Your case forks: pursue a non-SMS escalation on the current Chase application first, and port your existing Red Pocket number only if Chase confirms carrier eligibility is the remaining block.

I applied for a Chase Sapphire Preferred credit card and need to verify my identity with my passport. However, customer service says they can't verify my phone number because I use RedPocket, so they aren't allowed to send me the document upload link. How can I solve this phone verification issue to complete my application?

Summary

This is a bank identity-check obstacle, not a problem with your immigration status or passport. You still have a workable sequence: preserve and escalate the current application first, then move the same phone number only if Chase confirms that doing so will remove the block.

Start with the existing application; change carriers only if Chase’s application team says it has no non-SMS route and confirms that porting will cure this application’s phone block.

Escalate the current applicationfirst step

Call Chase’s official pending-application number, 1-888-338-2586, with your reference number, ZIP code, and SSN available. Ask the representative to keep the existing application open, record that Red Pocket caused the phone-validation failure, and escalate for any authorized non-SMS or manual identity-verification route; Chase says callers may need the reference number and identity information.

Port the same numberbackup

If Chase says carrier eligibility is the only remaining block and identifies an acceptable destination, your existing number rather than changing the number on the application. Red Pocket requires an active line, account number, transfer PIN, port-out blocker turned off, and matching name and address; the FCC says an existing number can be kept when switching providers in the same geographic area.

Rely on a branch alonenot guaranteed

Do not treat a passport visit as a guaranteed fix. Chase’s published ID list concerns opening an account and requires original primary and secondary ID; no fetched Chase source says a branch can override the pending-card phone check.

Federal law allows Chase several verification methods but does not force Chase to offer you a particular one.

Watch out for

A passport is not a guaranteed bypassThe federal rule lets a bank use documents, non-documentary checks, or both; a passport is only one permitted example. It does not give you a right to passport-only verification or require Chase to replace its phone check (31 CFR 1020.220(a)(2)(ii)).
Do not miss Chase’s written deadlineIf Chase treats the application as incomplete, its written must identify what is missing, give a reasonable response period, and warn that failure to respond ends further consideration. Use the date in that notice; the general Chase statement that applicants usually receive a decision or follow-up within 14 days is not your personal deadline (12 CFR 1002.9(c); Chase application-status guidance).
Do not cancel Red Pocket before portingKeep the Red Pocket line active until the finishes. Red Pocket warns that canceling first may cause you to lose the number, and the FCC likewise says not to terminate existing service before starting service with the new provider.
A branch visit is not a documented card-application bypassChase’s published identification PDF tells customers to bring original primary and secondary ID before opening an account, but it does not say branch staff can bypass phone verification for a pending credit-card application. Do not let an unsupported branch visit consume your application deadline.

Next steps

These steps protect the pending application, resolve the carrier issue without losing your number, and preserve your rights if Chase closes or denies the file.

Today, while the application is pending

Call Chase’s pending-application line

Call 1-888-338-2586. Say: “My Sapphire Preferred application is pending. Red Pocket caused your phone verification to fail, so I could not receive the passport-upload link. Please keep this application open, note the carrier failure, and escalate it for any authorized non-SMS or manual identity-verification method. If no alternative exists, please identify the carrier or plan requirement that will work for this application and state my response deadline.” Chase’s official page says this number handles urgent application updates and that callers may need their reference number and identity information.

Requirements

Application reference number, if Chase provided one
ZIP code and Social Security number
Date and summary of the earlier call about Red Pocket
Passport ready for the application-specific upload request

By the date printed in Chase’s notice

Answer any written incompleteness notice

Follow the submission method and deadline written in the . Under 12 CFR 1002.9(c), the notice must specify what is needed, set a reasonable response period, and warn that failure to respond ends further consideration. Keep the notice and submission confirmation.

Requirements

The Chase notice
The requested identity information or document
Proof of submission or delivery

Only if Chase confirms carrier eligibility is the blocker

Port the existing number if Chase confirms this cure

At https://www.redpocket.com/my-lines, select the line, open “Manage Number,” turn the port-out blocker off, choose “Transfer This Number,” and generate the account number and transfer PIN. Give the new carrier those details plus the matching name and address. Do not cancel Red Pocket first; wait for completion, then confirm closure with Red Pocket. After the transfer, call 1-888-338-2586 and request the application-specific passport-upload link again.

Requirements

Active Red Pocket service
Red Pocket account number and transfer PIN
Port-out blocker turned off
Name and address exactly as shown on the Red Pocket account
Replacement carrier or plan Chase has confirmed is verifiable for this application

Promptly if the deadline is approaching or Chase refuses a route

File a CFPB complaint if Chase offers no usable route

Submit at https://www.consumerfinance.gov/complaint/. State that Chase conditioned access to its passport-upload link on phone verification, rejected the Red Pocket line, and did not provide a workable alternative; request a route to complete the existing application before its deadline. Include all key facts and documents in the first complaint because CFPB says a second complaint about the same problem is generally unavailable. CFPB forwards the complaint to the company, and companies generally respond in 15 days.

Requirements

Application reference number
Dates and short summaries of Chase calls
Any incomplete or denial notice
Screenshots or messages showing the failed verification, if available

Within 60 days if the notice offers the request option

Request the specific reason if Chase denies the application

Read the notice. It must either state specific reasons or tell you that you may request them; when Chase uses the request option, Regulation B says you must request the reasons within 60 days of the notice and Chase must provide them within 30 days. Use the contact listed in that notice and keep a copy of the request.

Requirements

Chase’s written denial notice
A copy of any written request you send
