request
Look for confirmation that you requested an SSN on an earlier immigration filing. SSA's policy says an I-765 receipt indicates whether an SSN was requested. If you did request one, SSA says the separate card should arrive within 14 days after your EAD; if it does not, contact SSA at 1-800-772-1213. Do not infer a request merely from approval of the currently accepted 08/21/25 I-765. [SSA policy](https://secure.ssa.gov/poms.nsf/lnx/0110205700); [SSA card guidance](https://www.ssa.gov/ssnvisa/ebe.html); [current USCIS form](https://www.uscis.gov/sites/default/files/document/forms/i-765.pdf)
Requirements
If no SSN was already requested
Wait for the physical EAD, not an extra EAD-based period
Apply directly with SSA after the EAD is delivered. If you arrived in the United States fewer than 10 days ago, SSA recommends waiting until 10 days after **arrival** to make online DHS verification easier; it gives no extra number of days to count from EAD delivery. [SSA, Social Security Numbers for Noncitizens](https://www.ssa.gov/pubs/EN-05-10096.pdf); [SSA office guidance](https://www.ssa.gov/ssnvisa/ebe.html)
Requirements
After the applicable arrival-based recommendation
Start the SSA request and arrange an office visit
Start a first-number request at https://www.ssa.gov/number-card/request-number-first-time and self-schedule the office visit if offered. If you cannot self-schedule, call SSA at 1-800-772-1213 for an appointment; complete the document visit within 45 days of starting online. If you cannot start online, Form SS-5 is at https://www.ssa.gov/forms/ss-5.pdf. The SSN-card application is free. [SSA, noncitizen guidance](https://www.ssa.gov/pubs/EN-05-10096.pdf); [Form SS-5](https://www.ssa.gov/forms/ss-5.pdf)
Requirements
At your appointment
Bring your original documents to SSA
Present your EAD, passport, and available age evidence at the SSA office or Card Center. If your foreign birth certificate is unavailable within 10 business days, SSA says it can consider your unexpired passport or a DHS document as age evidence. Bring originals or issuing-agency-certified copies, not photocopies or notarized copies; SSA then verifies immigration documents with DHS before issuing the number. How long will it take to get a Social Security number?
If you file an application with Social Security, we must verify your documents with DHS before assigning you an SSN.
